Who is painter Robert Bateman?
Robert Bateman is a naturalist and artist whose paintings of birds and landscapes are known throughout the world. Bateman mainly works with acrylics on several different mediums. His prints for Mill Pond Press have raised millions of dollars for environmental causes. As such, in 1999 the Audubon Society of Canada declared Bateman one of the top 100 environmental proponents of the 20th century.
Bateman has won a number of awards, both in the naturalist and artistic fields. He has thirteen honorary doctorates and is an Honorary Director for the North American Native Plant Society. He is an officer of the Order of Canada, a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and received the Queen’s Jubilee medal in 2002. His works have been collected in over 20 books, starting with the Art of Robert Bateman (1981) and most recently, Robert Bateman’s Canada (2017). The Robert Bateman Centre is the permanent home for his art and is located in Inner Harbour in Victoria, British Columbia.

Robert Bateman is a naturalist painter whose portraits of birds and picturesque landscapes have earned him an international following. These paintings are typically acrylic or oil on a variety of media and most often feature a bird in its natural habitat. Bateman has said that he takes inspiration from the Group of Seven, a band of seven Canadian Landscape painters who founded the Algonquin School in the 19th century. Since 1957, Bateman has frequently traveled the world, seeking inspiration for his work and filling sketchbooks with ideas. One of these sketchbooks was published in 2015, as Life Sketches: A Memoir by Simon & Schuster. He is considered one of the premier Canadian landscape artists working today.
How did painter Robert Bateman get started?
Robert Bateman was born in 1930 in Toronto, Ontario. Early on, he was fascinated by the birds that lived in the surrounding Canadian wilderness. In school, he learned about the famed Canadian art group, the Group of Seven, and found inspiration in their landscape paintings. He graduated with a degree in geography from Victoria College, then later attended the Ontario College of Education where he got his teaching certificate. For a time Bateman worked as a high school art and geography teacher, but later became a full-time artist after receiving recognition in the 1970s. By 1987 his show at the Smithsonian in Washington DC drew the largest crowd ever for a living artist.
