GI Joe - Original Prototype (Hasbro, 1964).
Ten-HUT! Stand at attention for the five-star general of GI Joe collectibles. That's right, soldier! Raise your hand and sah-LUTE the first hand-crafted prototype, the original Government Issue Joe, the springboard from which was spawned not just an incredibly successful line of figures and accessories, but a revolution in the toy industry! This twelve-inch-tall icon of plastic, metal, and fabric marked the dawn of the "action figure," an unheard-of concept in 1963, when Hasbro Creative Director Don Levine first shepherded in the concept of an articulated military figure (from an original idea by Stan Weston) that would appeal to young boys in the same way that Barbie had captured the little-girl market. Based in part on the articulated wooden mannequins used by artists, this figure would expand on the popular "toy soldier" concept with a full-articulated man of action that could hold a rifle, crouch in a foxhole, and generally assume almost any pose that a real soldier could. This concept had to be developed and engineered from scratch, as no real antecedent existed in the toy industry. This hand-crafted prototype became that antecedent, and served as the opening shot in a revolution that continues to this day. The first fully-articulated prototype created for both internal visualization and presentations to potential buyers, this 12" figure consists of a plastic body with wire-spring joints, and a hand-painted plastic head that was created by pulling a temporary mold from a carved wooden original. The hand-sewn uniform consists of olive-drab fatigues and field jacket with chevrons, as well as a backpack. Also included are hand-sewn black boots, and plastic combat helmet (the helmet, unfortunately, has sustained some damage, and has a large chunk missing from the back end). Of particular note is this early version of the head, which is wider, and has noticeably different features than the final production model, and the boots, which were as

GI Joe - Prototype Navy Standard Figure with Modified Male Doll (Hasbro, 1964).
An early test for what would become the standard Navy figure, this is another vintage male doll pressed into service to model the early uniform prototypes. Possibly sewn by Hasbro staffer Florence DeLisle, this closely resembles the finished product, with sky-blue chambray shirt and navy blue jeans, the standard outfit of any gob at sea. Smaller details, such as the tiny key ring and keys, would not survive to the final production model, but make this early prototype all the more special. The shoes and socks appear to be store-bought stock items. The clothing is in immaculate condition, appearing like-new. Amusingly, this boyish figure has had some of his baby fat carved away to make him appear more masculine; the face is carved at the back of the neck, around the eyes and cheeks, and nose, with the eyebrows re-painted. Some of the original flocking is also missing. The superb craftsmanship evident on this hand-sewn uniform is a testament to the committment of the Hasbro design team.
From the personal collection of Don Levine, creator of GI Joe.

X-Men #94 (Marvel, 1975) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages.
The original X-Men series had languished in popularity, finally reduced to a few years of reprints before 1975, when two books,
Giant-Size X-Men
#1, followed closely by this issue, the first of the regular continuing series to feature the "New" X-Men, were issued. And the title languished no longer, rivaling
The Amazing Spider-Man
in sales and popularity over the past two decades. Currently ranked third in value among all Bronze Age books, this issue featured a cover by Gil Kane and interior work from the artist who would shepherd the revamped title through its first fourteen issues, Dave Cockrum. Compared to other issues from the time period, relatively few copies have received this high of a grade from CGC to date, and none have received a higher grade. Go for the gusto! Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $950.

The Incredible Hulk #181 (Marvel, 1974) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
Few characters from the Bronze Age have had as much success infiltrating public awareness outside of the comic market as Wolverine has. The two recent X-Men movies have only added to that success which was originally established by Chris Claremont, John Byrne, and Frank Miller. His first full appearance in this issue certainly caught the immediate attention of the "Marvel maniacs" of the day. Bright and colorful, flat and tight. This copy is sure to satisfy the most discriminating collector of high end keys. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $1,150.

Amazing Spider-Man #136 (Marvel, 1974) CGC NM/MT 9.8 Off-white to white pages.
John Romita draws an incredible Green Goblin cover for this issue while writer Gerry Conway writes the tale titled "The Green Goblin Lives Again!" Ross Andru pencils the story wherein the Green Goblin returns...sort of. It's actually the original GG's son, Harry Osborne, heretofore Peter's friend, who's now the super-villain. No copy has been graded higher than this stunner according to CGC's most current census. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $75.

