The Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote Color Model Animation Cel and Background Setups Group of 2 (Walt Disney, c. 1970s-1980s).
In this lot we have an awesome set of two color model cels featuring Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. The cels are hand-painted and paired with hand-painted presentation backgrounds. The characters were created by animation legend Chuck Jones (1912-2002) and writer Michael Maltese for Warner Brothers in 1948. Warner Brothers would make 49 cartoons featuring the two antagonists. Chuck Jones would direct 28 of those shorts. Early model sheets for Wile E. Coyote identified him as Don Coyote, a pun of the name Don Quixote. Both pieces are 12 field cels in mats measuring 18" x 16" with an opening of 12" x 9.5" and 12" x 10". The artwork has normal usage, minor handling and edge wear; otherwise, condition is Very Good.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
