Doug Beekman (American, b.b. 1952)

At the age of 19, Doug Beekman enrolled at the Art Students League of New York, where he studied with Daniel Greene, David Leffel and the late Robert E. Schulz. Beekman has created fantasy illustrations for numerous book and magazine publishers, and has been honored as a three time award winner in the prestigious Spectrum competition, in addition to honors from Communication Arts, the World Fantasy Symposium, and the Overseas Press Club. Beekman has exhibited at the Delaware Art Museum, Canton Museum of Art, the Society of Illustrators of New York, the Salmagundi Club, the Words and Pictures Museum, and in numerous gallery exhibits.

Doug Beekman - Savage Sword of Conan #148 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1988). An outstanding cover from the fan-favorite black and white magazine has Conan battling a horde of demon-creatures. It's beautifully rendered in earth tones, you can almost feel the axe slicing through the dank air to bring doom to all who oppose the savage Cimmerian. The overall size is 21" x 30", and the art is in Excellent condition.

Bringing a sense of power and urgency to his paintings, Beekman was perfect for the adventurous, violent milieu in which the Warrior-King of Cimmeria often found himself. Whether he was battling demons, wizards, men-at-arms or dinosaurs (as shown here), Conan remained a fearsome opponent, always up to whatever challenge was thrown at him. This is a particularly large painting, measuring approximately 19.5" x 29.5", and in Excellent condition. Conan images are becoming more and more popular among collectors, and a finer rendering than this would be hard to find.

Doug Beekman - Original Cover Art for Conan: Lord of the Black River (Tor Books, 1996). The unconquerable warrior-king of all Cimmeria, Conan the Barbarian has been a mainstay of heroic fantasy ever since his debut in the December, 1932 issue of Weird Tales. Still popular today, Conan's adventures continue to be chronicled by a new generation of writer's. Chief among this new breed is Leonard Carpenter, whose epic novel, Conan: Lord of the Black River, was graced by this powerful cover by long time Conan-artist Doug Beekman. Best known for his covers for Marvel's Savage Tales magazine, Beekman's Conan is a powerful figure, ready to face any danger and brave any peril. The deadly monster he faces in this striking painting is definitely outnumbered, and surely only moments away from utter defeat. Measuring approximately 19.75" x 30" overall, this piece is in excellent condition and has been signed by the artist in the lower right.

With a masterful sweep of his brush, illustrator Doug Beekman realized this powerful version of Conan, the greatest warrior of them all! This cursory creation is a color preliminary for a more polished illustration, titled, "A Killing Thirst," which was published as the cover to Savage Sword of Conan #126.
