Four Color (Series One) #1 Dick Tracy - Mile High pedigree (Dell, 1939) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages.
None of the books from
Four Color
's brief Series One crop up very often, and one of the hardest to find is this first issue, which is termed "scarce" by Gerber. Of course, Dick Tracy and his creator Chester Gould need no introduction! It appears that this pedigree book was only kept from NM territory because of some yellowing on the back cover; the front cover is certainly up to the usual high Edgar Church standard. Only one copy of this issue has been certified with a higher grade by CGC to date. Overstreet 2004 VF 8.0 value = $4,396; VF/NM 9.0 value = $6,748.

Walt Disney Studios -- "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Original Hand Painted Production Cel and Courvoisier Background. (1937).
The Wicked Witch begins her journey to find Snow White in this dramatic scene with a fine Courvoisier hand painted background. The Witch appears only at the end of the film, and original cels of this evil villainess are highly sought after. Sitting on the seat of the small boat is the famous basket with five green apples and one poisoned red one! This multiple level cel consists of the Witch and basket which are trimmed and mounted to a cel of the boat. There is an overlay painting of the swamp plants to the left and water effects to the right of the boat. The fine scene has amazing detail and composition. The boat has an area of paint missing from the bow and a few small paint separations on the side below the basket. The Witch has a chip of paint missing from her right hand. Very good condition overall and a fine rare set up. The Witch and boat measure 6.5" x 5.25" and the background is 10.5" x 7.25." .

Walt Disney Studios -- "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Original Hand Painted Production Cel and Courvoisier Background. (1937).
To begin the transformation to the old hag, the Wicked Queen consults her book of spells! This magnificent set up includes the book and Queen on cel, the bookstand hand painted on an overlay, and the stone walls of her dungeon on the background. A very fine pose from an exceptionally rare sequence. This part of the film was so frightening to 1930s children that New York City's Radio City Music Hall had to replace all 6000 seat cushions in the auditorium after the film completed its run. So many children "lost control" that the velvet seat material was ruined! The Queen is 4.75" x 9.0" and the background shown is 11.0" x 10.5." This original set up captures the beauty and cruelty of the Queen in a most impressive scene. Excellent condition from a scene rarely found. Here's your chance to own a real villainess!

Al Taliaferro - Silly Symphony - Donald Duck Sunday Comic Strip Original Art, dated 2-21-37 (King Features Syndicate, 1937).
Jerry Weist's
Comic Art Price Guide
notes that
Silly Symphony
Sundays featuring Donald Duck are extremely rare; less than ten are known to exist from the 1936-37 era. Wow! If that wasn't incentive enough to bid, this just happens to be a top-notch example of Donald Duck's funny paper antics. It's a riot! Donald was created in 1934 as a character for a "Silly Symphony" animated short. His popularity brought him to the
Silly Symphony
Sunday comic strip on various occasions, from 1936 to 1937. Finally, in 1939, the
Donald Duck
strip debuted under its own title. The image area of this Sunday is approximately 27" x 17", and the art is in Excellent condition. Bid, Bid, Bid, on this super-scarce and superb Sunday!

Walt Disney Studios -- "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Original Hand Painted Production Cel with Hand Painted Courvoisier Background. (1937).
This is an unusually large portrait of Snow White from Disney's first animated feature film. Snow White trims the crust of the pie that she has made with the help of the little birds. Snow White is a huge 6 inches tall. The birds are trimmed and applied to the cel of Snow White. The complexity of this background and the sweet moment from the film makes this a particularly fine original cel. This cel was rescued from the Disney Archives,\s and the background was hand painted by Disney artists and was sold through the Courvoisier Gallery of San Francisco in the 1930s. Overall size is 7.25" x 7.25." A classic example of early Disney hand painted animation art.

