Weird Comics #1 Mile High pedigree (Fox, 1940) CGC VF/NM 9.0 White pages.
Most of these early Fox books are uncommon, and just don't turn up in this grade. Almost never, that is! The second-nicest copy that CGC has seen to date was graded significantly lower than our offering, at "6.5". Lou Fine's bondage cover would be desirable in just about any grade, but this copy is truly one-of-a-kind remarkable. Voodoo Man, Thor, Birdman, Dr. Mortal, and Typhoon begin in this issue. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $5,700.

Catman Comics #1 (Continental, 1941) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
Cat Man is one of the harder to find titles of the Golden Age. Even when you can find them they tend to be low grade, brown, brittle etc. It would almost seem near impossible for any of this title to have survived in high grade...but get a gander at this. This issue has an action-packed cover by Charles Quinlan who had a style unlike any other. This issue, other than Cat-Man, features the Deacon, Dr. Diamond & Ragman, the Black Widow and Blaze Baylor. This bright issue is the highest graded and it is highly unlikely that there will be another to dethrone it. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value =4200.

Silver Streak Comics #3 Mile High pedigree (Lev Gleason, 1940) CGC NM- 9.2 White pages.
In this issue, not only do you receive the heralded Edgar Church copy, you also will get the first appearance and origin of the Silver Streak on this incredible silver ink cover. Dickie Dean, Lance Hale, Bill Wayne and the Planet Patrol begin in this issue also, with a wonderful cover composition and content by Binder. Only a handful of these silver-inked covers were able to ever retain their luster and ink reflectivity and here is the best of the best. CGC has this copy as the highest-graded in their database at the time of this entry. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $3,900.

Some three months before the first issue would hit the stands, the ashcan copy was printed. Featured herein is the first appearance of Scoop Smith, "daring young newspaper reporter whose beat is the entire world". Unfortunately, Scoop's career didn't fare nearly as well as this phenomenal ashcan copy. Not listed in Overstreet 2002. Value of

Plastic Man #2 Mile High pedigree (Quality, 1944) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages.
After first appearing in
Police Comics
in 1941, the rubbery super-hero got his own title in 1943. This second issue came about six months later. Jack Cole's cover and interior art brought just the right touches of, as this cover promises, "thrills, chills, and laffs" to the character, propelling the title to a run of over 14 years. The colorful cover is all the more stunning from the white background, appearing snow-blindingly fresh on this famed pedigree copy. CGC's census places this above all other issues #2 certified to date. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,850.

Terrific Comics #4 Mile High pedigree (Continental Magazines, 1944) CGC VF+ 8.5 White pages.
If you are looking for a really important key for your collection, look no further. This incredibly graphic and horrific image brings back the true image of war. With Gerber estimating there being under 50 still in existance, it is amazing that you have the opportunity to own the very best of those last remaining issues. Brilliantly bold cover colors, wonderful structure and a pedigree like no other. This is the highest-graded copy of issue #4 that CGC has graded as of this writing. Doc Savage Comics #2 Mile High pedigree (Street & Smith, 1940) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white.
If it looks pulp-ish, it could be because the character came from pulps, first appearing in that medium in 1933. In this issue: the origin and first appearance of Ajax the Sun Man. And if this offering looks as fresh as when you first saw it on the newsstands (how old
are
you anyway?), thank Edgar Church and his stack of funny books we like to call the Mile High Collection. The issue is uncommon in any grade, unique in this near-flawless state. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,800.

Terrific Comics #5 Overstreet Copy (Continental Magazines, 1944) CGC VF 8.0 White pages.
Alex Schomburg renders an incredible bondage cover that rivals his revered and infamous
Suspense Comics
#3. This copy came from Bob Overstreet's personal collection, so you know that it was the nicest available to him. In fact, this is far and away the nicest copy that we have ever had the privilege of offering in a Heritage auction. The colors are rich and deep, and the pages are bone white. When was the last time that you saw white pages on a Continental? Only one copy has been graded higher by CGC and good luck getting your hands on that one! This copy is conservatively graded, and under close scrutiny, you can't help but ask yourself "why did this not grade higher?" If this book is your holy grail, then don't miss this chance to obtain this outstanding copy. You may never have another opportunity to acquire a copy this nice. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $4,080.

