Carl Barks "Holiday in Duckburg" Scrooge McDuck and Donald Duck Preliminary Drawing (Walt Disney/Another Rainbow, 1989). All the fowlfolk have gathered in the city park for a day of fun in Carl Barks' lovely 1989 painting, "Holiday in Duckburg." The cast of characters is amazing -- Uncle Scrooge is up front (searching for treasure with a metal detector), while Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Gladstone Gander, Grandma Duck, Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Gyro Gearloose enjoy themselves behind him. But wait -- even Flintheart Glomgold, Magica De Spell, and the Beagle Boys are in for the fun! Before Barks painted this happy image, he went through a series of preliminary drawings, each one adding detail until he got every detail right. This is his third preliminary drawing, with special attention to properly placing the characters (most of which he created himself in his 1940s-60s comic book stories). It's in graphite and green pencil on velum paper, with an approximate image area of 20" x 16"; matted for an overall size of 26" x 22.75". It's signed by Carl Barks (1901-2000) in the lower left corner. This piece was displayed in the Gottfried Helnwein German Museum tours in the 1990s, in a landmark retrospective exhibition titled "Wer (Who) ist Carl Barks?" Minor handling wear. Fine condition.
