High-Grade Comics Grab Spotlight in First Modern Age Showcase Auction
|Event is the first at Heritage Auctions to feature comics published after 1980
“This is a historic event for Modern Age comics, those from 1980 through today,” Heritage Auctions Comics Specialist Xavier Chavez said. “These will be some of the most important comics to future generations of collectors.
“This is the first time an event like this is being held at Heritage Auctions, and it has the most Signature Series books – certified signed copies witnessed by CGC – ever offered. There obviously is lots of value in Golden Age and Silver Age comics, but there is a lot of value to be found in Modern Age, as the next generation gets nostalgic, buying back memories. There are more than 550 lots in this sale, but what makes this a truly exceptional event is the quality that can be found throughout the offered inventory. No comic in this auction is older than 1980, but there is a very real chance that more than 50 comics in the sale could bring more than $1,000 each.”
Highlights in the sale include, but are not limited to:
Edge of Spider-Verse #2 Variant Edition (Marvel, 2014) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages, which features the first appearance of the new Spider-Woman (Gwen Stacy). According to the July CGC census, the offered copy is one of 283 known copies, with only one copy known to carry a higher grade.
Wolverine #1 Signature Series: Frank Miller and Others (Marvel, 1982) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages – from Wolverine’s first solo series, limited to four issues. This copy is absolutely extraordinary, considering it bears nine signatures and still carries a 9.8 grade.
Thorn Tales From the Lantern #nn (No publisher listed, 1983) CGC VF+ 8.5 White pages – one of just eight CGC-graded copies, it is the only copy graded at 8.5, with just four graded higher
Ultimate Fallout #4 (Marvel, 2011) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages, which includes the first appearance of Miles Morales as Spider-Man and is considered by many to be the modern-day equivalent of Amazing Fantasy #15 – must have for Spidey collectors.
Spawn #1 Color Error (Image, 1992) CGC Qualified NM/MT 9.8 White pages – the issue features the first appearance of Spawn, but what makes this issue an absolute must-have is the error in the color printing process: not enough black ink was included, creating a kaleidoscope of color on the bold cover. CGC does not consider it its own variant, so instead of a blue label, it comes with a green (CGC Qualified) grade; it is one of fewer than 200 known to exist.
The Walking Dead #1 Black Label (Image, 2003) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages is an extraordinary issue, thanks in part to the enormously popular television show with the same name. Copies of this comic are always in demand with collectors due to its low print run, but those – including the offered copy – with the advisory printed in black instead of white are in even higher demand.
