1001 Arabian Nights Concept Painting, Bob "Yoshi" Inman (UPA, 1959). Gorgeous concept painting from the 1959 UPA feature, 1001 Arabian Nights. This was one of only two feature-length productions from the famous studio (largely populated by former Disney employees), the other being 1962's Gay-Purr-ee. The film is a VERY loose retelling of the Aladdin story, and here Magoo plays "Abdul Aziz Magoo" - Aladdin's near-sighted uncle! The famously "modern" stylized UPA backgrounds were largely done by longtime UPA and Hanna-Barbera employee, Bob "Yoshi" Inman (1927-2016), who has painted this piece as well. The piece is painted in tempera on smooth, hot-press paper and measures 12" x 9". Beautifully done, with M.C. Escher-like, "impossible-in-real-life" architecture, with much artistic license taken with the rules of perspective. The nighttime desert scene is moody and atmospheric with an abundance of blues and purples; soft lamp light is visible through windows. A starry, purple sky looms overhead. Captures perfectly the mysterious feel of the Arabian Nights stories. In Fine condition, has been protected with a sheet of acetate laid over the front.
