Description

Charles Schulz Unprecedented, Unpublished Pre-Peanuts Daily Try-Out Comic Strip Original Art (c. 1949). Here's a peek at an incredibly cool, previously unpublished Charles Schulz try-out strip featuring characters who bear more than a passing resemblance to Charlie Brown and Snoopy! Schulz's early L'il Folks strips ran from 1947-early 1950 in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, and they always ran in a rectangular format, with separate panel cartoons contained within -- Li'l Folks was never a daily format comic strip. In 1948, Schulz tried to get his feature syndicated, with no luck -- but those proposed mock-ups were individual panel cartoons such as those that made up L'il Folks. Schulz sold 17 gag cartoons to the Saturday Evening Post beginning in 1948, and the first Peanuts strip is dated October 2, 1950. From the first, the Peanuts dailies were always in a four-panel format. Stylistically, this three-panel example seems solidly from late 1949-50, towards the end of L'il Folks, and the beginning of Peanuts. Logically, this strip seems like a try-out strip for Peanuts -- when you look at the very first dailies, Snoopy and Charlie Brown are very similar to the unnamed characters in this laugh-riot. The image area of this remarkable daily measures approximately 22" x 6.5", and it has been matted and framed to an overall size of 27" x 12". The art is in Excellent condition. From the Frieda Rich Collection.
