Carl Barks Gifts For Shacktown Reformatted Donald Duck Pencil Layout (Walt Disney, c. 1975). The front cover to the classic 1952 Dell comic book story "A Christmas for Shacktown" with Donald riding a toy train as nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie shoulder a huge sack of presents, served as inspiration for this layout rough. Carl Barks had been taking commissions on Disney Duck paintings, based on his original cover art, for a few years when he experimented with this "landscape" format preliminary; the final 1975 painting, his CB OIL 115 chose a more familiar "portrait" format. It's hard to deny the power of this oversized piece, which has an image size of 16" x 20", and one can only imagine how a finished painting done this way would have looked. Even a loosely-drawn rough by Mr. Barks is an impressive thing to see. Noted in Carl's hand along the bottom edge is a circled number 21, with "Experimental rough trying to adapt original 'Shacktown' cover composition to a horizontal format." This piece, in graphite and color pencils, has faded and toned a bit from an old framing; it has been signed in ink in the lower left corner, right above a Walt Disney Company copyright stamp. The art is matted to an overall size of 27" x 22.5". Good condition.
