Richie Rich #1 File Copy (Harvey, 1960) CGC NM+ 9.6 Cream to off-white pages.
If you're a Harvey collector, bookmark this page, because you're looking at the only 9.6, and highest-graded copy overall, that CGC has certified of this issue to date. It could be said that this issue started the whole Richie Rich phenomenon -- while the Poor Little Rich Boy had been a backup feature in every issue of
Little Dot
, and had two
Harvey Hits
tryout issues devoted to him, this series proved that he could carry his own book, and of course it wasn't too long before he was starring in many titles simultaneously, becoming one of the best-known characters in comics. Warren Kremer provided the visuals for this early outing (with Richie being waited on by Hawkins, this was before Cadbury took over as butler!). As with all Harveys, finding this in high grade is a tall order, and even a Fine copy would be a four-figure book. This lot presents an opportunity to own something nobody else has! Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $3,200. CGC census 4/06: 1 in 9.6, none higher.

Four Color (Series One) #1-12 Bound Volume (Dell, 1939-40).
We here at Heritage have had the good fortune to see many bound volumes of Dell comics pass through our doors during the recent years, but nothing has impressed this cataloger as much as this incredible book. It collects the first twelve issues of Dell's original
Four Color
series, in a beautifully preserved hardback volume. The comics inside are breathtaking, despite the fact all were trimmed during the binding process. All were apparent VF or better copies before binding; all have retained most of their original cover gloss and supple interior paper quality. And what comics they are -- #1 (Dick Tracy -- the first color comic book devoted to this character), #2 (Don Winslow of the Navy -- considered "rare" by Overstreet), #3 (Myra North), #4 (Donald Duck, featuring Al Taliaferro strip reprints), #5 (Smilin' Jack -- first comic book), #6 (Dick Tracy -- considered "scarce" by Overstreet), #7 (Gang Busters), #8 (Dick Tracy), #9 (Terry and the Pirates), #10 (Smilin' Jack), #11 (Smitty), and #12 (Little Orphan Annie). The binding itself is remarkable, featuring a light purple cloth cover, with extremely tight, perfect binding. This is quite a contrast to the actual Western Publishing Library volumes, many of which are now coming loose with age and use. We're not sure of the origins of this beautiful volume (it's possible these were from a Western bound volume that has since been professionally rebound), but if the finest set of
Four Color
comics is your goal, you could do no better than this! Although the inside copies still look VF or better, it's our policy to list VG values for bound volumes. Overstreet VG 4.0 value for group = $4,536.

Showcase #22 Green Lantern (DC, 1959) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages.
Feast your eyes on this, Silver Age fans, it's the sole highest-graded copy of the first appearance of the Silver Age Green Lantern! For whatever reason, this issue's very difficult to find even in FN or better, so we were wowed by this census-topper. Especially pleasing to the eye is that it's such a well-centered copy, as so many have part of the white back cover showing on the front and spoiling the fun. Not only does Hal Jordan make his debut here, the book also has the first appearances of Abin Sur (the alien who gives Hal his powers) and Carol Ferris (Hal's love interest and also his boss!). Gil Kane handled the cover and interior art. Overstreet 2006 VF/NM 9.0 value = $5,592; NM- 9.2 value = $8,000. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 9.0, none higher.

Fantastic Four #4 (Marvel, 1962) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
Here's a beautiful NM copy of one of the most significant issues of this title's long run, the first Silver Age appearance of the Sub-Mariner! Prince Namor, a star of the Timely comics of the 1940s, hadn't been seen in a comic at all since the mid-1950s, and Jack Kirby's panel sequence that shows the Human Torch "shaving" a derelict's beard to reveal the Sub-Mariner's face is one of the most memorable images of early Marvel comics. In issues to come, Sub-Mariner, now a quasi-villain, would star in many an epic Fantastic Four tale. This is indisputably one of the highlights of our Silver Age selection, and would be an upgrade to most any collector's FF run. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $5,800. CGC census 4/06: 6 in 9.4, 1 higher.

