Fred Ray. (American, 1920-2001): An American comic book artist and illustrator perhaps best known among comic book fans as the Superman, Batman, and World's Finest Comics cover artist of the early forties, whose work helped shape the defining look of those iconic superhero DC characters. Ray is also celebrated for his more than two decades as the artist of the DC feature, Tomahawk. Ray was an accomplished and imaportant authority on the military uniforms of the Revolutionary War and was a consultant to the Smithsonian Institution. He also wrote books on American history, including a remarkable self-published series of booklets on American forts, including the Alamo
