Green Hornet Comics #1 Mile High pedigree (Harvey, 1940) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
We have a projection based on early returns; with only six copies of this first issue having been certified by CGC to date, we're predicting it will reign as the nicest specimen indefinitely, if not forever. The Mile High pedigree, you see, makes us a little cocky! The issue features the origin and first comic book appearance of the Green Hornet, Kato, and Black Beauty (his car). The wondrous painted cover goes uncredited, but this copy will show it off impressively for posterity, provided the proud winning bidder will just resist cracking the CGC casing. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $6,000.

Daredevil Comics #1 (Lev Gleason, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages.
Holy cow! Any collector with an interest in Golden Age has got to want a copy of this classic book, one of Overstreet's top 100 Golden Age comics. And what a copy this is - just as fresh as when it first hit the stands, back in 1941. There appears to be a small tear at the top corner of the spine (a bindery cut?), and that may have kept this prize from an even higher grade. Still, at this date, only one other copy has earned a higher grade from CGC. This is an outstanding opportunity to bid on one of the key comics of all time in beautiful unrestored condition. Overstreet 2003 VF/NM 9.0 value = $12,000; NM 9.4 value = $16,000.

Thrill Comics #1 Ashcan Edition (Fawcett, 1940) CGC VF 8.0 White pages.
The most fascinating of the ashcan books,
Thrill Comics
, and its companion
Flash Comics
, ended the long-standing mystery of
Whiz
#1. For years, no one could explain whatever happened to the first issue of
Whiz
until the mid-'80s, when someone stumbled upon multiple copies of two strange-looking books with Capt. Marvel on the cover. Both were identical except for the titles; one was called
Flash
(eight existing copies), and the other
Thrill
(three existing copies). The interior was composed of pages 1-7 and 13 of the Captain Marvel story from
Whiz
#2, yet he carried the name of Captain Thunder. Fawcett apparently made a mad dash to copyright these two titles, but was beaten to the punch by DC (who nabbed Flash) and Nedor (who scored Thrilling). Even Captain Thunder's name was scrapped, thanks to Terry Thunder at Fiction House. Regrouping, Fawcett finally got their act together and put out
Whiz Comics
, re-lettering Capt. Marvel's name throughout the story. These 11 issues were quickly absorbed into the market for around $10,000 each during the late '80s, and few have been offered for sale since. Of the three
Thrill
copies found, this may be the nicest, grading VF 8.0 with white pages. A very light stain is present on the right side, along with minor wear at the top edge near the spine. Considering that the cover, rendered by Leo O'Mealia, was only printed on this issue, its appeal is even greater. Another copy may not surface for sale for quite some time; take advantage of this unique opportunity.
From the collection of Nicolas Cage.

One of the Top 10 Golden Age books by Overstreet values, this milestone issue introduced Captain Marvel to the comic book world. Rated "uncommon" in Gerber's
The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books
, this copy is one of the nicer copies that CGC has graded to date. The color quality and eye-appeal is really quite good, but CGC notes that, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cleaned, re-glossed." Overstreet 2003 VG 4.0 value = $14,000; FN 6.0 value = $21,000.

Amazing-Man Comics #22 Larson pedigree (Centaur, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 White pages.
Paul Gustavson's classic cover goes a long way to illustrate the intrigue of Centaur books. Amazing-Man, Nazi monsters wreaking havoc, the helpless female - it doesn't get much better than this, especially on a non-Timely comic! Gerber rates the book "uncommon", but "practically non-existent" would be the rating for a copy this nice from the Larson pedigree. CGC has certified one unrestored copy in any grade, and you're looking at it. Look at it up close at our website for an even more moving experience! Exciting Comics #28 Mile High pedigree (Nedor Publications, 1943) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages.
The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books
changed the way many collectors chose the issues that they sought. With the publication of that tome of pictures, the cover art became a pre-eminent factor in what people collected. Alas, author Ernie Gerber was not able to get a picture of every single cover for his masterful book; hence, the infamous "Gerber white space" was born. Many collectors seek out these scarce books, not knowing exactly what they are looking for. Occasionally that will result in disappointment when the "found" issue falls short of expectations. That won't be the case here! Our "white space" offering has an incredible Alex Schomburg war cover. Another bonus: this is the Mile High copy, resplendent with superior colors, excellent page quality, a neat distributor mark, and incredible gloss. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $900.

Our Flag Comics #2 Mile High pedigree (Ace, 1941) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
An excellent representation of the Golden Age patriotic comic, this issue features the origin of the Flag, merely a few months after Captain America arrived on the scene. Jim Mooney's brightly-colored cover is rife with havoc being wreaked upon the bad-guy Nazi forces. By far the nicest book of this issue that CGC has graded to date, it has a tight spine, sharp corners, and is super-clean. And if that's not enough, it's also the Mile High copy. Wonder Comics #15 (Better Publications, 1947) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
Of the many fantastic airbrush covers Alex Schomburg produced, a couple stand out as true classics. Included among them is this one, which exhibits a perfect composition by the cover king. The bound beauty, exposed under a giant microscope, is about to be sliced in half when Wonderman busts in, ready to crash the party. The dark colors and background work perfectly, creating an image that is immediately pleasing to the eye. While this book was destined to become a classic the instant it was printed, the fact that this copy grades out at NM makes the book even more appealing. Deep colors, and a perfect spine and edges accentuate the cover even more, creating an item that will draw quite a bit of interest during bidding. Especially since this copy is among the highest CGC-graded issues to date. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $775.