The Flash Giveaway Pinback (DC, 1942).
Once you complete that
Flash
run you've been working on for decades, there's one more item you can't do without... the Flash pinback.
All Flash
#6 had a reader survey, and every kid that submitted one received this button. It is exceedingly rare, one of the hardest DC items to find. Our offering has the most minor rubbing, but there is absolutely no rust, and the colors are bright. This is the finest known example of this piece. Iron Man Series Five Prototype Set (Toy Biz).
The Iron Man line of toys was canceled due to poor sales. The fourth series barely made it out the door before the whole line was cut. Before it was known that the line would be canceled a preview of the fifth series was shown. The fifth series never materialized, and all that's left is the set of prototypes seen here. There are five figures: Dark Aegis, Radiation Armor, Lava Armor, Living Laser and Magnetic Armor. There are less than 25 sets known to exist, and this set is complete with all figures in Mint condition. Rarity is a huge factor here, and this might just be the only set of these figures available.

Golden Records - Amazing Spider-Man #1 Reprint (Golden Records, 1966).
This early record set marked the first time this very key Marvel was reprinted. Golden Records reprinted key Marvel issues like
Fantastic Four
#1,
Journey Into Mystery
#83,
Avengers
#4, and this one,
The Amazing Spider-Man
#1. These records were made to be played while some lucky kid read along with the narration and sound effects. Due to the inherent nature of this item, most of them are in low grade with scratched albums. We were lucky enough to get our hands on an unopened copy of this set still cloaked in the original plastic and in pristine condition. Don't let this one pass you by. Of the four records in the set, the Spider-Man is, by far, the most desirable. There are some very minor tears in the celophane, but the overall integrity is still intact. Wonder Woman Sealed Model Kit (Aurora, 1966).
One of the rarest and most desirable Aurora models, the Wonder Woman kit, more often than not, languished on the toy shelves while rough-and-tumble boys spent their hard-earned allowance on the male superheroes like Superman, Batman, or the Lone Ranger. Consequently, fewer of these kits reached the open market in the first place, making them all the scarcer for collectors to track down; all of this has made the Amazing Amazon a hot commodity for glue-and-plastic hunter-gatherers. This has got to be the finest example of this model kit on the open market -- while we hesitate to call anything of this vintage absolutely mint, this one comes pretty darn close, with 100% unbroken cellophane. The cello on these models most often turns brittle and tears, whereas this one has remained fully intact and supple. Even built-up kits go for hundreds of dollars, so do yourself a favor and go for the best.

The cards are in excellent condition overall, with sharp corners and good centering. A wrapper in poor condition is also included. Also offered in this lot is a set of Topps' 1958 "Target:Moon" cards. This colorful, imaginative set was an excellent blend of science-fiction and science-fact, which was a sure bet to appeal to kids of the late 1950s. This 88-card set is in excellent condition. Here is a sparkling copy of a key Marvel Bronze Age issue, featuring the first appearance of Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu. Jim Starlin lends his considerable talents to the cover and interior art. As of this writing, only four copies of this issue have garnered a 9.8 from CGC, and this one is darn close. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $90.

Ultraman Model Kit (UPC, 1960s).
One of a very small number of items licensed in the United States during
Ultraman
's original syndication run in the late '60s, this model kit is quite rare and highly coveted by Ultraman collectors. This splendid example is still sealed in its original shrink-wrap, although the shrink is a bit brittle and is splitting at the edges. The box itself is near-mint with good color, and has never been opened, so we assume the contents are completely mint as well. Still has the original price sticker (Toy Mart of Beverly Hills!), showing its original retail of $1.49.
From the personal collection of Harlan Ellison.

Amazing Spider-Man #97 (Marvel, 1971) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
Our favorite Web-Head puts a choke hold on the Green Goblin on this John Romita Sr. cover. The interior art, by Gil Kane, tells the second installment in this drug story series. Without Comics Code Authority approval, Marvel stepped out on a limb and published these issues anyway. Upon close inspection of the cover, there are two grey tone areas: one under Spidey's right hand and one under his left foot. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $150.
