Alice Comedies Character Model Sheet (Walt Disney, c. 1920s). Disney animation history began when Walt Disney, along with Ub Iwerks, Hugh Harmon, Rudolph Ising, and several others, worked on Walt Disney's Kansas City Laugh-O-Gram animated cartoon series. This is a very rare animator's practice model sheet of one of Walt Disney's first animated characters -- Julius the Cat. This character was seen in Walt's early series of live action/animated shorts based on Alice in Wonderland. The Alice Comedies series first began in 1923, with 6-year old actress Virginia Davis (1918 - 2009) playing Alice. NOTE: Virginia Davis has hand-signed this rare piece of Disney animation history in the bottom center of the artwork. Over 50 Alice Comedy shorts were produced. Artwork is done in graphite on a 12 field, 2-peghole animation sheet. An amazing twelve images of Julius are on this model sheet. Images range from 2" - 4". This piece was originally sold at an early 1990s Les Clark Estate sale. Number 52 is written on the bottom right corner. Minor handling and edge wear. Tiny tear in upper right corner, nowhere near any image. Artwork is in Very Good condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
