Beauty and the Beast Background Color Key/Concept Art (Walt Disney, 1991). Offered in this lot is a miniature masterpiece from Disney's groundbreaking 1991 animated feature film Beauty and the Beast. This film was Disney's first real implementation of CGI for many of the backgrounds, so there is little production art available to collectors. Presented here is an original color key/concept painting of the Beast's castle and the dark green tone certainly conveys an eerie and unwelcoming appearance. Color keys serve as a way for directors and layout designers to establish a look and feel of the various scenes and settings in a film's early development. They also help in establishing the overall color palette for a scene. Background artists and animators then use these preliminary thumbnail paintings as references for creating the finished environments. This 4.5" x 2.5" watercolor painting of the castle as seen from a distance is exquisitely rendered and profoundly dramatic for its size. It certainly supports the theory that big things come in small packages. The one-of-a-kind gouache painting is framed with a mat opening of 4.5" x 2.5" in a 8.5" x 6.5" frame. Condition is Fine. Frame is sold as-is.
