Fantastic Four #1 (Marvel, 1961) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
Tied with
The Amazing Spider-Man
#1 for third place among the most valuable of all Silver Age comic books, many would argue this is
the
most important of that era. It was the book that ushered in Marvel's Silver Age, a period in which Marvel began challenging DC's dominance after a mostly unchallenging decade of the 1950s. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were the men who could pull it off, and their teamup on this and other titles to soon follow would shake comicdom on its ear. We have not offered this book at a higher grade, and only a small percentage of the copies that CGC has certified have earned higher grades. Step up to the plate, Sluggo, and take a swing at a big, big comic book. Overstreet 2003 VF/NM 9.0 value = $20,675.

The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC VF+ 8.5 Cream to off-white pages.
This is quintessential Spider-Man by co-creator Steve Ditko, the book that kicked off the most popular series of the Silver Age. A nice high-grade example that appears every bit as nice as some of the NM- 9.2 copies we've seen. With no "Marvel chipping" present, a perfect spine, deep colors, and a clean back cover, this one should please even the most picky graders. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $9,350; VF/NM 9.0 value = $20,675.
From the collection of Nicolas Cage.

Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VF- 7.5 Off-white pages.
For many fans of Silver Age Marvel, it all begins here. Sure, the Fantastic Four came first, in November, 1961, but this was the big bomb the House of Ideas dropped on an unsuspecting public, and the reverberations are still being felt. Steve Ditko graduated from 1950s style monster stories to this, the Superhero as Mixed-up Teenager. His art style fit the concept well, and skinny, gawky kids all over the world identified with a Peter Parker who looked as if a slight wind could knock him down. This copy shows a very minor amount of wear; there is a tiny tear on the back cover and some stress on the spine; otherwise it looks sharp and flat and ready to find a place in a first-rate collection. And it even comes with a Marvel Milestone Edition reprint, so you can read the darn thing! Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value =$14,000.

Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) CGC Apparent NM+ 9.6 Slight (P) Off-white pages.
You already know that this Marvel milestone issue has the origin and first appearance of Spider-Man, with a Jack Kirby cover and Steve Ditko art. But you may not know that according to CGC's current census, no copies, restored or unrestored, have been graded higher than 9.6 - and only one unrestored copy has received the certified grade of 9.6. So it goes without saying that restoration or no restoration, this amazing comic ranks among the absolute best of the best. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, piece added, tear seal." Unless you're the most hard-hearted of anti-restoration purists, this is a comic to widen the eyes and quicken the pulse; it's just
beautiful
. Overstreet 2003 VG 4.0 value = $2,526; FN 6.0 value = $3,789.

Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white pages.
The Webslinger had one try-out issue,
Amazing Fantasy
#15, some seven months earlier, and apparently that was enough for Stan Lee to determine he had a sure-fire winner. The Fantastic Four, who appear in this premiere issue, had their own comic title debut some 16 months earlier, which was unquestionably the flagship title of Marvel's Silver Age resurgence. But over the years, Spider-Man caught, then surpassed, the Fantastic Four in terms of popularity. Today, this issue ranks behind only
Amazing Fantasy
#15 and
Showcase
#4 in Overstreet value among all Silver Age comic books. Jack Kirby's collaboration with Steve Ditko on the cover is pure genius, as is Ditko's interior artwork. At Very Fine, less than 10% of the over 400 copies of this milestone book that CGC has certified to date have received higher grades, most of which graded at 8.5 or 9.0, barely higher than our offering. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $9,350.

X-Men #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
The Marvel mutant madness begins with this issue, with the first appearance and origin of professor Xavier's X-Men by Jack Kirby - and let's not forget the introduction of the arch-villain Magneto. While not quite the same instant success as the Fantastic Four, Amazing Spider-Man, or even The Avengers, this issue continues to be one of the hottest Silver Age keys. This well-preserved copy includes a certificate of provenance recording that this copy was purchased off the newsstand in 1963 by Calvin Slobodian and was stored with care in the cool climate of Canada. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $4,500; VF/NM 9.0 value = $7,750.

Fantastic Four #8 (Marvel, 1962) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
This early issue of
The Fantastic Four
contains the very first appearance of the Puppet-Master and Alicia Masters. Jack Kirby not only renders the cover, he also draws the interior story which revolves around the Puppet Master using his radioactive clay to gain control of his daughter, Alicia, and the Thing. While under the fiend's control, they attack the Fantastic Four. Can the other members defeat the Thing and Alicia without hurting them? Will the Puppet-Master get his just desserts? Does the bear live in the woods? Beautiful, high-grade copies with sharp corners and a virtually flawless spine are tough to find, so latch onto this prize. No copy has graded higher than this one according to CGC's most recent census. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $1,275.

