Description
Middle and East Sepik River Hand-Painted Sago Pot and Decorative Roof/Gable Pottery Group of 9 (c. 1970s). In this lot, we present a group of nine stunning pieces of pottery that Disney Legend and one of Disney's Nine Old Men Marc Davis (1913 - 2000) and his wife Disney Legend Alice Estes Davis (1929 - 2022) added to their collection in one of their trips to Papua New Guinea in 1975 and 1978. Davis held the peoples of the Oceania region in high regard, particularly those Papua New Guinea, noting the designs of their artwork as evoking feelings "as close to the soul of a man as one could get." Each of these beautiful pieces of pottery are believed to have been crafted by an indigenous artisan for sale in Aibom Village, the only village with the right clay for this type of pottery. The clay is collected from the base of Aibom Mountain and shaped by women while the additional decorative faces, figures of ancestors, spirits, and animals, and the paint are traditionally added by men. A majority of the pots were created for storing sago, starchy flour pulled from the core of sago palms that is a staple food for many lowland villages in the country. The smaller pots like many of those in this lot are called noranggau and are used to store fresh sago while larger pots are used to store the starch once it's smoked. Additionally, the lot includes a decorative roof ridge/gable decoration with a bird and figure often used inside or decorating men's Spirit houses. Though these aren't often used anymore, they are still made for sale. Two of the smallest pots feature the original label by Marc noting they were made in Aibom with effigies decorating them. The items range from about 5'' x 5.75'' x 5'' to 10'' x 12.5'' x 10'' in size. With expected handling and wear including age-related oxidation of the pottery, natural imperfections, surface debris/wear from display and use, cracks, and some scratches/chipping, the group is in Fair condition. Due to size and/or weight, special shipping arrangements may apply. From Disney Legend Inductees - The Marc and Alice Davis Archive.