Air Fighters Comics Vol. 1 #2 Pennsylvania pedigree (Hillman Fall, 1942) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
The cover art by Charles Biro is a real attention-grabber, if a little on the bloody side. But who was responsible for the blaring cover messages, Stan Lee? "Greatest Comic Book Yet!!" "Only 10 cents-Nothing Like It!!" "Who is Airboy? He's What You've Waited For! See Inside!!" Airboy makes his first appearance in this issue and eventually takes over the title completely. This primo pedigree copy is the only issue #2 to earn a CGC grade higher than VF 8.0 to date. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $4,000.

Here is the premiere issue of a series that ran for twelve years, the first 22 issues as this title and the remaining 89 issues as
Airboy
. The cover spotlighted the Black Commander whose only appearance was in the first issue. The Mile High copy has the impressively preserved colors you expect and overall this book is the nicest issue #1 of the title that CGC has graded to date. Ernie Gerber's
Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books
call this an "uncommon" book, and it is indeed scarce in any grade. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $2,400.

Schomburg's innovative work with airbrush covers is displayed beautifully by this near-perfect copy. In this case he incorporates bondage, a crimson-haired lovely, a diabolical meanie with a poised scalpel, and Wonderman into one mesmerizing masterpiece. Tara begins with this issue. CGC hasn't awarded a higher grade for this issue, and similarly high-grade copies of issue #15 have been in great demand. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $740.

This is a "scarce" issue, but, like two other issues of the short four-issue run, probably wouldn't rate much mention except for the dynamic L. B. Cole covers, this one rated a "classic" by Overstreet. CGC has awarded Very Fine or higher status to just three unrestored copies of the issue to date. Target Comics #7 (Novelty Press, 1940) CGC VF- 7.5 Cream to off-white pages.
We are lucky to be able to offer this very desirable and incredible book in this auction. The Spacehawk story is enhanced by the stunning Basil Wolverton artwork as only he can render it. The imminent battle is palpable because of Wolverton's fine line and portrayal of action. Gerber lists this book as "rare", and Overstreet calls it "scarce". All-Negro Comics #1 (All-Negro Comics, 1947) CGC GD+ 2.5 Cream to off-white pages.
In coins, stamp and pretty much every other areas of collectibles the rarity factor rules the roost. That is not the case in comics... yet. Some day in the near future comic collectors will realize that there are not enough of certain issues to go around and prices will skyrocket accordingly. Get the jump on the trend with this book. This book is actually listed in
The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books
as being a "9" on the Gerber scarcity index. What that means is that Ernie Gerber estimated less than ten copies of this issue actually survived the ravages of time. The nature of the book itself lends to the fact that it was probably scarce from the moment it hit the stands. It is directed at a small portion of the population and the cover price, 15 cents, was a nickel more than the other titles on the stands. It is also listed as rare in
The Overstreet Price Guide
. Most known copies have brown pages so this already has an advantage over the others, having cream to off-white pages. This title is rarely found in better than FN condition but this clean copy is actually very nice for the grade assigned. Not too many collectors can boast owning a copy of this book so here is your chance to add your name to that select few. Overstreet 2002 GD 2.0 value = $625.

The Black Raiders, Miss Espionage, Merlin the Boy Magician, and Dr. Mephisto make for an eclectic mix, but the real draw(ing) here is sensational cover by L. B. Cole. This Mile High gem looks Near Mint or better at first review, but the back cover, at the top of the spine, reveals an impact dent to account for the "minus" appendage. Hands down, this is one of the greatest covers of the Golden Age. Unfortunately, Gerber does not do it justice, but please try to see the expanded photo of this one on the Heritage web site. Mystery Men Comics #1 Windy City pedigree (Fox, 1939) CGC FN+ 6.5 Light tan to off-white pages.
Rex Dexter of Mars comes through the window to rescue the damsel in distress from the psychotic doctor in this dramatic Lou Fine cover. It is hard to overstate the importance of this book containing, as it does, the first appearance of the popular Fox characters: Blue Beetle, Green Mask, and Rex Dexter of Mars. Additionally, the artistry of Lou Fine has been the inspiration for numerous comic artists from Murphy Anderson to Gil Kane, because of Fine's mastery of both line and form along with his unearthly understanding of human anatomy. All these are evident in the contorted facial muscles of the fiendish doctor, his unholy grip on the knife, and the dramatic folds in his shirt. Truly a book that you can appreciate for the aesthetics as well as importance. This Windy City comic has bright colors. According to the CGC census, this is the highest graded certified copy. This is the first time we have offered this issue, and this is the first copy to be graded by CGC, an indication the issue is more uncommon than the first two issues (also offered in this auction!). This is classic Donald in bright technicolor, the copy just missing high-grade status by the accumulation of minor dents and stress signs, which do not break cover colors. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $1,200.

