The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages.
Now that
The Amazing Spider-Man
is the most collected series in comics, there's not a collector out there who doesn't wish he had snapped up a copy of the first issue when it originally hit newsstands. Well, this copy is so fresh, it looks like it was whisked here by time machine from 1963! In fact, only one copy of the issue has been graded higher to date. While Spider-Man did have one previous appearance in
Amazing Fantasy
#15, this second Spidey appearance has more than enough firsts. Take the first appearance of J. Jonah Jameson, a key member of Spidey's supporting cast who's been a memorable player in the movies as well. And there's the debut of his son John Jameson, who also appeared in "Spider-Man 2." And the issue's second feature has the first appearance of the Chameleon and also marked the first time the Fantastic Four appeared outside of their own series. That second story is a perfect example of the Marvel approach -- Spider-Man tries to join the Fantastic Four and makes it clear that he's worthy of a top salary, only to find out to his disgust that the FF are non-profit do-gooders! The issue is by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, while the dynamic cover was laid out by Jack Kirby and finished up by Ditko. We see no signs that Spider-Man's popularity is going to wane anytime soon, making this a book you can't go wrong with. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $32,500. CGC census 7/05: 3 in 9.6, 1 higher.

X-Men #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages.
The X-Men are the most popular superhero group around, and here's one of the nicest copies you'll find of the group's first appearance. The X-Men were so named because of their "X-tra power," and this issue introduces the super-powered teens: there's the winged Angel, the ultra-agile Beast, the eye-beam-shooting Cyclops (who in a typical Stan Lee twist, didn't want his powers), frosty Iceman, and the telekinetic Marvel Girl. Also making their debuts here were the group's mind-reading mentor Professor X and the mutants' most important foe, Magneto, all with impressive visuals by Jack Kirby. The fact that Iceman's role in the movies seems to be expanding, and that the second film even offered a very brief glimpse of the Beast, could make the first appearances of these characters even more valuable in years to come. As it stands, this issue is on Overstreet's list of the top ten Silver Age books. An unrestored NM- copy of this key book is quite a catch indeed. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $13,000. CGC census 6/05: 12 in 9.2, 6 higher.

The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC VF 8.0 Cream to off-white pages.
The club of
Amazing Spider-Man
collectors grows by the day, and to be taken seriously in that elite group you need a nice copy of #1. If your copy has Spidey battling spine splits and rust migration, get serious, get rid of it, and put in a serious bid on a nice VF copy like this one! This book's the second appearance of Spidey and the first appearance of J. Jonah Jameson, John Jameson, and the Chameleon. There's also a Fantastic Four appearance. The issue has a Stan Lee story and Steve Ditko art. Overstreet 2005 VF 8.0 value = $8,750. CGC census 7/05: 24 in 8.0, 37 higher.

Marge Buell - The First Little Lulu Panel Page Original Art, dated 2-23-35 (Saturday Evening Post, 1935).
Imagine the high-voltage thrill that comes with owning the art for the very
first
appearance of a cartoon super-star and American icon -- for an art collector or pop culture enthusiast, there's no finer feeling! Marge's
Little Lulu
must be counted among the most beloved kid features of all time, easily at home in the pantheon of such comic strip legends as
The Katzenjammer Kids
,
Little Orphan Annie
,
Henry
, and
Peanuts
. For legions of Baby Boomer comic book readers,
Marge's Little Lulu
served as a lighthearted respite from the gritty, hard-hitting yarns featuring Batman, Superman, and their ilk. Girls and boys, kids and adults -- everyone loves Little Lulu -- and here is Marge's first, landmark
Little Lulu
strip! When the
Saturday Evening Post
editors asked Marjorie (Henderson) Buell to develop a replacement feature for Carl Anderson's departing
Henry
strip, Marge scored a direct hit on the public's funnybone with her gags spotlighting a little girl with a corkscrew curl hairdo and a dickens of a personality. While the chrome-domed kid, Henry, had no hair at all, Little Lulu was blessed with oodles of naturally curly hair, a clever symbol of her irrepressible humor. Marge had been drawing cartoons for the
Post
for over nine years, and from Lulu Moppet's banana peel-dropping debut, readers knew this little prankster was indeed one lulu of a gal! From this impish origin, Marge parlayed Little Lulu's career into that of a major cartoon creation. Little Lulu has appeared on Broadway, starred in over twenty Paramount cartoon films, and even served as the spokeskid for Kleenex facial tissues. This wonderful drawing --
the historic cartoon that started it all
-- has an image area of 6.5" x 7", and is in Excellent condition. Don't miss out on an opportunity to

