Carmen's Veranda Background Art Group of 2 (Terrytoons, 1944). This Gandy Goose short effortlessly mixed stage scenes with "real" locations in presenting the opera "Carmen's Veranda." Here are two original hand-painted 12 field 3-peghole production backgrounds from this Mannie Davis-directed short, which was released on 7/28/44. The first is noted as Sc 1 and shows the huge marques sign on top of a building. The main sign area is sold black, and has a scuff mark and two small spots of yellow paint, but is otherwise vibrant and beautiful. This is the opening scene that shows "Opening To-Night" (the :23 mark) and "Carmen's Veranda" (one second later). The second background is noted as Sc 10, and shows the stage with a castle backdrop; it can be found at the 1:14 mark. The slightly darker "stain" seen to the upper left is how the art appears in the short, and is not a flaw. Both pieces are painted in gouache on skimmed boards with Terrytoons stamps on the reverse. Good to Very Good condition with minor handling and edge wear.