Carl Barks - Magica De Spell "Vesuvius Airline Frequent Flier" Painting and Preliminary Drawing Original Art (undated)
Carl Barks had just toured continental Europe as well as Iceland, and upon his return he created this original watercolor depicting how Scrooge's nemesis, Magica De Spell, might have made the trip from Mount Vesuvius, Italy to Duckburg. Barks demonstrates how fast it would have been had Magica used twin-broom power instead of her usual single 'stick. Isn't this an awesome concept for a future Harry Potter Quidditch match? How fast could Magica go to get Uncle Scrooge's Lucky #1 dime? The image area of the watercolor is 7" x 9", and the art is in Excellent condition. Included in this lot, as a bonus, is the Carl Barks preliminary sketch, rendered in blue pencil on vellum. It has an image area of 7" x 9.5" and Carl has signed the study at the lower right. Barks once said that Magica's beauty gave her an extra element of power, and this painting will cast its spell over you! (Total: 2 Original Art)

Carl Barks - Uncle Scrooge McDuck "Back to the Klondike" Original Art (undated).
There are but two surviving pieces of original Carl Barks art used in the Uncle Scrooge duck tale, "Back to the Klondike." It's presumed that the publisher destroyed all of the other pages. Sadly, once the all-important film and photostats were shot of the art, publishers often destroyed the original art. This sequence was later created by Carl Barks to replace story art that had been deleted for a reprint edition. For an even later reprint, these new panels replaced the advertisements and announcements that had disrupted the continuity of Barks' original Klondike yarn. Carl drew this "bridge" to restore the continuity to its original version, and included the piece in his
Uncle Scrooge McDuck His Life and Times
, published by Celestial Arts, Berkeley, California in 1981. "Back to the Klondike" was a key story detailing how Uncle Scrooge first struck it rich -- by being "smarter than the smarties and tougher than the toughies." This art features two terrific Uncle Scrooge close-ups, and Donald Duck, Huey, Dewie, and Louie also cameo. The graphite pencil on paper drawing has an image area of 16" x 5.5", and is in Excellent condition. Carl Barks signed the art at the lower right. You'll be "smarter than the smarties" if you go after, and win, this treasure! The panel is printed exactly as it is selling... in black (blue?) and white on page 44.

Walt Disney Studios -- "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Original Hand Painted Production Cel with Courvoisier Background. (1937).
Sleepy, Bashful, Happy, Sneezy and Doc look up adoringly at Snow White. The cel is trimmed and applied to a mahogany wood grain veneer. This is an impressive multiple character pose that shows the character and joy of each of the dwarfs. It was originally sold through the Courvoisier Gallery of San Francisco in the 1930s. Since characters were usually painted on individual cels and overlaid to create the scene, this five-dwarf pose is exceptionally rare and fine. The detailed inking even shows stitch lines on the clothes. Note the rosy pink noses -- the talented ink and paint girls at the Disney studio actually used make-up to give the dwarfs their soft look. Superb condition and large. Dwarfs are 7.75" x 5.5" Cel size is 7.25" x 10.25." A real museum piece.

Walt Disney Studios -- "Pinocchio" Original Hand Painted Production Cel and Courvoisier Background. (1940).
Geppetto, Pinocchio and Figaro are together again in the reunion scene in the belly of Monstro the whale. This sequence was also used to create a fine limited edition cel. (See lot 16081). This huge production cel is in excellent condition and there is only one tiny paint crack on the flesh of Pinocchio's left foot. The characters measure a whopping 8.25" x 9.0" and they are mounted on a paper background measuring 9.5" x 9.5." The complexity of movement made Pinocchio a visual wonder and it is still studied by Disney artists as the paragon of hand drawn animation. The level of detail in this film can only be duplicated today with computers, since the skills used to create this art are largely lost. Here is a real piece of Disney history to be proud of for your collection.

Carl Barks - "Klondike Kate and Troup" Original Painting (1978).
This painting is from the late Carl Barks' series of 53 non-Disney duck paintings. These were created in between two long series of paintings done for Disney of Uncle Scrooge McDuck and Donald Duck. This painting of "Klondike Kate and Troup" has been published in
Carl Barks' Animal Quackers
, on pages 70-71, and would fit right in with the second Uncle Scrooge comic book's "Back to the Klondike" story. Kate would have felt right at home working for Glittering Goldie, Uncle Scrooge's only romantic encounter, as both weren't particular about their clientele, as long as they had loads of gold! This special piece has been in private collections for years, unseen by the public. It was painted in opaque tempera, and measures 10.5" x 14". The painting is in Excellent condition.

