Showcase #4 The Flash (DC, 1956) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white pages.
This is the first comic of the Silver Age according to many, and one of the most significant comic books ever published, no matter whom you ask! It's the first appearance of the Silver Age Flash, Barry Allen, published in the mid-1950s when the comic book industry was at a low point and there seemed to be next to no demand for existing superheroes, never mind new ones. But DC decided to bring one Golden Age hero back in revamped form for a tryout issue, with a new identity, costume, and origin. The experiment was a success, and Barry got his own title after a couple more
Showcase
appearances. The story, written by Bob Kanigher and drawn by Carmine Infantino and Joe Kubert, also featured the first appearance of Barry's girlfriend Iris West. It's the second most-valuable Silver Age comic according to Overstreet, and only a handful of copies have been graded higher, making this copy an attractive investment indeed. Overstreet 2005 VF 8.0 value = $13,200. CGC census 5/05: 6 in 8.0, 4 higher.

Richie Rich #1 File Copy (Harvey, 1960) CGC NM- 9.2 Cream to off-white pages.
Harvey had quite a lineup of funny books in the late 1950s and early 1960s: Casper, Little Dot, Little Audrey, Wendy, Spooky, Hot Stuff, Little Lotta, Baby Huey, and Sad Sack to name several. But Richie Rich, who first appeared in
Little Dot
, became the most popular of all. If we're not mistaken, he appeared in another series or two over the years... Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $2,850. CGC census 7/05: 2 in 9.2, 3 higher.

Playboy #1 (HMH Publishing, 1953) Condition: VG.
The premiere issue of the magazine that would revolutionize the men's magazine genre was audacious from the start. Marilyn Monroe graced the cover, and, of course, was the first Playmate of the Month (Sweetheart of the Month in the first issue), her full page nude ingrained in Americana lore. Hugh Hefner had a vision beyond titillation - he brought fiction from outstanding authors of the 20th century (Sir Arthur Conan in the first issue; in later issues Ray Bradbury, Ian Fleming, Herbert Gold, W. Somerset Maugham, and Jack Kerouac, to name a few); interviews with celebrities of the day; contributions from top cartoonists, many of which stayed with the publication for decades; and timely features on sports, food, music, automobiles, travel, relationships, and other diversions. His wide-ranging "Entertainment for Men" wasn't an overnight success, but by the early 1960s,
Playboy
was nestled firmly atop the crowded men's magazine scene and one of the best-selling magazines in the country in any genre. The first issue of
Playboy
had a limited print run was only about 50,000, and complete copies in nice condition have become highly sought-after. This copy has some water stains, mostly at the right bottom, as well as overall edgewear to keep the grade at Very Good. The Marilyn page has no visible water staining, but close examination reveals very slight wrinkling from moisture at the right bottom corner, almost indiscernible unless one is looking for it. The white border around her image shows some tanning from age. This copy remains a solid mid-grade copy, perfectly suitable for collecting or for a "reading" copy to back up a high-grade specimen.

Swamp Thing #1 (DC, 1972) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages.
In a way, this is the true first appearance of Swamp Thing, since the character who had appeared in
House of Secrets
#92 had a different name (Alex Olsen then, Alec Holland here) and a different origin story (19th century then, 20th century here). Not only does this issue introduce Alex and the new origin, it's the first appearance of supporting character Matt Cable, who would become a villain in years to come and even go on to appear in Neil Gaiman's
Sandman
series. The issue is by the character's co-creators, writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $180. CGC census 5/05: 2 in 9.8, none higher.

Mad
magazine that became a best-selling cultural phenomenon that endures to this very day. And here is an absolutely phenomenal copy of the first magazine-sized issue of

Marc Davis - Tinkerbell Bronze Sculpture, 128/177 (Walt Disney, 1998).
This little sprite is about as cute as they come! Tinkerbell is portrayed exactly as the late Marc Davis drew her for her first Disney animation model sheet. She is depicted on this bronze figurine as you would find her on a walk through an enchanted forest. She's here in all her glory, with her gilded wings, shimmering gold hair, shining skin, and pouty sideways glance! She stands on a bronze leaf with mushrooms at her feet. Marc Davis is best known as one of the original "Nine Old Men," Walt's hand-picked animation board of directors, selected after Disney's first feature-length animated classic, "Snow White." In addition to Tinkerbell, Davis created such characters as Sleeping Beauty and Cruella DeVil. Chosen by Davis as sculptor was Michael McCraken, known for his work at Disney Imagineering. This bronze figurine was produced for the "1998 Disney World Celebration" of Marc Davis' birthday, held at the Brown Derby Restaurant in the Disney MGM Theme Park. It was limited to 177 pieces, which sold out at $1,850 each. These have sold on the secondary market at twice that amount. This 11.5" tall piece has been signed by Marc Davis on a plaque on the base. The figurine is in Excellent condition.

Astounding Stories Jan 1930 (V1#1) (Street & Smith, 1930) Condition: VG+.
The landmark first issue of this long-running science fiction title! An army of giant alien beetles attacks on this cover painted by Hans Wessolowski. The inside covers are white, the pages are an even, supple light tan. There is about a quarter-inch of paper loss at the top and bottom of the spine, and there are a few spots of glue reinforcing the bottom left corner. There is also some very minor flaking at the lower right corner, and a small piece missing from the back cover at the lower left corner. Despite these minor defects, this remains a very nice copy of a highly desirable issue. The Ultimate Guide to the Pulps VG value = $600.

Doc Savage July 1934 (V3#5) (Street & Smith, 1934) Condition: FN.
The painted cover art by Walter Baumhofer has a classic feel. This pulp includes the tale "The Thousand-Headed Man" by Lester Dent, and has a full, unfaded, spine. The untrimmed cover overhang has almost no wear and very few tears. The only defect to note is some minor abrasion at the edge of the spine near the lower staple. Cover stock is white; pages are off-white to white (or as close to white as this pulp stock ever was!). The Ultimate Guide to the Pulps VG value = $100.