All you Spidey collectors know how hard it is to find this one in high grade. As of this writing, CGC has certified approximately 200 copies of the issue, and only three copies have earned a higher grade than our offering, and by the barest of margins; i.e., NM+ 9.6 to NM 9.4. Fantastic Four, Bound Volume of #1 - 24 (Marvel, 1961).
This remarkable bound volume not only contains an impressive run of early Marvel Silver Age goodness, but all of these first 24 issues of the
Fantastic Four
were
not trimmed
during the binding process! That means that these issues could conceivable be unbound by a competent restoration expert, and the individual issues could stand on their own as the Very Good to Fine issues they appear to be - although we don't recommend this practice as the bound volume format is convenient, easy to handle, and just plain cool. One additional point of interest is this volume includes an original numbered tag that records this book as being bound by "Dobbs Bros. Library Binding Co. of St. Augustine, Florida."

This beautiful copy of Spidey's second issue is not easy to locate in the higher grades. This comic has sharp edges and corners, and is glossy and colorful, with above-average page quality. It's certainly an impressive copy any way you look at it. Both the Terrible Tinkerer and the much more menacing Vulture make their debut appearance in this classic early issue. Steve Ditko's cover art is simply, well,
amazing.

Amazing Spider-Man #11 (Marvel, 1964) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages.
This comic features the second appearance of Spider-Man's nemesis Doctor Octopus, with Steve Ditko art. As for condition, this copy has the general perfection we usually only see in 9.6 to 9.8 copies, but is unfortunately marred by a spot of color flaking on the spine about 3" up from the bottom, and a tiny stress crease on the bottom edge of the cover. But there's no denying the remarkably sharp and fresh appearance, this is one
really
nice-looking comic. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $800.

This Silver Age classic has great artwork by Steve Ditko and an appearance by the Incredible Hulk, but the real attraction here is the first appearance of the
Green Goblin
! Every true Spidey fanatic needs a copy of this issue in their collection, and if you've been on the hunt for a really nice copy, your search may be over. This comic has a modest amount of overhang wear on the top edges, but is otherwise flat, solid and beautiful. Within the pages of this issue we're treated to the first appearances of Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Toad, and Mastermind, collectively comprising the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Tales of Suspense #39 (Marvel, 1963) CGC VF 8.0 Cream to off-white pages.
After the introduction over the previous 16 months of such groundbreaking superheroes from Marvel as Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and Hulk, this title finally introduced one of its own with this issue. Naturally, Jack Kirby was tapped to do the cover, and the nearly equally veteran Don Heck was enlisted to assist Kirby on the interior. The pale green background of the front cover makes this one a challenge to find in high grade, and CGC has awarded a grade of NM 9.4 or better to only three copies to date. Fantastic Four #2 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white pages.
Marvel's flagship Silver Age title was just a fledgling second issue at this point, still two issues away from declaring itself "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine!". But Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were flexing their combined muscles to usher in the Marvel Age, comic history in the making. Collectors will attest that the challenge of finding a high-grade copy of issue #2 can be daunting, even more daunting than securing a similarly high-grade copy of the first issue. At this writing, CGC's census lists just three copies as having earned Near Mint grades, and none higher. That means our offering is one of the nicest copies around. The Incredible Hulk #1 (Marvel, 1962) CGC FN+ 6.5 White pages.
Jack "King" Kirby brings to life the most sad of all creatures in the Marvel universe, the Hulk. The constant struggle of the man, Bruce Banner, to keep the monster at bay within himself reflects a struggle each person faces at some point in their life. This first issue features the first appearance and origin of this sad villain, or is he really a hero waging against the terrors of a cruel and demanding society? Key first issues of early Marvels such as this are notoriously hard to find in mid grade or higher. This superb copy features stunningly brilliant, deep, and rich color hues that is atypical in most mid grade books. This shinning cover gloss and vibrant color richness makes this copy highly desirable. Only a two-inch corner crease and some light damage to the spine prevent this specimen from grading higher. Overstreet 2003 FN 6.0 value = $1,900.

