The Legend of Zelda - Wata 8.0 A Sealed [NES TM, No Rev-A, First Production], NES Nintendo 1987 USA
DALLAS, Texas (November 1, 2021) — More than 1,700 bidders seeking centerpiece additions to their collections drove 17 lots to six-figure results, leading Heritage Auctions' Video Games Signature® Auction to $8,179,434 in total sales Oct. 29-31.

"We offered a trove of incredible trophy pieces in this auction, and the overall results of this auction speak to the strength of the market for collectible Video Games." Heritage Auctions Video Games Managing Director Valarie McLeckie said. "It's safe to say that the exceptional results indicate the recognition among serious collectors that Heritage Auctions' Video Games sales continue to be can't-miss events."

A rare copy of The Legend of Zelda - Wata 8.0 A Sealed [NES TM, No Rev-A, First Production], NES Nintendo 1987 USA drew more than two dozen bids before finishing at $705,000 to lead the event's top lots. The copy was discovered by a consignor after the exceptional results of a Heritage Auction in July that sent collectors poring over their own collections. This copy is from the rarest and most desired variant of the game — the true first production.

From another blue-chip franchise, Super Mario Bros. - Wata 9.4 A Sealed [Hangtab, 2 Code, Mid-Production], NES Nintendo 1985 USA drew 20 bids until it reached $492,000. Sealed hangtab copies of any NES game are in high demand, especially those in exceptional condition. This copy is the highest-graded — and just the second overall — hangtab copy with the "2 Code" sub-variant ever offered through Heritage Auctions.

Super Mario Bros. 2 - Wata 9.8 A+ Sealed [Rev-A, Round SOQ, First Production], NES Nintendo 1988 USA also drew 20 bids before closing at $324,000.This copy is the finest copy of any variant of the game ever offered through Heritage Auctions, significantly exceeding the Wata 9.2 copy sold in May 2020.

The auction included the first sealed copy of Sonic the Hedgehog - Wata 9.6 A Sealed [Made in Japan, Early Production], Genesis Sega 1991 USA offered at Heritage in the last two years, a game so prized that it reached $312,000. Sealed copies of this historic Sega Genesis game are in high demand; even the Sonic the Hedgehog movie did not unearth sealed copies. This copy's condition surpasses that of the previously offered Wata 9.4 B+ that Heritage Auctions sold in May 2019.

Several records were set in the auction, including:

One of fewer than 10 known sealed copies of Resident Evil - Wata 9.6 A+ Sealed [Ridged Longbox, First Production] (The Dreamer Collection), PS1 Capcom 1996 USA, from "The Dreamer Collection," soared to $264,000. The series has produced eight major installments, a list of spin-offs, a movie series and an animated TV series.

The highest-graded copy of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! - Wata 9.8 A++ Sealed [Oval SOQ TM, Later Production], NES Nintendo 1987 USA ever offered at Heritage Auctions reached a final price never seen anywhere when it set a world record at $312,000. No other Wata 9.8 copy is ever known to have reached public auction before, meaning this copy very well could be the only one to reach its lofty grade.

Another world record was set when Pokémon Red Version - Wata 9.8 A++ Sealed [Sandshrew, First Production], GameBoy Nintendo 1998 USA climbed to $156,000. The result for the highest-graded copy Heritage Auctions ever has offered exceeds even the $132,000 paid for a Wata 9.4 example Heritage sold in July. This game joins Pokémon Blue in the first installment of the Pokémon series.

Just the second example Heritage Auctions has offered from the initial production of GoldenEye 007 - Wata 9.8 A++ Sealed, N64 Nintendo 1997 USA sold for $192,000 to set a new record for the title, running to 10 times the previous Heritage record of $19,200 that was set in July 2020.

Other top results from the auction include, but were not limited to:

  •  Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! - Wata 9.4 A+ Sealed [Rev-A, Round SOQ, Mid-Production], NES Nintendo 1987 USA: $216,000
  •  GoldenEye 007 - Wata 9.8 A++ Sealed, N64 Nintendo 1997 USA: $192,000
  •  The Legend of Zelda - Wata 9.6 A+ Sealed [Oval SOQ TM, Later Production], NES Nintendo 1987 USA: $156,000
  •  Super Mario Bros. - Wata 9.4 A Sealed [Rev-A, Round SOQ, Mid-Production], NES Nintendo 1985 USA: $150,000
