Robert Crumb was born on August 30, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He and his four brothers and sisters all produced home-made comics as children. Crumb's fist published work was as an artist for American Greetings cards. In 1967, Crumb moved to San Francisco, where he produced the first issue of Zap Comix, which kickstarted the entire Underground Comix movement. Among his famous creations are Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural. He was the subject of Terry Zwigoff's 1994 documentary film, Crumb. Robert Crumb and his wife, cartoonist Aline, currently live in France.