Journey into Mystery #83 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VF- 7.5 Cream to off-white pages.
August 1962 was a very good month for origins and first appearances at Marvel Comics. The Fantastic Four and the Incredible Hulk had burst upon the comics scene in November 1961 and May 1962 respectively, both with Jack Kirby cover and interior art to ensure maximum eye-catchingness. The next to come would be Thor in this issue, and Spider-Man in
Amazing Adult Fantasy
the same month. In classic Mr. Meek-becomes-scintillating-superhero-fashion, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduce another character that would help propel the Marvel Age. Unlike numerous other ventures by the "King", Jack would stay with Thor for more than 100 issues. And are we glad! Here's where it all began, an issue that's a must-have for the true Marvelite. The colors on this one are just stunning, as the sky fades from deep purple to light blue, and the fields here are flawless. A superb, problem-free copy. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $375.

Daredevil #1 (Marvel, 1964) CGC VF 8.0 Cream to off-white pages.
Two ex-Timely artists, Jack Kirby and Bill Everett, team up for the cover on this premiere issue, with Everett going solo on the interior. This issue, one of the last in the first wave of Silver Age Marvel superheroes, has shown considerable growth in value in recent years, but still lags behind most other Marvel origin issues from the same period. That could be changing. Two copies of #1 have been graded higher by CGC to date. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $1,554.

X-Men #6 (Marvel, 1964) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
While the Sub-Mariner wasn't bad at heart, he sure had a knack for teaming up with some unsavory characters, and in this issue he briefly joins up with Magneto and the evil mutants to battle the X-Men. Jack Kirby art always deserves a mention, and the CGC grade of Near Mint ensures that this copy is in top condition. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $450.

Daredevil #4 (Marvel, 1964) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
One of our favorite covers among the early issues of the title is by (who else?) Jack Kirby, and interior artist Joe Orlando, he of EC fame, provided some of the best story art in the run. Too bad it was for only three issues! The origin and first appearance of the Purple Man is featured. One of the tougher issues to find in this grade because of the mass of white background, this copy dares you to find fault. Just three copies of issue #4 have received a higher grade than this striking example of Marvel Age greatness. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $400.

Tales of Suspense #3 (Marvel, 1959) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages.
The aliens have landed and there is no hope! Or so, this cover would have us believe. This issue features art by Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Joe Sinnott along with the flying saucer cover. Early pre-hero Marvels are
extremely
hard to find in this kind of condition, if you can find them at all. To further illustrate this point, this is the highest CGC-graded issue to date - the second highest rating only a VF+ 8.5 grade. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $775.

Fantastic Four #48 (Marvel, 1966) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
The Silver Surfer makes his first appearance in this Jack Kirby-Joe Sinnott masterpiece, along with Galactus. This copy is nothing short of complete perfection. It's hard to imagine finding a better-condition copy back in 1966, when this issue hit the stands, let alone now. This is one sharp key comic! Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $1,350.

The Incredible Hulk #2 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white pages.
Here is a very desirable copy of the classic second issue of the Hulk's solo title. In a rare artistic team-up, Jack Kirby's pencils were inked by
Spider-Man
artist Steve Ditko. This issue brings us the first Green Hulk, and he's remarkable articulate on this cover, too. This is a nice high-grade copy that shows very little wear, with bright, vivid colors. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $1,700.

Iron Man #1 (Marvel, 1968) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages.
A Near Mint Plus with white pages? The grade is better than about 97% of all copies of this premiere issue graded by CGC to date. This book has lots of room to appreciate, and, in this condition, our offering figures to appreciate faster than all but a few other copies. Amazingly, you don't have to pay a pedigree premium either! The cover is one of Gene Colan's best, and his interior pencils are supplemented by the inks of legendary EC artist Johnny Craig. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $575.

Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC Apparent VF- 7.5 Extensive (P) Cream to off-white pages.
Is there any of us who doesn't dream of rummaging through an old trunk and coming across this inspired cover from the collaborative talents of Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko? If not, what are you doing reading this catalog, huh? The first issue of Marvel's most popular character features the first appearance of J. Jonah Jameson, who was mighty miffed he didn't appear in Spidey's origin story earlier in
Amazing Fantasy
#15, and proceeds to take it out on the web-slinger for the next few decades. The Fantastic Four get into the act, with a crossover appearance, and there you go! Instant Marvel Age Magic! This book's amazing appearance is owing to very skillful restoration efforts from one of the best in the business. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cleaned, reinforced." Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $9,350.

What a comeback! After being neglected by Marvel for a few years, Stan Lee revived the Sub-Mariner as an antagonist and introduced a whole new generation to the moody Atlantean. This story neatly explains what Subby was doing during his "missing" years. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $2,043.
