The Flash #105 (DC, 1959) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
This is the sole highest-graded copy of this issue as of this writing, and there aren't even many close runners-up: only four copies have been graded above
VF
by CGC to date! And this is a key issue, the first issue featuring the Silver Age Flash in his own title (with numbering that continued where the Golden Age series had left off a decade earlier). This is one of the ten most valuable Silver Age comics according to Overstreet, and the only DCs from that era that top it are
Showcase
#4, 8, and 9. This debut issue is also notable for having the origin and first appearance of the Mirror Master, plus a retelling of the Flash's origin. Carmine Infantino provided both cover and interior art. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $9,300. CGC census 9/05: 1 in 9.4, none higher.

Justice League of America #1 (DC, 1960) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
This #1 issue is currently 13th in Overstreet's ranking of the most valuable Silver Age comics, and our offering is tied for the highest grade yet assigned! You'll notice that #1 doesn't appear on the cover anywhere -- this comic is from the time when a #1 was considered a negative, even for tried-and-true characters like the JLA, who had had a successful debut in the pages of
The Brave and The Bold
. Murphy Anderson's cover image is one of the more famous covers of the Silver Age, and the story is by the creative team that produced every early JLA appearance: writer Gardner Fox and artist Mike Sekowsky. The issue is also notable for having the first appearance of three-eyed villain Despero. With the JLA still appearing in comics and cartoons to this day, demand for this key book can only increase. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $8,000. CGC census 9/05: 2 in 9.4, one higher.

The Amazing Spider-Man #9 (Marvel, 1964) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
We get to see the best copies of this title month in and month out, but we had never gotten our hands on this issue in 9.6 condition before! It's the origin and first appearance of Electro, with a story by Stan Lee and cover and interior art by Steve Ditko. Note that the CGC slab has a two-inch crack at the top rear. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $2,025. CGC census 9/05: 6 in 9.6, none higher.

The Amazing Spider-Man #8 (Marvel, 1964) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
We give you Flash Thompson: football star, adored by the girls, Big Man On Campus. Didn'tcha
hate
him? The moment fans had waited eight issues for came in #8, as Peter Parker actually had a boxing match with the big bully (unfortunately, a robot attack interrupted matters). The art on the lead story is by Steve Ditko, who also drew the cover. The backup feature guest-stars the Fantastic Four, and offers an artistic team we really love: Ditko inking Jack Kirby! Surprisingly, Spidey shows amorous inclinations in the tale -- he tries to hit on the Human Torch's girlfriend Dorrie, and even makes a web-valentine for the Invisible Girl (who was still single at the time, we hasten to add). Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $1,900. CGC census 9/05: 7 in 9.6, 2 higher.

The Incredible Hulk #181 (Marvel, 1974) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages.
How nice is it to have a 9.6 of this key? Well, as of this writing, 2,502 copies of this issue have been certified by CGC, including three Apparent PRs and two Apparent FRs (oo-kay....), and of those 2,502, a mere seven have been certified with a higher grade than our offering! This issue, the first full appearance of Wolverine, is still the most valuable comic of the Bronze Age, and since its two nearest competitors,
Giant-Size X-Men
#1 and
X-Men
#94, actually took a slight
dip
in value with this year's Guide, we would say Hulk #181 is in no danger of losing its top-of-the-heap status. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $1,300. CGC census 9/05: 100 in 9.6, 7 higher.

Tomb of Dracula #10 (Marvel, 1973) CGC MT 9.9 White pages.
Here's the only 9.9 yet certified of this key Bronze Age book, the first appearance of Blade, Vampire Slayer. It's a comic that soared in demand once Blade became the star of a movie, in fact he has now surpassed all other Marvel characters, being the first to star in
three
motion pictures! The story is by the character's creator Marv Wolfman, and the moody art is by the always excellent Gene Colan. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $175. CGC census 9/05: 1 in 9.9, none higher.

Canada's Wolverine, Germany's Nightcrawler, the U.S.S.R.'s Colossus, and Africa's Storm (she's from Kenya or Tanzania depending on which account you read) joined with American Indian Thunderbird to form the new X-Men in this issue, which occupies the #2 spot in Overstreet's ranking of the most valuable Bronze Age comic books. Dave Cockrum drew that first story as well as inking Gil Kane's cover pencils. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $1,100. CGC census 9/05: 100 in 9.6, 10 higher.

Batman #232 (DC, 1971) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages.
DC comics in the seventies just did not get any better than the milestone "Daughter of the Demon." A brand-new villain debuted -- and what an adversary Ra's al Ghul turned out to be. Not another super-powered goon, Ra's just had that certain evil presence that said he was not a man you'd want to mess with -- Neal Adams' art certainly saw to that. Add to that some genuinely surprising twists courtesy of Denny O'Neil's plot, and extra eye candy in the form of Dick Giordano's inks (did anyone embellish Adams better?). It all adds up to a Bronze Age classic. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $185. CGC census 9/05: 4 in 9.8, none higher.

Here's a big one for you, boys and girls -- the first Silver Age appearance of Captain America, who joins the Avengers in this issue. Sub-Mariner makes an important appearance -- he's the one who tosses the big chunk of ice containing Cap into the water, where Cap's frozen body eventually gets rescued and revived by the Avengers. Jack Kirby drew the historic cover and story art, as well he should have; after all, "King" Kirby was, along with Joe Simon, the co-creator of the character! Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $2,500. And what comic fan wouldn't treasure a 9.6 copy of this issue, especially considering it's a square bound issue with a white cover? Tomb of Dracula #1 (Marvel, 1972) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages.
This issue marked the first appearance of Marvel's Dracula, and if you're wondering why it took so long, blame the Comics Code, which at one time had a restriction forbidding vampires in comics. Also making his first appearance was Drac's descendant (and enemy), Frank Drake. This series has become quite a collector's favorite, in large part because of the moody art of Gene Colan, who drew the series' entire run.