Four Color
run, in a beautiful bound volume similar to our previous lot. Included are #13 (Walt Disney's Reluctant Dragon), 14 (Moon Mullins -- first issue), 15 (Tillie the Toiler -- first issue), 16 (Mickey Mouse Outwits the Phantom Blot -- the first solo Mickey comic book), 17 (Walt Disney's Dumbo, the Flying Elephant), 18 (Jiggs and Maggie -- first issue), 19 (Barney Google and Snuffy Smith -- first issue, as well as first with
Four Color
on the cover), 20 (Tiny Tim), 21 (Dick Tracy), 22 (Don Winslow), 23 (Gang Busters), 24 (Captain Easy), and 25 (Popeye, featuring strip reprints by Segar). As before, these are incredible copies, with off-white, supple pages and glossy covers. The binding is very tight and clean, with no hint of any problems whatsoever. All comics appear to have been VF or better before being trimmed and bound. A simply outstanding bound volume, filled with incredible

treasures! Overstreet VG 4.0 value for group = $4,246.

The great

bound volumes keep coming with this collection of Series II comics. Included are: #1 (Little Joe), 2 (Harold Teen), 3 (Alley Oop -- first issue), 4 (Smilin' Jack), 5 (Raggedy Ann and Andy -- first issue), 6 (Smitty), 7 (Smokey Stover -- first issue), 8 (Tillie the Toiler), 9 (Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold -- featuring art by Carl Barks and Jack Hannah), 10 (Flash Gordon -- classic issue featuring Alex Raymond strip reprints), 11 (Wash Tubbs), and 12 (Walt Disney's Bambi -- first issue). Not too bad a line-up, hmm? All the comics appear to have been in VF or better before being trimmed and bound, and all sport remarkably supple interior pages. The outer binding is clean and tight -- a very solid book. Overstreet VG 4.0 value for group = $2,502.

Four Color #25-36 Bound Volume (Dell, 1943-44).
The fun continues with this third volume of
Four Color
(second series) issues, beautifully bound together in this hardcover book. Included: #25 (Andy Panda -- first issue), 26 (Popeye), 27 (Mickey Mouse and the Seven-Colored Terror -- this copy has a slight dust shadow on the front cover), 28 (Wash Tubbs), 29 (Donald Duck and the Mummy's Ring -- classic Carl Barks story and art), 30 (Bambi's Children), 31 (Moon Mullins), 32 (Smitty), 33 (Bugs Bunny Public Nuisance No. 1), 34 (Dick Tracy), 35 (Smokey Stover), and 36 (Smilin' Jack). The comics appear to have been VF or better before being trimmed and bound; other than the dust shadow on #27, all have retained their original cover freshness (most were printed on matte-finish paper) and supple interior page quality. The outside binding is tight and mostly scuff-free. Overstreet VG 4.0 value for group = $1,960.

Showcase #4 The Flash (DC, 1956) CGC VF- 7.5 Off-white to white pages.
The first Silver Age comic book according to many, this is the origin and first appearance of the new Flash, Barry Allen. A dynamite new costume, somewhat fancier powers, and the stylish art of Carmine Infantino were the combination that caught the fancy of comic readers and led to the revival of the superhero genre. The second most-valuable comic of the Silver Age, this is a must for anyone who collects that era! Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $13,500. CGC census 3/06: 4 in 7.5, 11 higher.

A great-looking copy of the first issue of the most-collected title in all of comics... what more can you ask for? This one's a Marvel must, thanks to the first appearances of John Jameson, J. Jonah Jameson, and the Chameleon. Steve Ditko drew the cover (over Jack Kirby layouts) as well as the story art. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $9,250. CGC census 3/06: 26 in 8.0, 38 higher.

Richie Rich #2 File Copy (Harvey, 1961) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages.
We present to you the one and only 9.6 that CGC has certified as of this writing for the second issue of this long-running series. The concept that there was a time when Richie only starred in one title is quite a mind-boggler; it wouldn't be long before the floodgates were opened for many, many others. Warren Kremer's charming cover shows that the winning formula was in place right from the start. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $1,100. CGC census 4/06: 1 in 9.6, none higher.