Boy Explorers #2 (Harvey, 1946) Condition: VF+.
A Simon and Kirby production, this title lasted just two issues, then became
Terry and the Pirates
with issue #3. Overstreet advises this second issue is "scarce", while Gerber goes further, giving this a "rare" rating. This small ( 5.5" x 8.5") book, produced all in black and white (cover and interior pages), was only distributed to mail subscribers. This may well be the finest copy in existence. CGC has given a VF+ grade to this beauty, but has not encapsulated it. We have never before offered for bidding a copy of this, or even the more common first issue, and it could be a cold day in Satan's crib before you have another chance at this terrific rarity. Green Hornet Comics #6 Mile High pedigree (Harvey, 1941) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
Already a familiar hero in pulps, radio, and movies, Green Hornet, with sidekick Kato, first appeared in comics in 1940. The previous three issues featured Bert Whitman covers, and while Overstreet doesn't let on who did this one, it might have been Whitman. The Mile High collection comes through with a typically outrageous copy, cover colors filling the viewer's retinas to capacity. The next nicest copy in CGC's census for this issue comes in at a distant FN 6.0. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $1,275.

Jumbo Comics #10 (Fiction House, 1939) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages.
Overstreet gives this Lou Fine cover the "classic" notation, and it's easy to see why. This was Fiction House's first comic book title, and this issue was the first in the regular-sized (for the day) 68-page format. With this title, the great art didn't stop at the cover. Inside are the works of such famed artists as Will Eisner, Dick Briefer, and Bob Kane. Gerber calls this a "scarce" issue, and CGC has graded just three copies to date. This copy is the best! This is the nicest, by a long shot, of the three unrestored copies of issue #4 that CGC has reviewed to date. With this pedigree, of course, being the highest-graded copy around is the norm. The fiery cover is so clean, crisp, and bright, it seems incongruent with its age of 60 years. Gerber's

The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books,
but even when you find a copy, chances are it won't be this nice. At this date, this premiere issue is too large for CGC to encapsulate, but it is significant to note that although subsequent issues are small enough for encasement, CGC has certified copies of just two issues of the title that ran for five years before its title change to

This classic injury-to-eye cover exemplifies why this title is arguably the most over-the-top of the pre-Code horror titles that specialized in graphic shock value; you know, your decapitations, your dismemberments, your torture, all those things that made you squirm, go "eeeyyyewww!", and eagerly await the next gory scene. Very few copies of this title have been certified by CGC to date, and high-grade copies are almost unheard of. Almost. Here's one, and it is the highest-graded copy to be certified by CGC to date. All issues featured Al Feldstein covers and interior art and are very difficult to find in high-grade, much less the super high-grade offered here. This is where Fawcett's most popular Golden Age title started. That Jack Kirby did the premiere issue isn't surprising. The "King" would show up virtually anywhere, with any publisher, to launch yet another superhero. Gerber rates this an "uncommon" book, and Overstreet warns, "The cover was printed on unstable paper stock and is rarely found in Fine or Mint condition." CGC hasn't seen an unrestored copy yet that rated a grade higher than VG- 3.5! This is the highest "Apparent" grade yet awarded for the issue. Captain Marvel Adventures #nn (#1) (Fawcett, 1941) CGC GD/VG 3.0 Light tan to off-white pages.
Captain Marvel was enormously popular during the Golden Age, at his apex outselling bitter rival,
Superman,
and justifying bi-weekly issues. First appearing in
Flash Comics
(not the DC title) and
Thrill Comics,
both basically ashcan, promotional books that were not distributed to newsstands, in January 1940, and in
Whiz Comics
#2 a month later, Captain Marvel's own titled comic book would run over 12 years and for 150 issues. The series was shortened by DC's long-running, ultimately successful, copyright infringement suit against Fawcett. Jack Kirby's art was featured in this first issue, yet another jewel in the crown the "King" so richly earned. This is an "uncommon" book in Gerber's scarcity terminology, and next to non-existent in high grade, due to the cover's unstable paper stock. To date, the nicest copy to be certified by CGC earned a mere Very Good Minus 3.5. So, our offering is one of the finest known copies of this key Golden Age book. CGC notes, "1-inch tear on 12th page." Overstreet 2003 GD 2.0 value = $2,600; VG 4.0 value = $5,200.

Spooky #1 File Copy (Harvey, 1955) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
This heart-stopping red cover of the premiere issue starring "The Tuff Little Ghost", came about two years after his first appearance in
Casper the Friendly Ghost.
This displays more like a NM 9.4 book than its assigned CGC grade, the lower grading resulting from the combination of a miscut; an almost invisible, tiny crease at the bottom of the front cover; and a few trivial signs of stress along the spine. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $293; VF/NM 9.0 value = $422.

