Special Edition Comics #1 Allentown pedigree (Fawcett, 1940) CGC NM/MT 9.8 Off-white pages.
We can hardly conceive of a more desirable copy of a Fawcett comic book than this one; it's a perfect copy of an issue with one of the best-known covers of the Golden Age. This is the first comic book entirely devoted to Captain Marvel, and one of the earliest appearances of the hero -- at the time this was published, Captain Marvel had starred in just a handful of issues of
Whiz Comics
, with this one-shot appearing at the same time as
Whiz
#8. Since
Whiz
had multiple recurring features, Fawcett was eager to find out whether Captain Marvel could carry a comic book of his own, and used this one-shot as a tryout. We needn't tell you whether the experiment was successful, as
Captain Marvel Adventures
debuted soon thereafter and became the bestselling title in all of comics! The cover art has been credited to C. C. Beck, and it's an image known to every comic book fan. The clean, appealing style of Beck also graces the interior of this 64-page issue, which has the Big Red Cheese in a number of adventures, including a confrontation with his archfoe Sivana. This unbelievable copy is from the Allentown collection, which, though not a large hoard, is known for producing the best known copy of several key comics. That's certainly the case with this gem. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $13,000. CGC census 7/05: 1 in 9.8, none higher.

Brenda Starr #14 (#2) Mile High pedigree (Four Star, 1948) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
Is it hot in here, or is it just us? Actually, it's just Jack Kamen, who delivered one of the most memorable "good girl" covers of all with this issue. The book
Comics: Between the Panels
named this one of the top ten "headlight" covers in all of comics. And while we're discussing genres, any collector of bondage covers would be hard-pressed to pass this one up as well! This stunning copy has intense colors with a near-perfect spine, secure staples (no stress at all) and exact centering. It's a textbook example of why comics from this legendary collection are so highly desired. Just three copies of the issue have garnered VF 8.0 or better from CGC to date, with this offering easily the highest-graded. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $1,100. CGC census 6/05: 1 in 9.4, none higher.

Military Comics #1 Rockford pedigree (Quality, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages.
This key Golden Age book introduced one of comics' most enduring characters, Blackhawk. Will Eisner provided the cover, while interior artists included Chuck Cuidera, Fred Guardineer, Jack Cole, Bob Powell, and Klaus Nordling. This currently ranks as the second highest-graded copy to be certified by CGC to date. Overstreet 2005 VF/NM 9.0 value = $10,523; NM- 9.2 value = $14,500. CGC census 7/05: 1 in 9.0, 1 higher.

Daredevil Comics #1 Daredevil Battles Hitler - Rockford pedigree (Lev Gleason, 1941) CGC VF+ 8.5 Cream to off-white pages.
This has got to be one of the most memorable covers of the Golden Age, with the icing on the cake being Bob Wood and Charles Biro's retouching of the Phew-rer's face into a silly expression. Inside the comic, Daredevil also has to battle the meanest
fictional
villain Lev Gleason had to offer, namely the Claw. And there's even the "origin" of Hitler, believe it or not. Overstreet 2005 VF 8.0 value = $8,820; VF/NM 9.0 value = $14,410. CGC census 6/05: 2 in 8.5, 4 higher.

Air Fighters Comics #3 Mile High pedigree (Hillman Fall, 1942) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
This issue featured the origin and first appearance of the creature Jim Steranko called "one of the most fantastic and original characters ever created in the history of comics." We're talking about the Heap, the swamp monster who was presumably meant to be a one-issue character but whose popularity soon eclipsed that of Skywolf, in whose feature the Heap debuted. And of course, the Heap would inspire later, similar creatures like DC's Swamp Thing and Marvel's Man-Thing. The book is also notable for having only the second appearances of both Skywolf and Airboy. The cover is by Charles Biro. This copy has those super-fresh Mile High colors, and even the pristine white back cover is nice to look at. The book is by far the highest-graded in CGC's census, with the runner-up quite far behind at 8.0. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $2,400. CGC census 7/05: 1 in 9.6, none higher.

