DescriptionSheep in Deep Ralph Wolf Color Model Cel and Production Background (Warner Brothers, 1962). Inspired by Friz Freleng's cartoon The Sheepish Wolf, Chuck Jones (1912 - 2002) created the characters Ralph Wolf and Sam Sheepdog for his 1953 theatrical short Don't Give Up The Sheep. They were such a hit that he made five more Ralph and Sam cartoons between 1953 and 1963. Sheep in Deep was the penultimate Ralph and Sam short and last directed by Chuck Jones. This is an original hand-inked and hand-painted color model cel of Ralph as he removes his Sam Sheepdog disguise at the 5:36 mark. He measures approximately 3.5" x 5.5" on a 12 field cel marked D17/60 BM-1 along the bottom border. It is presented over an original hand-painted production background from the same short which appears at the 0:38 mark. The gouache on board background measures 14" x 10" and is marked SC-3 1563 along the upper border. Layout artist Maurice Noble co-directed this cartoon and the extraordinary backgrounds in it certainly reflect his unmistakable influence. This is an incredibly rare setup of vintage art from one of Jones final Warner Brothers classics. Minor handling and condition is Very Good.
