Who is Comic Artist Winsor McCay?

Winsor McCay, born Zenas Winsor McCay was a highly influential cartoonist and early animator, who is well-known for his comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland and for his early animated cartoon Gertie the Dinosaur. 

What Comics Did Winsor McCay Illustrate and Write?

His first continuing comic strip was Mr. Goodenough which started running in 1904, later that same year his first popular comic strip Little Sammy Sneeze was debuted. Due to contractual obligations, McCay created the pen name “Silas” which he used to produce work for other newspapers. In 1904 as well his longest-running strip, Dream of the Rarebit Fiend was created under the name Silas. Then, the year after in 1905 was the start of what is considered by many his magnum opus, the Sunday strip of Little Nemo in Slumberland was first printed. McCay went on to be incredibly successful, worked in vaudeville performances, completed ten animated films between 1911 and 1921, did editorial cartoons, and even was at the scene of the Lindbergh kidnapping sketching what he saw before the area was closed to the public. 

How Did Winsor McCay Get Started?

McCay started his artistic career in 1889 producing posters, pamphlets, and advertisement material which he continued doing throughout the 1890s until he began freelance work for the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune. It wasn’t until 1900 when he started working at the Cincinnati Enquirer that he adopted the Art Nouveau style that his work became synonymous with. He later joined the New York Herald which is where he produced most of his work and the publisher that printed his most famous comic strips.
