Superboy #1 (DC, 1949) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
A thirty-year run began here for this enduring series which remained in publication even through those difficult pre-Silver Age days when superheroes were largely out of fashion. Maybe DC's formula for the book had something to do with it -- in the early days of this title, there were no super-powered villains (young Lex Luthor, etc.) and Superboy wasn't whisked off to the future to join the Legion of Super-Heroes every three hours. Instead, less flashy (but well-written) tales were the order of the day, usually with a subtle moral for young readers. The Boy of Steel's debut issue features a Wayne Boring cover and John Sikela art. This is a nice, bright copy, with a vivid yellow background that really pops the red and blue of Superman's costume right off the cover! This tight copy with square corners will be all but impossible to improve upon. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $12,800. CGC census 10/06: 1 in 9.2, none higher.

Startling Comics #49 (Better Publications, 1948) CGC NM 9.4 Cream to off-white pages.
Surely one of the most collectible comics of the Golden Age, this issue makes the rest of the
Startling
run pale in comparison! Of course, the robot/bondage scene is from the airbrush of Alex Schomburg. What more reason do you need to go after this census-topper? Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $5,800. CGC census 10/06: 2 in 9.4, none higher.

Star Spangled Comics #1 Mile High pedigree (DC, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages.
The Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy, having debuted in
Action Comics
, made their second appearance (and had the second half of their origin told) in this issue. That's them on Hal Sherman's robot cover. And if you thought wall-walking, web-shooting heroes didn't come along until the sixties, let us call your attention to the Tarantula, whose origin and first appearance are in this issue. The issue is a Gerber "scarce." Overstreet 2006 VF/NM 9.0 value = $5,911; NM- 9.2 value = $8,300. CGC census 10/06: 1 in 9.0, 1 higher.

Suspense Comics #9 Mile High pedigree (Continental Magazines, 1945) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
The entire run of this series is getting more and more popular -- not only is it one of the first series to have horror-type cover scenes, it's got some of the earliest comic book covers by L. B. Cole. He would take his place among the greats thanks to efforts like this eyeball cover! And inside the book, there's the formidable lineup of Mr. Nobody and Satan. This is the only copy certified above 8.5 by CGC to date. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $2,200. CGC census 9/06: 1 in 9.4, none higher.

USA Comics #1 (Timely, 1941) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages.
One of the top 20 Timely books, this issue stands out from the remainder of the run thanks to the striking Jack Kirby cover, which looks fantastic on this excellent copy. The series was a tryout showcase of all-new characters, boasting the first appearance of the Whizzer as well as of Mister Liberty (later Major Liberty), Rockman, the Defender, and Jack Frost. Simon and Kirby added one page of interior art; Basil Wolverton handled art chores on the Rockman story. One of our favorite anecdotes about this book: Timely feared that the government would claim a trademark to the title, but that they'd be off the hook if they didn't put periods between the letters U.S.A. It's so odd, it must be true! While a couple of copies have been graded higher, we've seen the Larson and Rockford copies, neither of which have the unblemished yellow top area that this sharp VF copy does. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $8,753. CGC census 9/06: 3 in 8.0, 4 higher.

Suspense Comics #5 Mile High pedigree (Continental Magazines, 1944) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages.
Top covers are the main reason the title is coveted, and this one's by one of the top cover artists in the biz, L. B. Cole. And our offering is in superb condition -- what else would you expect from Edgar Church's Mile High copy? Although this book is housed in a Universal Blue holder, CGC notes, "Very minor glue, very minor color touch." We'll be darned if
we
can spot it! Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $2,900. CGC census 9/06: 2 in 9.2, none higher.

Terry-Toons Comics #50 Davis Crippen ("D" Copy) pedigree (Timely, 1946) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
Heckle and Jeckle made their first comic book appearance right here, in a
Timely
book! This issue was close on the heels of the twins' cartoon debut. They went on to have a long comic book career at St. John, Dell/Gold Key, and elsewhere. The Crippen copy of Mighty Mouse's first appearance in
Terry-Toons
#38 sold for seven times Guide in a previous auction, and we hasten to add that it had a lower grade than this specimen! We expect healthy interest in this copy, too, especially since it's the only copy graded above 9.2. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $500. CGC census 9/06: 1 in 9.6, none higher.

This copy has sharper corners and a nicer overall appearance than the Ohio copy (which is the other 9.4 book on the census). This copy and the #24 we're offering are both newly certified, and they're from the first batch of "D" copies that came to the market, before the name Davis Crippen was known to the collecting world at large. Whiz Comics

Captain Marvel Adventures
#3,
Bulletman
#2,
Wow Comics
#3, and
Master Comics
#18. It's important to note that these books are not remaindered copies rebound into this collection, but were specially printed for this title, prepared at the same time as the originals. The book itself is well-preserved for such an unusual item; while the cover does show some wear (including some light soiling and small areas of color loss along the spine edges), the spine itself is remarkably solid and and firm, and the cover colors remain vibrant. This is definitely a title that doesn't come our way often -- in fact, this is the first time we've seen a copy of #1! Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $2,516.

Tales From the Crypt #41 Gaines File pedigree 1/12 (EC, 1954) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
A wonderfully frightening scene on the cover sets the mood for this issue. Interior art is by the incredibly talented cast of Jack Davis, George Evans, Jack Kamen, and Graham Ingels. This comic's deep blacks, bright whites, sharp corners, and all-around freshness make this book every bit the 9.4 that the CGC's graders have assigned it. This copy is tied with two others as the highest CGC-graded to date. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $600. CGC census 10/06: 3 in 9.4, none higher.

Not only is this issue considered the first Western comic (tied for the honor with Chesler's
Star Ranger
), it's one of the first comic books to focus on a single theme, at a time when most series were a mix of very different genres a la
Famous Funnies

Eisner, but it's quite early in that great artist's career, appearing just half a year after his debut in

USA Comics #4 (Timely, 1942) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white pages.
A Syd Shores Japanese war cover marks this early issue. The title, because of its brief run and the fact that it was "done" by 1945 makes finding high-grade copies elusive. Here's one! Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $1,669. CGC census 9/06: 1 in 8.0, 3 higher.

Spy Smasher #1 (Fawcett, 1941) CGC FN/VF 7.0 Off-white to white pages.
If you haven't seen the silver metallic cover on this early Fawcett key, you have a real treat in store for you. Fawcett experimented with this shiny cover design to make the issue leap off the stands -- and they succeeded. For those who enjoyed Spy Smasher's adventures in Whiz Comics, his own title presented 64 pages dedicated entirely to the Nazi-busting superhero. This attractive copy is currently one of the finest known, with only one other ranking higher in CGC's census report. Overstreet 2006 FN 6.0 value = $1,083; VF 8.0 value = $2,347. CGC census 10/06: 3 in 7.0, 1 higher.
