DescriptionChilly's Hide-A-Way Production Cel Setup with Key Master Vertical Pan Background (Walter Lantz, 1971). In Chilly's penultimate theatrical short, a faces Colonel Pot-Shot and Smedley in their final screen appearance. Directed by Paul Smith, this short featured animation by Tom Byrne, Virgil Ross, Al Coe, and Joe Voght, with backgrounds painted by Nino Carbe (1909 – 1993). This very impressive original animation setup features a great Carbe vertical pan background of an incredibly steep mountain road. It's actually two conjoined boards, with an overall size of 10.5" x 24". On the background are two hand-inked, hand-painted cels; the lower cel features a small image of Chilly and Smedley driving up the road in a jeep. This image measures approximately 1.5" x .75". On top is the gondola lift, with an image size of .75" x 1". The setup is part of a Lantz Studio display board with a clear plastic cover that was at one time seen at Lantz's Universal Studios office. The board measures 20" x 32", and includes a print image of Woody Woodpecker with a caption balloon, handwritten by Walter Lantz (1899 – 1994) that reads "This is a vertical background used in one of my cartoons." A printed Walter Lantz signature logo is in the lower right. The board has tack holes, and the setup has minor handling wear. Very Good condition.
