Marvel Comics #1 Larson pedigree (Timely, 1939) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages.
The combination of one of the top three comics in the hobby and one of the most famous pedigrees in comic collecting should have every comic fan's eye on this book when it comes up for auction. The only three copies graded higher all have page quality inferior to this specimen! The condition of this copy should satisfy any collector. It's a nicely centered book (many copies you'll see of this book are printed a bit askew), and what's particularly pleasing is that it's free of the foxing that plagues many a Lamont Larson comic. In fact, the back cover doesn't have discoloration of any sort, it looks fantastic! The "Nov." cover date with "Oct." blacked out is common to most copies of the issue.
Marvel Comics
#1 was listed as the most valuable comic book by Overstreet for years, and while it has since ceded that spot to
Action Comics
#1, for the Marvel fan there's no topping this issue here. Timely's very first comic book, this has the first newsstand appearances of both the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner. The series became Timely's flagship title, called
Marvel Mystery Comics
from #2 on. It's the start of the Marvel Universe, a set of characters that left its mark on American popular culture, selling millions of comic books and starring in TV shows, movies, and more. Also in this issue were the first comic book appearances of Ka-Zar and the original Angel. The cover is by science fiction pulp illustrator Frank R. Paul. The interior content was produced by the artistic "shop" known as Funnies, Inc., the best-known artists of which are Bill Everett (who created the Sub-Mariner and drew the character's story in this issue) and Carl Burgos (who did the same for the Human Torch). A few notes on the pedigree: the collection of Lamont Larson, who grew up in Wausa, Nebraska, is revered for having almost all of the major key issues from the "meat" of the Golden Age (1938-41) as

March of Comics #nn (#4) Donald Duck (K. K. Publications, Inc., 1947) CGC FN/VF 7.0 Off-white pages.
This scarce giveaway comic, featuring Donald Duck in "Maharajah Donald," is known as one of the hardest to find Carl Barks duck books. Overstreet speculates that the cover art may be by Walt Kelly, while Carl Barks performed his magic on the interior art. Gerber rates this issue a "7", calling it "scarce" and estimating that only 21 to 50 copies still exist. According the CGC's census data, there is currently only one higher graded copy of this issue. Overstreet 2006 FN 6.0 value = $2,250; VF 8.0 value = $4,200. CGC census 9/06: 1 in 7.0, 1 higher.

Plastic Man #nn (#1) Mile High pedigree (Quality, 1943) CGC VF/NM 9.0 White pages.
We've waxed poetic about the work of Jack Cole in our descriptions before, but it bears repeating that Cole was a stand-out talent during the Golden Age of comics. His greatest achievement has to be that supple, stretchable superhero, Plastic Man. Here is a fantastic copy of the Pliable One's first solo comic, sub-titled "The Game Of Death" -- but then, it's a copy from the grand-daddy of all comic collections, the Edgar Church Mile High hoard. Of course it's fantastic! CGC notes the "classic skull cover" and an appearance by Tojo, but for us the phrase that says it all is "Jack Cole story, cover and art." Hear, hear! Overstreet 2006 VF/NM 9.0 value = $4,612; NM- 9.2 value = $6,500. CGC census 9/06: 1 in 9.0, 1 higher.

Ibis The Invincible #1 Mile High pedigree (Fawcett, 1943) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
Graceful figures and outstanding draftsmanship are two Mac Raboy trademarks, and they're showcased superbly on this cover. While Ibis' series only went on to a six-issue run, he's one of Fawcett's more enduring characters, as a longtime standby in the pages of
Whiz Comics
. This issue also has the art of none other than Dave Berg, drawing the adventure of Sir Butch, a fella from Brooklyn who goes back in time (we kid you not!). Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $3,000. CGC census 10/06: 1 in 9.6, none higher.

In this beautiful Mile High copy, The Masked Ranger and his sidekick Pedro begin their series run as Bob Kane and Joe Shuster provide the interior art. The next closest book on the current CGC census is only a 6.5 and Gerber considers this issue to be "scarce." The whites on this cover are beyond belief. CGC notes, "Very minor amount of color touch on cover." A wonderful example of the Edgar Church Collection. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $2,325. CGC census 10/06: 1 in 9.6, none higher.

Undervalued? You could certainly make that argument about this book, the first appearance of Doctor Fate. It "guides" at one-quarter the price of the Spectre's debut in #52, yet it's no easier to find in high grade than #52 is! Of course, it's also one of the earliest Spectre outings, drawn by Bernard Baily who also did the cover art. Both Overstreet and Gerber gave this book the designation "scarce." Overstreet 2006 FN 6.0 value = $3,834; VF 8.0 value = $9,585. CGC census 10/06: 2 in 7.0, 2 higher.