The Amazing Spider-Man #5 (Marvel, 1963) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
This book's white cover, its significance and of course its grade make it an attractive buy for the Silver Age Marvel collector. It's the first appearance of Doctor Doom outside of
The Fantastic Four
(the FF makes a brief cameo in the issue). In the story, Doom wants Spider-Man to help him battle the FF, but by the end of the issue he's accidentally corralled Flash Thompson, who's hamming it up in a Spidey costume! The cover and interior art are by Steve Ditko. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $3,200. CGC census 4/05: 7 in 9.4, 5 higher.

This series was the second Silver Age Marvel superhero title, and this first issue remains one of the toughest Silver Age Marvels to find in high grade. It's one of the five most valuable Silver Age comics according to Overstreet. Featured is the Hulk's origin and first appearance, with cover and interior art by Jack Kirby. The story also has the first appearances of supporting characters Rick Jones, Betty Ross, and "Thunderbolt" Ross. Overstreet 2005 VF 8.0 value = $7,700. CGC census 6/05: 7 in 7.5, 18 higher.

The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC FN/VF 7.0 Off-white to white pages.
Here's the first issue of what has become the most collected series in comics. Notable first appearances include J. Jonah Jameson, his astronaut son John Jameson (the future Man-Wolf, we might add), and this issue's villain, the Chameleon. Also of note is the Fantastic Four's first appearance outside of their own title -- Spidey tries to join the group but the pay (namely zero) isn't to his liking. There's also a retelling of the Webslinger's origin for everyone who missed

The movie "Spider-Man 2" certainly cemented the key status of this issue, the first appearance and origin of Doctor Octopus. This story, the first book-length tale in the series, has an appearance by the Human Torch. The ish also has one of Marvel's most famous mistakes, as Doc Ock says "And now,
Super-Man
, I grow bored with this game!" The cover and interior art are by Steve Ditko. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $4,700. CGC census 6/05: 10 in 9.2, 8 higher.

Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) CGC FN- 5.5 Off-white pages.
It doesn't get much better than this for Silver Age fans -- the very first appearance of Ol' Webhead himself! And not only Spider-Man, but Aunt May and Uncle Ben make their debut as well! It should go without saying that this was a creation of writer Stan Lee, and artists Jack Kirby (who drew the cover) and Steve Ditko (who handled the story art). We will say that this is a respectable mid-grade copy, with some "Marvel-chipping" to the right edge being the only real distraction; the blades must have been a little dull that day! Still, no Spider-Man collection can be considered complete without this landmark comic book. CGC notes: "From the collection of Joe and Nadia Mannarino." Overstreet 2005 FN 6.0 value = $4,200. Fantastic Four #1-24 Bound Volume (Marvel, 1961).
This remarkable bound volume not only contains an impressive run of early Marvel Silver Age goodness, but all of these first 24 issues of the
Fantastic Four
were
not trimmed
during the binding process! That means that these issues could conceivably be unbound by a competent restoration expert, and the individual issues might stand on their own as the Very Good to Fine issues they appear to be - although we don't recommend this practice, as the bound volume format is convenient, easy to handle, and very nice-looking on a collector's bookshelf. This volume includes an original numbered tag that records it as being bound by "Dobbs Bros. Library Binding Co. of St. Augustine, Florida." Overstreet 2005 VG 4.0 value for group = $6,630.

Super Comics #1-48 Bound Volumes (Dell, 1938-42).
There's a whole lot of comic history wrapped up within these four bound volumes.
Super Comics
was one of Dell's earliest series, specializing in reprinted newspaper strips like
Dick Tracy
,
Smokey Stover
,
Little Orphan Annie
, and others. In time, original features like "Magic Morro" were added. Each volume contains twelve 64-page issues, making each book quite a hefty tome. All comics were Western Publishing file copies that were bound and trimmed for office use. Due to the advanced age of these books, a few problems need to be noted: Vol. 1 has had the entire block of comics separate from the binding, which has split in two, leaving the back cover loose. The back cover of issue #12 was neatly pulled loose from the rest of the comic, and is joined to this back piece; also, a wear spot has developed on the spine cover. Vol. 2 is fully intact, but beginning to split along the seams, and the cover shows some wear. Volumes three and four are a little ragged at the top spine area, but not bad. All comics are in nice condition, with no major problems. Approximate Overstreet value for group = $1000. (Total: 4 items)

