Don Ivan Punchatz (September 8th, 1936 – October 22nd, 2009) was a fantasy and science fiction artist known for his lovely and richly colored paintings. His book illustration covers include: Philip Jose Farmer’s A Barnstormer In Oz; Isaac Asimov’s Foundation and Empire; John Wyndham’s The Secret People; and another Texas native, Shane Johnson’s Star Trek: Worlds of the Federation.
Punchatz was critically acclaimed and his package and logo art for id Software’s Doom video game was named the second best game box art of all time by GameSpy in 1993.
He worked for many publications in his long career… publications as varied as: Heavy Metal; National Geographic; Playboy: and Time Magazine. He has illustrated album covers, including the cover for Steve Hunter’s Swept Away album.