DC's
other
superhero team debuts with this opening number. Consisting of several "second-string" characters -- Star Spangled Kid, Crimson Avenger, Shining Knight, Vigilante, the Green Arrow (and sidekicks), the series ran for fourteen issues before the title changed over to funny animal content. The team's origin is told here, and the Dummy, a villain usually associated with the Vigilante, is introduced. This copy still looks fresh, and is topped by one other in the current CGC census. Marvel Mystery Comics #22 Larson pedigree (Timely, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages.
It seems that Lamont Larson's Timely books only come onto the market about half as often as his DCs, so you'd best grab this one before it disappears into a collection for a few decades. All of the big names in Timely-town contributed here: Alex Schomburg (cover art), Bill Everett, Simon and Kirby (doing the Vision), and even youngster Stan Lee. Sensation Comics #1 (DC, 1942) CGC VG 4.0 Off-white pages.
This excellent original-owner copy is considered by Overstreet to be one of the 30 most valuable comic books. It features the second appearance of Wonder Woman, her debut coming in
All Star Comics
#8 only a month earlier. This is generally thought of as Part Two of her origin. The story that became the first episode of the 1970s TV show has her leaving Paradise Island and heading to the U.S. where she adopts her "Diana Prince" identity. Making their debuts in this issue were Wildcat, Mr. Terrific, and the Black Pirate by Sheldon Moldoff. Jon Blummer is credited with the issue's cover (despite what the CGC holder says), and the Wonder Woman story is drawn by H. G. Peter. Overstreet 2006 VG 4.0 value = $5,320. CGC census 9/06: 2 in 4.0, 18 higher.

This copy's a real "looker", and the only reason it didn't grade at least NM- 9.2 is a 1 inch spine split that's barely discernible. The Black Raiders, Miss Espionage, Merlin the Boy Magician, and Dr. Mephisto make for an eclectic mix, but the real draw here is a sensational cover by L. B. Cole. A detached front cover and centerfold led to the modest grade here, but look at what else is available: only six copies have been certified by CGC, none better than FN+. This long-running title was started off in grand fashion with the series' only Lou Fine cover! This was the only jungle series on the stands at the time, but it would run into lots and lots of competition just a few years in the future. The issue's got the origin and first appearance of Kaanga, who had the lead feature in all 163 issues of this series (though we were confused to see that Kaanga has the umlaut on the
first
A of his name here, somehow that got switched to the
second
A shortly thereafter!). Also making their first appearances were Camilla, Queen of the Lost Empire; Wambi the Jungle Boy; Tabu, Wizard of the Jungle (complete with origin); and Captain Terry Thunder and the Congo Lancers, all of whom were in

Patches #1-4 Group Mile High pedigree (Rural Home/Patches/Orbit, 1945-46).
The condition of these books is truly excellent -- we wouldn't be surprised if #2-4 hadn't ever been opened before we looked through them in the grading process. Issue #1 is VF/NM, #2 is NM-, #3 NM+, and #4 NM. The first issue is quite different from the rest of the series, and not just because of the first issue's eye-catching L. B. Cole cover: in #1, Patches is blond, and stories range from adventure to sports to dating, starring Patches in every case. Thereafter, the character had dark hair and Archie-esque teen humor was the order of the day. George Harrison provided much of the interior art. Approximate Overstreet value for group = $850.

Playboy #1 (HMH Publishing, 1953) Condition: FN+.
This issue started a multimedia phenomenon and made Hugh Hefner a household name. It's the very first
Playboy
magazine, which caused a splash by featuring a 1949 nude photo of Marilyn Monroe, but also held readers' interest thanks to a canny mix of features, including jokes, cartoons, and pictorials, but also a piece by Ambrose Bierce, a Sherlock Holmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle, a jazz article, and an article commending college football's return to the one-platoon system. The mag's introductory text says, "If we are able to give the American male a few extra laughs and a little diversion from the anxieties of the Atomic Age, we feel we've justified our existence." Note that this copy, like most we've seen, has no page number printed on page 3. This issue isn't easy to find in any condition, and this is a very nice-looking copy with some very minor staining on the cover and first few pages the only negative.

At this date, this premiere issue is too large for CGC to encapsulate, but it is significant to note that although subsequent issues are small enough for encasement, CGC has certified copies of just two issues of the title that ran for five years before its title change to

Post's "Jimminy and the Magic Book" was a well-done storyline in the Kelly style, but with plenty of unique touches, and deserves to be reprinted soon. This lovely pedigreed copy is very sharp and colorful; it's currently at the top of the CGC census list. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $250. CGC census 10/06: 1 in 9.2, none higher.

"Ballast" Comic Fanzine (Don Thompson, 1960) Condition: Very Fine.
Don Thompson, along with his lovely wife Maggie, made their name publishing fanzines and writing about comic books in the early 1960s. Don and Maggie's classic 'zine
Comic Art
originally ran from 1961 to 1968; Don also was co-author on one of the very first fan-oriented books on comics,
All In Color For a Dime
, which was based on articles by Don and Richard Lupoff which were originally published in Lupoff's
Xero
fanzine. Here, then, is Don's very first attempt at publishing a 'zine, prepared some two years before
Comic Art
. This appears to be the second, and last, issue, judging from the contents, although no number is present. And yes, Maggie was there, as Margaret Curtis, lending a helping hand here and there (including contributing some spot illustrations). All in all, a fascinating package for serious comic historians to pore over, or for you old fogey fans who were there to reminisce over. It's certainly one you won't find every day!