Blue Beetle #56 Mile High pedigree (Fox Features Syndicate, 1948) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
We speak repeatedly of the difficulty in finding Fox books from this era in high-grade condition. And sure enough, CGC has certified just one copy of issue #56 with a grade better than FN+ 6.5, and yes, it is the Mile High copy here. The cover colors, especially the rich scarlet background look so uncharacteristic for Fox, yet so typical for a Mile High comic. Jack Kamen gives great "good girl" story art. And Dr. Wertham cites the book in his
Seduction of the Innocent

Blue Beetle #57 Mile High pedigree (Fox Features Syndicate, 1948) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
One of only three copies of the issue to be certified to date by CGC, this one blows away the second-nicest copy by more than a full grade. The Blue Beetle barely appears on the cover of his own titled book, letting the headlighted woman with the red dress on sell the mag. The beautifully simple cover scheme is starkly stunning on the Mile High copy. Inside, Jack Kamen works his magic for the last time on this title, it would never again be the same. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $850.

Century of Comics #1 (Eastern Color, 1933) CGC G+ 2.5 Cream to Off-white pages.
You can't go too much farther back than this. This is a great book from the dawn of the comic book as we know it today. Can you imagine the excitement some kid felt when he received what was essentially weeks and weeks worth of his favorite funny pages all rolled up in one? The winner will be just as thrilled when they receive this one. It looks so much nicer than the given grade. The cover is bright and unblemished. The red and yellow on the cover can not look much different than it did when this book was new 70 years ago. There are two pieces of tape on the interior cover at the staples which account for the drop in grade. You can get a beautiful looking book from the genesis of comics for the right price with this one. This book is also of interest to the collectors of giveaway books. Overstreet 2002 GD 2.0 value = $3670.

Tomb of Terror #15 File Copy (Harvey, 1954) CGC NM- 9.2 Cream to off-white pages.
This is one of
the
classic horror covers from Harvey's contribution to the genre. Note the absolute terror-stricken expression of the girl as she witnesses the face exploding in front of her. A truly grisly cover with flying teeth, bits of flesh and an eyeball about to be launched from its socket. There are few, if any, covers that can match the shear ferociousness of this
Tomb Of Terror
#15. This is the pinnacle copy to own, as it is the highest-graded copy by CGC to date. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $500.

Top-Notch Comics #14 Mile High pedigree (MLJ, 1941) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
As the superhero rule book clearly states, it is highly recommended that you should always first try to save the gorgeous blonde in bondage from being tortured by the fanged zombiemen. This, the Black Hood knows and knows well. Masterfully done shading on the gal and the bold inks literally jump off the page. This Edgar Church copy is so nice, it is the highest graded example by CGC at this time. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $625; NM 9.4 value = $1,100.

Military Comics #20 Mile High pedigree (Quality, 1943) CGC NM- 9.2 White pages.
Reed Crandall, one of several excellent artists who took a turn interpreting the super-team, created the cover here and also worked on interior story art. This is a most impressive copy, missing being the highest-graded among issues #20 yet certified by CGC by a quarter-grade. The book is practically flawless, save for a narrow dust shadow along the front right edge. You did notice it's the Mile High copy, didn't you? Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $800.

Planet Comics #30 Crowley pedigree (Fiction House, 1944) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
As great as the early Zolnerowich covers were on this title, Joe Doolin took up the gauntlet with issue #26 and proceeded to embellish the science fiction themes with peerless "good girl" art for several years, while continuing to draw mean aliens and backgrounds just chock-full of action. It's all here in a mesmerizing copy that currently enjoys the status of being the nicest copy of issue #30 that CGC has certified. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,125.

Police Comics #30 Mile High pedigree (Quality, 1944) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
This stunning issue contains an awesome Jack Cole cover and interior artwork by Spirit's master, Will Eisner. The cover features a portrait of Plastic Man with Woozy Winks being choked by a goon, as reflected in Plastic Man's goggles. It's a very cool cover the concept of which would be used again nearly a decade later in the classic science fiction cover for
