Carl Barks "The Makings of a Fish Story" Scrooge McDuck Preliminary Drawing (Walt Disney/Another Rainbow, 1985). Carl Barks' only underwater painting, known professionally as CB OIL 135, was one of his richest, most detailed and intricate images of all. It was inspired by the classic 1966 story, "Hall of the Mermaid Queen," originally published in Uncle Scrooge #68 (Gold Key, 1967), about Scrooge's attempts with Donald and the boys to salvage his sunken fortune, and encountering a race of merpeople living under the ocean. It made for a magnificent painting. Here is the extremely detailed final transfer preliminary drawing Barks created just prior to the painting, showing two mermaids with human faces (the story's protagonist, Queen Cleopickerel, and her subjects all have a duck-billed face) as Scrooge and Donald, with help from Huey, Dewey, and Louie, prepare to load up the booty from Davy Jones' Locker. In the meantime, a shark and two huge tentacles are about to close in on our heroes. The art is in graphite with red and blue pencil on a large sheet of velum paper, with an overall image size of 20" x 25", and matted to an overall size of 26" x 32". It's signed in the lower right border by Carl Barks (1901-2000). This piece was displayed in the Gottfried Helnwein German Museum tours in the 1990s, in a landmark retrospective exhibition titled "Wer (Who) ist Carl Barks?" A certificate of Authenticity signed by Carl Barks is included. Minor handling wear. Fine condition.
