Who is Comic Artist Sal Buscema?

Sal Buscema is a comic artist and younger brother to Marvel Comics great, John Buscema. Sal is no slouch himself, working for ten years as the artist on The Incredible Hulk, as well as Captain America, Spectacular Spider-Man, and many other Marvel comics in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

What is Comic Artist Sal Buscema Famous For?

Buscema started his time on The Avengers in the late sixties, before shuffling around to The Uncanny X-Men and the Sub-Mariner in the early 1970s. By the end of the decade, Buscema would get on The Incredible Hulk, a title he would stay at for ten years. After his work there, Buscema penciled and inked The Spectacular Spider-Man for 100 issues. His thirty years at Marvel represent one of the longest and most prolific careers of any writer or artist there.

How Did Sal Buscema Get Started?

For Sal Buscema, comics were a family business. His brother, John, was a Marvel legend in his own regard, and both came to comics naturally. Buscema started in the late 1950s and 1960s in advertising but eventually started to work for Marvel as a freelancer by the end of that decade, mostly at the request of his brother who was already receiving monthly work as a freelance artist.

What Comics Did Sal Buscema Illustrate?

What Comic Characters Did Sal Buscema Create?

While Buscema didn’t create many characters for Marvel comics, his fingerprints are everywhere on their output for the three decades he worked there. Perhaps his biggest contribution is co-creating the Hulkbusters, a covert US force designed to take down the Hulk. He considered the Hulk his all-time favorite character, and his love showed in the quality of his work there, taking the Hulk from a middling comic book to one of Marvel’s most popular by the end of his time there.
