Bambi Preliminary Deer Anatomy Model Sheet Drawings by Rico LeBron Group of 3 (Walt Disney, 1942). The Disney Studio's dilemma early on with Bambi was that there was not a great deal of experience in animating animals. In the Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston book, Walt Disney's Bambi - The Story and the Film, they write on page 138, "By April there was nearly 20 minutes of footage ready for viewing. Pierce did not want to run it for Walt until he had tested it first with some less crucial critics and he had a chance to correct any confusing sections. He brought in Rico LeBron, at the time one of the leading draftsman of animals in the country. Rico LeBron had been hired by Walt to help the eager young crew of animators learn how to draw four-legged creatures, both small and large. His knowledge was enormous, his taste and judgment impeccable, and his enthusiasm contagious." The studio had books made up on how to sketch animals for animation. Rico went on to make very elaborate and extensive model sheet-type drawings that showcased deer anatomy and movement. His drawings were printed and placed in all style guides for this film. This is a rare lot of THREE of Rico LeBron's original deer anatomy and movement model sheets that the studio published. They showcase (1) Deer slipping on ice; (2) Deer stepping over a log; and (3) Deer falling all over a log. He has drawn deer anatomy sketches showcasing movement of each topic. Each of these topics can be plainly seen in the finished film. His notes for each movement are on the model sheet. These are Rico's model sheet #'s 14, 8, and 16. The art is done is done in graphite on 16 field 5-peghole animation paper. Very important and historical artwork! Minor handling and edge wear. In Very Good condition. From the Cecil Beard Archives.
