Description

Mac Raboy Master Comics #27 Captain Marvel Jr. Cover Original Art (Fawcett, 1942). This absolute classic is possibly the most iconic Golden Age superhero cover art known to exist! The Captain Marvel Jr. "V for Victory" cover by Mac Raboy ranks among the best that the stylish Golden Age artist ever created, and it's hard to imagine a WWII-era cover that more perfectly encapsulates the entire era.
In contrast to the cartoonish style that C. C. Beck brought to Captain Marvel, Raboy created a more realistic, often somber tone, lending a more serious style to Cap's younger charge, whose stories were actually targeting older readers. If Cap Jr.'s stance here reminds you of some other famous character, think Elvis Presley! It's no secret that the King of Rock & Roll was a comic book fan, especially of Captain Marvel Jr., whose hair style and costume-fashion sensibility were greatly admired by the then-teenage Elvis.
Raboy's art career started with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) of the Great Depression. In the 1940s, he began working at the Harry "A" Chesler Studio, later becoming a regular artist for Captain Marvel Jr. and The Green Lama. Patriotic covers were, of course, quite popular during World War II and provided some of the most memorable of the Golden Age; for example, Superman #14, All-Star Comics #12, and World's Finest Comics #7, along with gems like this by Raboy.
This masterpiece was created ink over graphite on Bristol board trimmed to 10.25" x 13.75" with an image area of 9.75" x 13.5", then affixed directly to another Bristol board measuring 15.5" x 20". There has been extensive restoration done on the art section, including modern replacement stats of the caption box, logo, and all trade dressing, all affixed directly to the art board. There is extensive beige paint touch-up and cover-up on the image, and the backing board has restoration on all four corners. The art has been extended from the art board by a quarter-inch at the top onto the board, which may not be the original backing board for the art. Matted to 19" x 22.75" and in Good condition, presenting as in Very Good condition.