Master Comics #39 Mile High pedigree (Fawcett, 1943) CGC VF/NM 9.0 White pages.
Plenty of kids know how to surf, but only Captain Marvel Jr. can
surf on a torpedo
- how cool is that? Mac Raboy gives us his fantastic artwork on the cover and interior of this issue. Credit for the spectacular condition of this tough Golden Age comic goes to Edgar Church and the favorable climate of his Denver basement. This is currently the best, and only, copy to be certified by CGC. Overstreet 2003 VF/NM 9.0 value = $527; NM 9.4 value = $685.

Prize Comics #7 (Prize, 1940) CGC Apparent FN 6.0 Slight (A) Off-white pages.
The origin and first appearance of Frankenstein by Dick Briefer is overshadowed by the origin and first appearance of Simon and Kirby's Black Owl. Another first appearance is made by the Green Lama. Overstreet says this is a "scarce" issue, and CGC has graded only two copies of the book to date. This one looks nicest upon first review, but CGC notes, "Restoration incudes: small amount of glue on spine of cover at staples." Overstreet 2003 FN 6.0 value = $546.

Thrilling Comics #1 (Better Publications, 1940) CGC VF 8.0 White pages.
Only three months after
Best Comics
#1 became Better Publications' first comic book, this title was launched in the early days of the Golden Age. The premiere issue featured the origin and first appearance of Dr. Strange, not to be confused with the Silver Age Marvel Master of the Mystic Arts. Just one other copy of this issue, graded at 9.0, keeps this offering from ranking number one in CGC's census among all issues #1 of this title graded to date. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $1,850.

Samson #3 Mile High pedigree (Fox Features Syndicate, 1941) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
Joe Simon's cover is striking - a purple boat, a yellow sea, and a blood-red sky creating a most unusual color combination. Navy Jones makes an appearance in this issue. This wonderful Mile High copy is the highest CGC-graded example to date and has the distinctive distributor mark neatly and cleanly placed in the logo area. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $426; VF/NM 9.0 value = $785.

We've got a cross-dressing alert! If you look closely Pokey Oakey is wearing a corset on this cover, drawn by the very talented Bob Montana. These early MLJ comics are in high demand and are difficult to locate in any condition; the newsstand-fresh appearance of this pedigree copy make this stunning comic a sight to behold. This is currently the highest graded, and only, copy to yet be certified by CGC - a true testiment to it's rarity. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $785.

America's Greatest Comics #1 Rockford pedigree (Fawcett, 1941) VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
Squarebound comics always seem to present a problem to collectors, as the nature of the book makes them tough to remain in good shape. The spines are quick to fall apart, and many are found with the paper peeling away from the edge after just a few readings. Here's a Golden Age squarebound, the first from Fawcett, featuring Captain Marvel, Spy Smasher, Bulletman, and others on a beautiful cover by Mac Raboy. Best of all, the spine looks nice. There's just a bit of a crease along the left-hand side, though, which is another problem with squarebound books. This is still a great-looking copy any collector would be proud to own. This comes with a Rockford Certificate of Authenticity. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $1,900; VF/NM 9.0 value = $2,850.

America's Best Comics #18 Mile High pedigree (Nedor Publications, 1946) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
Lordy, what a cover! Overstreet affirms it is a classic. Alex Schomburg manages to squeeze torture, bondage, a babe, hooded goons, the Fighting Yank, the Black Terror, and Doc Strange into one kettle o' commotion. This beautiful Mile High copy is, by far, the nicest copy of this issue CGC has yet to certify. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $675.

Strange Worlds #1 (Avon, 1950) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages.
Avon presented some of the earliest sci-fi titles, and, showing its pulp heritage, placed great emphasis on its covers to sell books. Gene Fawcette provides the cover here, with Joe Kubert and John Giunta showing off their stuff with story art in this issue. This impressive copy is just a quarter-grade off the highest grade that CGC has assigned to date for the premiere issue. Overstreet 2003 VF/NM 9.0 value = $985; NM 9.4 value = $1,275.

Master Comics #35 Rockford pedigree (Fawcett, 1943) CGC NM- 9.2 Cream to off-white pages.
Captain Marvel Jr. fights the Nazi's latest secret weapon, the Flame, on this riveting Mac Raboy cover. Patriotic war covers continue to demand a premium in the marketplace, and are in particularly high demand when in "grade." This cover excels on both accounts, currently possessing the second highest CGC-grade for issue #35 to date. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $740.

Famous Crimes #1 (Fox Features Syndicate, 1948) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages.
Where did
this
copy come from?! High-grade copies of Fox books from the period are rare enough, but this copy is near one-of-a-kind and not from one of the elite pedigrees! CGC hasn't certified a higher grade yet for this issue, and probably won't. The Blue Beetle makes an appearance, but that was anti-climatic to the moll who definitely stands out on the cover. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $550.