The real fun of collecting bound volumes is the fact that the comics inside can actually be read and enjoyed, as opposed to "look but don't touch" CGC-slabbed books. Here's another terrific volume of early 64-page
Four Color
issues, offered for your reading pleasure: #13 (Mr. District Attorney -- first issue), 14 (Smilin' Jack), 15 (Felix the Cat -- first issue, featuring art by Otto Messmer), 16 (Porky Pig and the Secret of the Haunted House -- first issue), 17 (Popeye and Wimpy), 18 (Little Orphan Annie's Junior Commandos -- flag cover), 19 (Walt Disney's Thumper meets the Seven Dwarfs), 20 (Barney Baxter), 21 (Oswald the Rabbit -- first issue), 22 (Tillie the Toiler), 23 (Raggedy Ann and Andy), and 24 (Gangbusters). All comics appear to have been VF or better before being trimmed and bound; all retain most of their original cover gloss and excellent supple page quality. Even the Watcher himself hasn't seen a higher-graded copy of this key issue, the first appearances of both the Silver Surfer and Galactus. And your
FF
run could hardly be without the best possible copy of this key. This book's standing in the minds of comic fandom could hardly be better -- witness the June
Comics Buyers Guide
, in which the magazine's readers voted it one of the three most memorable moments in comics. Jack Kirby handled the cover and interior art on this unforgettable issue. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $1,000. CGC census 3/06: 9 in 9.8, none higher.

Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #25-36 File Copies Bound Volume (Dell, 1943).
Carl Barks' first Donald Duck art of this series in issue #31 makes that book a major key issue for the Dell collector, and it's the highlight of this fantastic bound volume! Other highlights are #32 (the first Donald story written in its entirety by Barks) and #33 (a classic infinity cover). Meanwhile, #34 starts the Gremlins series with Walt Kelly art, and some of the issues prior to that in this book have Kelly art too. The trimmed and bound Western Publishing file copies in this brown hardcover volume are in beautiful, VF-type condition, with the cover gloss particularly impressive. The spine of the book is embossed with the title and issue numbers. See the work of the "good Duck artist" as it originally appeared! Overstreet VG 4.0 value for group = $2,074.

All-Flash #1-12 Bound Volume (DC, 1941-43).
We can't say for sure if this
All-Flash
volume originated from DC or perhaps another comic publisher, but it has all the earmarks! It has aged considerably, with many of the covers and interior pages beginning to tan along the edges, and the binding looks like the proper vintage. At any rate, these early adventures of DC's Fastest Man Alive are loads of fun to read! The books were not trimmed before binding, but fit well together -- in spite of the tanning, they are still quite readable. Consider this a rare chance to obtain the first twelve issues, all in a single bound volume. Overstreet VG 4.0 value for group = $5,904.

The Flash #123 (DC, 1961) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages.
We can't imagine a DC fan who wouldn't want this copy. It's one of the nicest copies yet certified of the classic "Flash of Two Worlds" issue, a true DC milestone. This book opened up a whole new world of possible storylines by revealing that there was another Earth where the Golden Age heroes were still alive and well (later dubbed Earth-Two). It was the first time that the original Flash, Jay Garrick, had appeared since the Golden Age, and he thrilled fans by meeting up with his Silver Age counterpart, Barry Allen. Carmine Infantino's cover is among the most famous of DC's Silver Age. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $2,400. CGC census 3/06: 2 in 9.2, 1 higher.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (Mirage Studios, 1984) CGC NM 9.4 White pages.
High-grade copies of this first printing are a four-figure item these days! This is the origin and first appearance of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Splinter, and Shredder, and it's a book that had a print run of only 3,000 copies. Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's independent comic was a smash hit that took everyone by surprise, so much so that just a year after publication Laird wrote, "The comic book we were afraid would sit around our living room in unsold boxes upon boxes is now being sold for approximately what a
Conan
#1 would go for." Well, guess what: some 20 years on, you could get about
four
Conan
#1s in the same grade for what this one is selling for. It's currently the most valuable post-1980 comic, and likely to stay that way for a while. Note that the 2006 Overstreet guide does not list a value for this first printing, simply stating, "Prices vary widely on this book." CGC census 4/06: 8 in 9.4, 5 higher. (Total: 1 Comic Book)

