    Description

Bambi Concept Painting by Gustaf Tenggren (Walt Disney, 1942). One of the most productive and influential artists working at the Walt Disney Studio was the Swedish-American illustrator, Mr. Gustaf Tenggren (1896 - 1970). His work and influence on such films as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Bambi are highly documented and written about. His high-quality, stylized paintings also influenced the theatrical shorts Little Hiawatha, The Ugly Duckling, and The Old Mill. He worked at Disney from 1936 to 1939, before leaving the studio and going on to illustrating children's books. One of his last Disney projects was doing extremely magnificent paintings of the forest and opening scenes of Bambi. This piece is quite simply a museum quality one-of-a-kind painting of Bambi in the densely detailed forest. This is a gouache painting that is actually shown on page 36 in the lavish art book Bambi by Pierre Lambert as well as in the excellent They Drew As They Pleased - The Hidden Art of Disney's Golden Age (The 1930s) by Didier Ghez on page 173. This is a Master painting, hand-signed "Tenggren" in the bottom right corner. Matted with an opening of 10" x 8" and framed with glass for an overall size of 20" x 17". Frame is sold as-is. Art condition is Very Good.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
