Hugo Pratt La Jeunesse de Corto Maltese
Story Page Original Art (Magazine à Suivre #51/Casterman,
1982).An original from La Jeunesse de Corto Maltese, first serialized in the influential Magazine À Suivre in 1982 and subsequently reprinted in album by Casterman in 1983. This dual publication history places the work at the intersection of prestigious magazine serialization and canonical hardcover edition.
The story unfolds in Northern China, in Manchuria, at the close of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905)-a now-distant conflict that Pratt carefully contextualized in his own preface, grounding the narrative in precise historical atmosphere.
Yet the dominant presence is not Corto himself, but the young Rasputin, who bursts from the opening sequences as a force of disruption. Murderous, deceitful, thieving, contemptuous of military order and moral codes alike, Rasputin single-handedly drives the narrative forward. He is the embodiment of chaos-volatile, excessive, and unmistakably "larger than life"-and one of the most compelling antiheroes in European comics.
A historically grounded and action-packed page from the Corto origin cycle, with notable publication history and the commanding presence of Rasputin.
Original material from this period rarely surfaces, and when it does, it is typically limited to a single strip. This page is exceptionally complete, comprising all four strips-an increasingly scarce and highly compelling opportunity.
Ink and a felt-tip on Bristol board with an image area of 18.25" x 25.25". Light toning and handling wear. In Very Good condition.