Giant-Size X-Men #1 (Marvel, 1975) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages.
The impact of this issue was really remarkable, considering that the original X-Men lineup had met with reader disinterest for years.
X-Men
had been reduced to reprint stories for some 27 issues prior to this key Bronze Age comic book. But good things started happening to the group with this issue and the introduction of newcomers including Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Thunderbird, and Wolverine. This is a terrific copy of the groundbreaking issue. CGC has certified nearly 2,000 copies of
Giant-Size X-Men
#1 to date, and only eight copies have earned a higher grade. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $1,100. CGC census 6/05: 98 in 9.6, 8 higher.

The Watcher has seen it all... literally. So when even he's as flabbergasted as on this Jack Kirby cover, something epic must be going on, and so it is in this, the first installment of what fans dubbed the "Galactus Trilogy." Both the Silver Surfer and Galactus made their first appearances in the issue, which is by the team of Kirby and writer Stan Lee. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $1,000. First issue copies of
Spider-Man
come through our doors quite often, in all grades. This CGC-certifed Very Good issue looks pretty darn sweet for its grade -- outside of some spine and back-cover wear, it's flat and clean, with good cover color and nice page quality. Spidey's origin is retold here, and the Fantastic Four make their first of many crossover appearances. Also debuting: John Jameson, J. Jonah Jameson, and the Chameleon. Steve Ditko cover (Jack Kirby layout) and art, of course. Overstreet 2005 VG 4.0 value = $1,750. CGC census 7/05: 67 in 4.0, 290 higher.

The Amazing Spider-Man #39 (Marvel, 1966) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
This issue is, depending on your personal tastes and level of "fanboy" geekiness, either ground zero to Spidey's rebirth (if you prefer jazzy John Romita Sr.'s classy rendering), or the beginning of the end (if you're a true-blue Steve Ditko fan). At any rate, here's a sharp copy of this issue, featuring a Green Goblin cover story in which the Goblin's identity is revealed as (gasp!) Norman Osborn. John Romita Sr. art begins. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies Comics #2 File Copy (Dell, 1941) CGC FN 6.0 Cream to off-white pages.
Back for a second time is the fantastic Warner Brothers crew of cartoon characters, including Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, and Elmer Fudd, the derby-wearing human star among all the Funny Animals. An interesting sidenote is the "L & M Comics" logo found on the upper right corner of the book: could this have been considered as a publisher's name, or was it just a stopgap until Dell produced a suitable logo for all its titles? We may never know, but we do know that this popular title went on to have a very long and healthy run! This copy is sound and attractive, even with the large "Return to Editorial Department" rubber stamp on the front. Overstreet 2005 FN 6.0 value = $426. CGC census 7/05: 1 in 6.0, none higher.

Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #13-24 Bound Volume (Dell, 1941-42).
This is Volume II of
Walt Disney's Comics and Stories
, containing the second batch of twelve sixty-four page issues. While this group comes in just a bit before the run of classic Carl Barks issues which began with #31, this is still a wonderful, historic volume filled with great early Disney art. All comics are Western Publishing file copies that were bound and trimmed into a hardcover book for office use. The comics in this volume have been perused at length, but are still in excellent condition, with glossy, richly colored covers, and supple interior pages. The binding is clean and sharp. A few text pieces have penciled notes concerning reprints; one page was raggedly trimmed, and then backed up with clear tape (which has yellowed slightly); and the first front cover and last back cover in the book are starting to separate from the rest of the block of comics, but overall, this is a sound and very attractive book. Overstreet 2005 VG 4.0 value for group = $1,474.

Daredevil #168 (Marvel, 1981) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages.
This issue might become one of the most valuable comics of the 1980s before all is said and done. It's the origin and first appearance of Elektra. It's also the issue in which Frank Miller, who had been drawing this title for a year, took over as scripter as well. With the character having surpassed Daredevil by appearing in
two
movies (DD's and her own), look for interest in this book to rise. This is the highest grade CGC has given yet for this issue. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $110. CGC census 6/05: 6 in 9.8, none higher.
