    Description

Bambi Thumper and Bambi Production Cel and Master Background Courvoisier Setup with Walt Disney Signed Mat (Walt Disney, 1942). Young Prince Bambi finds his first friend, a little gray rabbit named Thumper, in this utterly charming original hand-inked, hand-painted production cel setup. Directed by David Hand, Bambi was Walt Disney's fifth animated feature. The story is based loosely on Felix Salten's 1923 novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods. The film was released on 8/13/1942, and is widely considered one of the finest animated features ever; the American Film Institute lists it as #3 in the Top Ten in animation. This Courvoisier setup has taken cels of Bambi and Thumper from the early sequences in the film, which were meticulously trimmed to image. They were then attached to an actual production background; it can be seen in Sequence 2.1, Scene 46 at the 10:28 mark, as Bambi tries to stand back up after a tumble. A color print of the reverse side with studio stamps and a handwritten OK is included. The Bambi cel is from the scene where he encounters a mole burrowing up from beneath the ground, at the 9:31 mark. The Thumper cel can be found at the 14:08 mark, as Bambi meets another friend, a skunk he calls "Flower." The tall grass foreground is specially painted on cel and added by Disney artists for Courvoisier. The setup is in its original hand-lettered mat, which has a special treat – it has been hand-signed by the man who started it all, Walt Disney (1901 – 1966). The signature is in green crayon, directly under the WDP stamp. Mat opening is 9" x 8", with an approximate overall size of 16.25" x 16". The original Courvoisier label is attached to the back of the mat. Finding such a cute production cel setup of Bambi and Thumper from the 1942 film is a rare treat, but finding one using an actual Master background from the movie is exceptional. The cherry on top is, of course, the authentic Walt Disney signature on the mat – wow! The mat has some handling and edge wear, including a 1.75" tear along the top edge, and some minor moisture damage and warping along the bottom. The cels have had some professional restoration. Very Good condition.
