DescriptionA Hare Grows in Manhattan Bugs Bunny Magazine Illustration (Warner Brothers, 1945). "The Smoke of lower Manhattan, N.Y. was settlin' on the good earth in a fourth-floor-front window box. Me dear old mother looked up and said weakly, "What's up, Doc?" It was me, I was born. I never forgot them words." This narrative serves as the opening lines to Bugs Bunny's autobiographical article featured in the December 1945 issue of Coronet Magazine. The special seven-page insert was titled "A Hare Grows in Manhattan" and was clearly the inspiration for the Friz Freleng-directed theatrical short of the same title released two years later. This is an original illustration of Bugs in Knight's armor from page two as he reflects on his "cast-iron personality". The 4' x 9.5" image is masterfully hand-painted in gouache on 7.5" x 11.5" paper with registration marks under the mat. "Warner Brothers Dec 45" is handwritten on the back. This is masterfully detailed one-of-a-kind published illustration of Bugs Bunny from an all but forgotten magazine article that went on to become one of the character's most memorable theatrical appearances. It's a true vintage survivor from this animation icon's early history. The artwork is in a 9" x 12" mat with a 6" x 10" opening. Minor handling; otherwise, condition is Very Good.