Showcase #4 The Flash (DC, 1956) CGC FN- 5.5 Off-white pages.
The Silver Age was born with this issue, the first appearance of the new Flash, Barry Allen. This series was a tryout title (the previous issues featured the forgettable likes of Kings of the Wild and the Frogmen), but the inclusion of a new superhero was remarkable since costumed adventurers were more or less "box-office poison" at the time. But the issue, drawn by Carmine Infantino, was a hit, and more and more superheroes were back in business thereafter. This book's significance means it will continue to command top dollar for many a year to come. Overstreet 2006 FN 6.0 value = $3,750. CGC census 3/06: 4 in 5.5, 21 higher.

Fantastic Four #3 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages.
This is the best copy of this issue we've ever offered! It's the issue in which the Fantastic Four became more of a traditional superhero team, donning costumes for the first time, establishing a headquarters, and coming up with their distinctive Fantasti-Car. Stan Lee's original idea for a team totally different than what had gone before involved their not wearing costumes at all, as an extension of the fact that they didn't bother with secret identities. Thank goodness he reconsidered, as the outfits and gadgets became an essential aspect of the group. All except for the Thing's costume, complete with mask, that lasted about three panels! Of course, those great visuals are courtesy of co-creator Jack Kirby. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $2,109; VF/NM 9.0 value = $3,705. CGC census 3/06: 8 in 8.5, 9 higher.

. The origin of the new character is retold here, and in the villain department there's the origin and first appearance of the Mirror Master. The cover and interior art are by Carmine Infantino. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $3,898. CGC census 3/06: 6 in 7.5, 7 higher.

. The concept of a newsstand with only one Richie comic for sale boggles the mind, since the character would become almost a publishing empire unto himself in years to come! And finding this book in high grade is quite a chore indeed, so don't miss this file copy. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $913; VF/NM 9.0 value = $1,534. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 8.5, 6 higher.

The Incredible Hulk #1 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VG+ 4.5 White pages.
The origin and first appearance of the Incredible Hulk shows the character with grey skin, which was changed to the now-familiar green just one issue later. Jack Kirby is the issue's artist, and he signed this copy on the first page (as per their usual practice, CGC merely notes the presence of the signature without commenting on its authenticity). CGC notes, "'To Mark/Jack Kirby' written on 1st page in pen." Overstreet 2006 VG 4.0 value = $1,450. CGC census 3/06: 18 in 4.5, 104 higher.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (Mirage Studios, 1984) CGC Qualified NM+ 9.6 White pages.
First printings like this one were already a high-demand item in the mid-80s, and anyone who thought that was a passing fad turned out to be dead wrong! In fact, this currently stands as the most valuable 1980s comic book. While the series that
TMNT
parodies, Frank Miller's
Ronin
, was hoarded in immense quantities upon publication, this under-the-radar independent comic was bought by only a select few (the print run was just 3,000). This is the origin and first appearance of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Splinter, and Shredder. Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird handled the story and art. Note that Overstreet does not list a value for the first printing. CGC notes, "3-inch tear on 8th and 9th page."

X-Men #94 (Marvel, 1975) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
Little did anyone know in 1975 what an impact this issue would have! Not only was it the regular-series debut of the new X-Men, their second appearance overall, but it was the moment when the new team formally replaced the old group, with Angel, Marvel Girl and Iceman resigning. And Sunfire, though a new guy, resigned too! Gil Kane drew the cover, and Dave Cockrum handled the interior art. For a relatively recent book, and considering that over 1,700 copies have been certified, not many rank higher in grade than this beauty! Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $1,060.