Captain Marvel Adventures #21 Mile High pedigree (Fawcett, 1943) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages.
Hootin' Zoots! This incredible gem copy is almost too good to be true! Great cover illustration by C. C. Beck, featuring Hitler and two of his mindless minions being exposed to Captain Marvel's "Honesty Ray," but the real story is how this 62+ year-old comic book survived in such perfect condition! We find it difficult to believe old Edgar Church ever opened this one up even once -- the spine is impossibly smooth and stress-free! Wow! Even the small penciled "D" arrival marks alongside the top of the book can't detract from this brilliant beauty! Better wear sunglasses when looking at this one! Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $1,175. CGC census 7/05: 1 in 9.8, none higher.

Science Comics #3 Larson pedigree (Fox, 1940) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
This early Fox has a lot going for it - most importantly the Near Mint grade, the famous Larson pedigree, and the eye-catching Lou Fine cover, deemed a "classic" by Overstreet. This is the finest copy CGC has certified to date; no other copy has earned higher than FN/VF 7.0. George Tuska, Dick Briefer, and Bert Whitman crafted interior art. Master Comics #30 San Francisco pedigree (Fawcett, 1942) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages.
Here is a worthy representative of the famed pedigree that many consider second only to Edgar Church's Mile High pedigree for preserving immaculate copies of Golden Age comic books. CGC's census shows that only two copies of #30 have earned grades higher than VF 8.0, and this amazing specimen is the highest-graded of all, and with white pages as a bonus! Mac Raboy's flag cover and interior art, plus the battle between Captain Marvel Jr. and Captain Nazi make this a highly collectible issue no matter what the condition, but in NM+? Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $1,125. CGC census 6/05: 1 in 9.6, none higher.

Whiz Comics
with this issue, setting up shop as
Master
's headliner for the next decade. Raboy's classy, distinctive art makes many Fawcett Golden Age books very desirable to collectors, and this copy is one of the highest-graded that CGC has certified of issue #22. Startling Comics #49 (Better Publications, 1948) CGC VF+ 8.5 Cream to off-white pages.
To put it mildly, we're big fans of this cover by Alex Schomburg (as "Xela"). We used it for the cover of our last catalog, and a new book about Schomburg put it on the cover as well, that's because it's one of his best! The beautiful girl in bondage, the meanie robot, the hero with a ray gun... what more could you ask for? The book also has a Fighting Yank yarn. Note that the CGC slab has a one-inch crack at the top left, not affecting the integrity of the holder. Overstreet 2005 VF 8.0 value = $2,418; VF/NM 9.0 value = $3,909. Amazing-Man Comics #8 Mile High pedigree (Centaur, 1939) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages.
Comic books from Centaur Publications continue to command great interest among Golden Age collectors, and this fine specimen shows you why. The most renowned of all pedigrees provides this stunning copy, the only copy of #8 to be certified by CGC as of this writing. It's doubtful there's a nicer specimen in existence of this issue that Gerber rates "uncommon." Bill Everett provided the cover art here, and some interior art as well, barely one month after he introduced his most famous character, the Sub-Mariner, in
Marvel Comics
#1. There's also art by Carl Burgos and Lew Glanzman. Overstreet notes that Cat-Man dresses as a woman in the issue... make of that what you will! Overstreet 2005 VF/NM 9.0 value = $1,703; NM- 9.2 value = $2,300. CGC census 6/05: 1 in 9.0, none higher.

We've never had the opportunity to offer this comic before, and boy, were we missing out! So the least we can do is make up for it by presenting this stunning pedigree copy. The unusual purple background is as unforgiving as a black cover would be when it comes to making flaws stand out, so we doubt there's a copy in existence that's better than this census-topper. And of course, we love any cover that has Hitler getting his comeuppance for ruining the 20th century with his master-race schemes. See if your moustache cushions that face-down landing, "phew"-rer! The cover's the work of Alex Kotzky. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $575. CGC census 7/05: 1 in 9.6, none higher.

