Description

Aladdin Jafar Early Character Development Art by Sue Nichols (Walt Disney, 1992). Featured in this lot is an outstanding early character development art by Disney storyboard artist, character designer, and visual development artist Sue Nichols (1965 - 2020). Nichols graduated from CalArts in 1987 and began her incredible career at Disney in 1991 as a visual development artist on Beauty and the Beast in 1991. She continued to work there for nearly four decades on films like The Lion King, Mulan, and Moana (including a new production stylist role on Hercules made specifically fo her) and won a Winsor McCay Award, one of the highest honors given in the animation industry, after her passing in 2020 for her lifelong dedication and contribution to the medium. The full figure hand-colored figure of Jafar in this lot is proof of her creativity and one of her many contributions to the 1992 film Aladdin as she imagined Jafar in his early gray color palette with Iago at his side. The design includes several details that made it to his final design, including the snake staff and the look of his attire, with unique additions like scarab cloak attachments and red jewelry. The linework for the concept is a studio-print and has been meticulously trimmed to figure and mounted to 12'' x 14.5'' paper. The debris from the shoe Jafar is holding, like the character, is nicely hand-colored. Very Good condition with pinholes and faint edge and handling wear.
From the Disney Legend Inductee Andreas Deja Collection.
