Description

The Amazing Spider-Man #4 Twin Cities pedigree (Marvel, 1963) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages. This is the first copy of #4 to be certified as high as 9.6, despite 700 CGC submissions of unrestored copies to date! And this is the only issue of the entire Amazing Spider-Man run that hadn't yet seen a 9.6 or higher certification.

Issue #4 had always been considered a tough book to find in high grade -- indeed, back in 1995 a Comic Book Marketplace panel of experts called it the second-hardest issue (of the first 50) to find in VF or better.

The hardcore Spidey collector will want to spend a long time looking at the sharp vignette at upper left (one of our in-house gurus is fond of saying that if the vignette on a Silver Age Marvel looks nice, the rest of the book invariably does too) as well as the sharp (in both senses of the word) upper right corner. This could well give Mr. Dahlberg's copy of #2 a run for its money as the most valuable comic in the collection.

Making his first appearance in the issue is the Sandman, who's now known to more than just hardcore hobbyists since he appeared in one of the Spider-Man movie (and the tons of merchandise that went with it)! The connoisseur of all things Peter Parker will also note the debuts of two of the key early gals in the strip's ongoing soap opera, namely Betty Brant and Liz Allen. Steve Ditko drew the cover as well as the interior. Overstreet 2010 NM- 9.2 value = $6,800. CGC census 4/11: 1 in 9.6, none higher. From the Gary Dahlberg Collection.