This is one of those beautiful copies that you'd know was a Mile High even if the slab didn't say so. Uncle Sam and Buddy are featured on the cover, which is by Al Gabriele. This issue also has the first appearance of the Unknown, about whom Jim Steranko memorably wrote, "he was a hero without a name, without a country and without a shirt." Brenda Starr V2#10 Mile High pedigree (Four Star, 1949) CGC NM/MT 9.8 Off-white to white pages.
We feel very confident in calling this the best existing copy of this issue. The series features a true comic strip icon, Brenda Starr; it's curious that such a mainstay of the funny pages hasn't starred in very many comic books. Fewer still have been original stories as opposed to strip reprints. Fortunately, this issue does feature original material. The cover blurb may advertise "romantic adventures for teenagers," but the cover has enough of a "good girl" element to keep grown-ups like us interested. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $850. All-Winners Comics
#1, a key Timely! What the heck's it doing in there, you ask? Well, no two copies of
Double Comics
are the same -- not only did the issues for each year have several different covers, you never knew which remaindered comics would be re-bound on the inside, or even which publisher they'd be from! Any kids who bought this mag hoping to read all about the cover hero called the Green Light instead found the aforementioned
All-Winners
, plus Quality's
National Comics
#14. A word on the
All-Winners
: it's got a Captain America story by Simon and Kirby, plus Human Torch and Sub-Mariner features and a text feature with the first appearance of the All-Winners Squad. Of course, the
National
issue is a less acclaimed book, but it does have art by the great Lou Fine. And of course, we should mention that this is a square bound 128-pager, making a VF copy quite a pleasant surprise. Note that a small plastic stabilizing peg is loose inside the CGC holder, not affecting the integrity of the holder or the comic itself. Overstreet lists a 2005 VF 8.0 value of $988 for this
Double Comics
issue but notes, "Any containing rare origin or first issues are worth much more... value would be approximately 50 percent of contents." The two comics mentioned above would therefore give this copy an approximate Overstreet value of $7,500. CGC census 7/05: 2 in 8.0, 1 higher.

Military Comics #17 Mile High pedigree (Quality, 1943) CGC NM 9.4 White pages.
While Will Eisner's name doesn't appear in this issue's credits, his stamp is all over the comic. For one, it stars the Blackhawk team he created; for another, this cover, credited to Reed Crandall, shows the group's name integrated into the art in a very Eisner-esque fashion. And Eisner's old strip "Private Dogtag" even appears among the backup features. Also of note is that the "P.T. Boat" feature started with this issue. This is the only copy of the comic that's been certified with a grade above 6.0 as of this writing. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $975. CGC census 6/05: 1 in 9.4, none higher.

Billed as "America's Bravest Defender," our hero proves his worth with this incredible Alex Schomburg World War II cover, depicting Japanese emperor Hirohito "in bondage" at his own throne! Wotta man! This is another fantastic Big Apple copy, featuring fresh white pages; it's been bested by only one other in the current CGC census for this issue. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $800. Startling Comics #41 Mile High pedigree (Better Publications, 1946) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages.
Talk about startling! Bursting through the pages of a newspaper comes a glowing Pyroman, clutching a -- gasp! -- atom bomb! Watch those sparks! From the Mile High collection of Edgar Church comes yet another like-new yet decades-old comic book. CGC has certified just four unrestored copies of this issue #41, only two of which managed grades above VF- 7.5. The great Alex Schomburg offered the clever cover to coax a dime from the 1940s-era comic buyer, and Front Page Peggy begins in this issue. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $535. CGC census 6/05: 1 in 9.6, 1 higher.

Overstreet gave its "classic" designation to this painstakingly detailed Lou Fine cover. This hybrid patriotic/underwater/war/science fiction cover scene features Uncle Sam and Buddy, and Fine's mastery of perspective is on display in clear detail. Other features in this issue are the speedy Quicksilver, Merlin the Magician, and the Kid Patrol. Interior artists include Nick Cardy, Klaus Nordling, John Celardo, and George Tuska. Overstreet 2005 FN 6.0 value = $693; VF 8.0 value = $1,444. CGC census 7/05: 1 in 7.0, 2 higher.
