DescriptionAlice in Wonderland Alice and Flamingo Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1951). This lively rough animation drawing of Alice and the uncooperative flamingo bird was created by a Disney animator in development of a scene in Walt Disney's animated feature based on the stories by Lewis Carroll. The Queen of Hearts entices Alice into a mad game of croquet, played with a hedgehog as a ball, flamingoes as mallets, and methods decidedly in favor of the Queen. The Queen takes her first two shots and receives enthusiastic applause from the assembled cards; Alice "wonders about odd way Queen plays croquet," then "decides it's the thing to do" and starts applauding as well, in two scenes supervised by Hal Ambro. Then Milt Kahl takes over the animation of Alice from that point, and supervises all the scenes in which she struggles with the flamingo until she finally masters the bird moments before taking her first swing. Milt Kahl (1909 – 1987), one of Walt Disney's master animators known as his "Nine Old Men," supervised these scenes, and this is likely one of his drawings. The animator wrote the designation "162" at lower right to indicate this original's place in the scene. The drawing is in graphite on 16 field animation paper, with an approximate image size of 7.5" x 8.75". Condition is Very Good with minor handling wear.