The finishes are richly lustrous in this limited edition figurine of wealthy Uncle Scrooge. A metallic silver finish was used on Scrooge's face, as well as a lighter silver hue for his eyes. McDuck's collar has a highly polished finish, and dollar signs are frozen in the pupils of his eyes -- an gag inspired by the Carl Barks comic books. The coins at the base of this figure were designed by Barks himself; they depict City of Duckburg coins. These sculptures sold out in one day at the Disneyana Gallery, during the annual Disneyana Convention held at Walt Disney World. Carl Barks directed that the figure be fashioned after his early 1950s version of Scrooge McDuck, characterized by its long beak and plenty of feathered side-chops. Steve Parks was the figurine's sculptor and it was produced at the Parks Bronze foundry. Carl Barks art-directed Steve to get the portrait perfectly on-guide with the Carl Barks/Disney style guide. The sculpture stands 18" tall, and is in Excellent condition. A certificate of authenticity is included. (Total: 2 items)

Walt Disney Studios -- "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Original Pencil Animation Drawing. (1937).
The Wicked Queen hands the heart box to the Huntsman in this frightening scene. Her sinister eyes convey the seriousness of her request as she tells him to "Bring back her heart...." This is undoubtedly one of the finest drawings in existence from "Snow White." The large finished image also has red pencil showing shading details. Fine erasure marks around her head indicate the reshaping of the crown. Production numbers displayed in the lower left corner and a key scale to the right add to the interest of this most impressive portrait of Disney's first classic villainess. The Queen measures 7.5" x 10." The image area of the paper is 14.75" x 10.5."

Large Feature Comic #15 Dick Tracy and the Kidnapped Princes - Mile High pedigree (Dell, 1941) Condition: VF/NM.
Red is a make-or-break cover color for Golden Age comics -- if a cover's red is faded, your interest will diminish, but if it's reverberant, then your interest is piqued. Consider your interest piqued. The red in the background of this "
Dick Tracy
cover is as lustrous as it was the day it rolled off the presses ... but considering it's from Edgar Church, that's pretty much what you'd expect, isn't it? Overstreet 2004 VF/NM 9.0 value = $732; NM- 9.2 value = $975.

Walt Disney Studios -- "Sleeping Beauty" Original Hand Painted Production Cel and Photograph Background. (1959).
Maleficent, the evil fairy, spreads her arms and casts her spell for the infant Aurora. Her evil wish will condemn the princess to prick her finger and thereby poison herself fatally. (Disney sure liked to poison the good girls!)... but all is not lost. The final spell by the good fairy, Flora, will save the day. Here is Maleficent as animated by Disney legend Marc Davis. She is at her evil best with her arms and her magic staff upraised. This scene inspired a limited edition cel from the Disney Studio, but this is an original production cel. It is presented on a photographic image from the same scene. Maleficent is 11.0" x 7.0" and the background area measures 14.0" x 10.5." A showpiece!

Walt Disney Studios -- "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Original Hand Painted Production Cel and Courvoisier Background. (1937).
Here's an amazing original cel of Dopey with multiple drumsticks from the "Silly Song" sequence. This terrific full figure pose captures the joy and energy of Dopey in a frozen moment of Disney history. The background is hand painted on a mahogany wood grain veneer. Disney employee Helen Nerbovig, along with Guthrie Courvoisier, created the program that enabled Disney enthusiasts to collect original cels from many early Disney films. This exceptional set up was put together for the Courvoisier Gallery Program in the late 1930s. There is a chip of paint missing from Dopey's sleeve and a few hairline paint separations on the arm with the drumsticks. Dopey is 4.5" x 4.5" and the background measures 7.75" x 7."

Walt Disney Studios -- "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Original Hand Painted Production Cel and Courvoisier Background. (1937).
Here's a delightful Dopey from a very funny moment in the film. Dopey carefully locks the door to the dwarfs' diamond mine and then hangs the huge key on a hook right outside the door! Walt paid his animators a bonus for funny scene ideas and this one was a winner. Dopey is in excellent condition and this Courvoisier set up is mounted on a mahogany wood grain veneer background with hand painted shadow effects. One of the best Dopey cels we've seen. Dopey is 4.0" x 4.25" and the background area measures 5.50" x 5.50."

Dopey and the Forest Animals frolic in this lovely Courvoisier set up with a hand painted background. This unusual set up is displayed in a circular mat and looks like a window into the film. The characters are trimmed and mounted in an impressively cute scene with seven characters. Dopey measures 3.0" x 3.75" and the background area measures 7.25" in diameter. This cel shows the soft patina of the colors used in this film and the condition is superb. A delight!
