DescriptionAlice in Wonderland Mad Hatter Tea Party Production Cel Setup on Key Master Background (Walt Disney, 1951). "Let's all congratulate us with another cup of tea, a very merry unbirthday to you!" Alice applauds the madcap and wacky performance of the Mad Hatter and March Hare during the unforgettable tea party scene. Seen at the 42:28 mark of the 1951 absurdist Disney masterpiece Alice in Wonderland, this isn't only the greatest tea party Key Master setup we have ever seen, it is one of the greatest pieces of Alice production art ever. A magnificent background rendered masterfully in gouache, it features a detailed establishing shot of the whole scene: the cluttered table stretching back into space in curvilinear fashion, the colorful hanging lights and the rolling hedgerows, all guiding your eye to Alice in the big red chair. The wonderful and colorful backgrounds of the film are credited to Claude Coats, Ray Huffine, Ralph Hulett, Art Riley, Brice Mack, Dick Anthony and Thelma Witmer, all of whom were guided expertly by the whimsical stylings of the great concept artist Mary Blair. This unbelievably rare piece was last sold in an auction of the Herbert Black collection in New York on 6/27/1992, and this is the first time it has come to market in over 25 years. The cels are hand-inked and hand-painted on 16 field cels, and Alice's cel is from this exact shot. The Mad Hatter and the March Hare are studio-produced cels made by the Disney art props department for studio publicity use. The piece is framed under Plexiglas with a mat window size of 14.5" x 11" and an overall frame size of 23.5" x 20" with a depth of 1.25". The frame is sold as is. The background bears the notation 2069 Seq 8 Sc. 121. Very well preserved in the frame, this spectacular piece is in Fine condition.
