Description

"Statehood for Moosylvania" Pair of Band Wagon Illustrations plus Photo and Letter Group of 4 plus 3 Prints (Jay Ward, 1962). Here are two more extremely rare pieces of Jay Ward Productions art by background/color stylist artist Sam Clayberger (1926 - 2018). In an insanely cool publicity stunt, Jay Ward rented a small island located in Minnesota's Lake of the Woods near the Canadian border, and campaigned the US government for statehood for Bullwinkle's home base, Moosylvania (which was also the title of the fourth Rocky and Bullwinkle story arc). Jay even rigged up a van and traveled to Washington D.C. to state his case to President John F. Kennedy... only he arrived just as the 1963 Cuban Missile Crisis was unfolding, and the van was turned away at gunpoint! Here are two additional concept drawings of the van that Jay and publicist Howard Brandy drove to Washington, only to be so rudely turned away; they are shown on page 89 in the Darrell Van Citters book The Art of Jay Ward. The art is in graphite with color markers and pencils on sheets of 12 field animation paper; approximate image sizes are 8.25" x 4" and 7.5" x 4.75". Also included is a 10" x 8" publicity photo of the decorated van plus an original printed "Statehood for Moosylvania Committee" letter. Photocopies of the Van Citters book's van art page and cover of the book are included. The art is in Very Good condition with minor handling wear. The photo and letter are in Very Good to Fine condition with light handing.
