Alice in Wonderland Alice and the Executioner Concept Drawing by David Hall (Walt Disney, 1939). "Off with her head!" In Didier Ghez's informative book, They Drew As They Pleased -- The Hidden Art of Disney's Musical Years (The 1940s Part One) he writes, "David Hall joined the Disney story department on March 1, 1939 and immediately began working on Alice in Wonderland. In his first few months at Disney, he drew more than 400 pieces of story art to present his vision of Alice in Wonderland. His creations were elaborate, highly rendered, and rather close to the look of the book's original drawings by John Tenniel." Mr. Hall's work was showcased to the public in in the giant Golden Book, Walt's Surprise Package. Later, in 1986, an entire book called Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was published by Little Simon in New York, featuring David Hall's previously unpublished illustrations for Walt Disney Productions. This lot is a detailed graphite drawing on 12 field 5-peghole background board of Alice with the guillotine executioner next to her during her sentencing. It is hand-signed by Mr. Hall in the bottom left border. The board is 12" x 9" and the art area measures 8" x 6". David Hall signed originals are rare and very sought after. Minor handling and edge wear. In Very Good condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
