Detective Comics #38 (DC, 1940) CGC VF/NM 9.0 White pages.
Batman without Robin? The Caped Crusader managed eleven issues of the title without the Boy Wonder, and in more recent times, has returned to solo work. But beginning with this issue, the Boy Wonder is introduced and the Batman/Robin team is born. It's hard to imagine the hundreds of stories in such titles as
Detective Comics
,
Batman
, and
World's Finest Comics
from the Golden Age to the Modern Age without Robin. Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson combine for classic cover and interior artwork, and this copy is second to only one other copy CGC has reviewed. Among the Top 100 Golden Age Comics in the 2002 edition of the
Overstreet Price Guide
, this comic tied for 14th place (and is on the rise). One of our most prized offerings for this auction. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $45,000.

Adventure Comics #72 Mile High pedigree (DC, 1942) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages.
Jack Burnley's last cover of the run ranks among the best of DC Golden Age, utilizing bondage and the ever-popular mad scientist.
Adventure Comics
#72 is also the first Simon and Kirby Sandman, who would take over the title for the remaining large logo issues. Simon and Kirby were the Dynamic Duo of the Golden Age, and this book was their introduction to DC. This is by far the highest copy graded, and being the Mile High/Edgar Church copy, it's a pretty safe bet that there will
never
be a nicer copy. Every once in awhile you land a copy of a book that tells you that your incessant search for an upgrade is over... this is that book! Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $14,000.

Detective Comics #40 (DC, 1940) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
When one thinks of icon books this issue comes immediately to mind. You have the second appearance of Batman and Robin in an action sequence, and the first time Robin is actually placed in peril. The wonderful perspective of Robin's plight is truly palpable as Batman rushes to the rescue and confronts the Joker in his first ever cover appearance. This first appearance and origin of Clayface also contributes to the importance of this true key issue. At the time of this writing, this is the highest graded CGC copy and it certainly shows. The bold and vivid colors jump off the page and let you know that you are looking at something very special indeed. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $8,200.

Crypt of Terror #17 Gaines File pedigree 1/10 (EC, 1950) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
The best known of the EC horror titles is probably
Tales From the Crypt
, but that was preceded by this title, which ran three issues before the name change. This, in fact, was the first of the vaunted "New Trend" titles to hit the stands and arguably the most important pre-Code horror comic book of all. Johnny Craig and Al Feldstein ensured the success of the fledgling genre with their stunning art. This copy is as close to perfect as you're likely to find. CGC hasn't awarded a higher grade for this issue and Bill Gaines considered this the very best copy of issue #17 that he preserved in his vault for so many years. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $3,300.

Crime Patrol #15 Gaines File pedigree 1/11 (EC, 1950) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
If issue #17 of
The Crypt of Terror
launched the "New Trend", the pre-launch occurred with this issue of the series when the name was still
Crime Patrol
. Herein is the introduction of the Crypt Keeper and the Crypt of Terror and our nightmares would never be the same! When Bill Gaines picked primo copies to save he picked this copy as the
most
primo. CGC seconds the motion, assigning the copy the highest grade yet for the issue. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $3,000.

The Crypt Keeper brings us this first issue of this title after the name change from
The Crypt of Terror
. This is the title that ushered in a wave of horror and terror upon America's unsuspecting youth, years later spawning a movie and HBO's TV show of the same title. Johnny Craig does his magic on this eerie cover of a man observing his own tombstone being chiseled. This fantastic issue features interior art by Craig, Al Feldstein and Ghastly Graham Ingels. This incredibly crisp copy is tied with three others as being the highest graded CGC copy to date. There is no Gaines File certificate accompanying this lot. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,350.

This is such a brilliant copy of the title that inaugurated the Golden Age of Comics, you just know Edgar Church had something to do with it! It's the only copy of issue #30 to score such a grade from CGC to date so you might want to rethink holding out for a 9.4. Classic Golden Age contributing artists include Jack Burnley, Sheldon Moldoff, Bob Kane, Jerry Siegel, and Joe Shuster. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $2,500.

Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC Apparent VG/FN 5.0 Extensive (P) Cream to off-white pages.
Superman's original title vehicle,
Action Comics,
couldn't tell all the tales that needed to be told about the Man of Steel, so this title was launched a year after Supe's first appearance in 1938. At this date fewer copies of this issue have been certified by CGC than copies of
Action
#1. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cleaned, reinforced." Ranked by Overstreet as the fourth most valuable Golden Age comic book, it's one of those covers that quickens the heartbeat of any serious comic book collector. Overstreet 2002 GD 2.0 value = $15,000; FN 6.0 value = $45,000.

Shock SuspenStories #1 Gaines File pedigree 8/11 (EC, 1952) CGC NM/MT 9.8.
Al Feldstein's classic electrocution cover launches the title with a jolt. The usual excellent cadre of E.C. story artists (Ingels, Kamen, Orlando, and Davis this time) ensure beauty is more than skin deep. One lone copy of this issue somehow coaxed an unbelievable MT 9.9 from CGC, otherwise our offering would have been the highest graded copy to date. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $950.

More Fun Comics #29 Mile High pedigree (DC, 1938) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
This book is the ultimate in comic book perfection. One of the many great things about this book is that "Church" is actually written in pencil at the top of the spine. There is no doubt that this is the best copy in existence, and CGC confirms that not only is this the highest recorded grade for this issue, but is also the only copy that has been sent in to them, confirming its rarity in
any
condition. It really does live up to the high standards that people have come to expect from this collection. It is brand new, yet 65 years old. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $2,125.

The Haunt of Fear #16 (#2) Gaines File pedigree 1/9 (EC, 1950) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages.
The Old Witch makes her first appearance in this issue from August of 1950, with Jack Kamen, the legendary "good girl" artist, providing "ugly girl" art for a change. Johnny Craig, Jack Davis, and George Evans help with interior art. The unusual yellow background for the navy blue logo make this a particularly eye-catching cover irrespective of the signature Craig cover. And once your eyes are caught the outrageous condition of the Gaines File copy ensures they won't get away easily. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,400.

One of the "key" books in the whole run of DC's namesake, this might be the economy mid-grade you've been holding out for. Batman's origin is told for the first time here, right after the classic Bob Kane/Jerry Robinson cover which has Batman wearing a gun holster before he mellowed out and perfected his array of nifty Batarangs. Weird Science 15 (#4) Gaines File pedigree 7/9 (EC, 1950) CGC NM+ 9.6 Cream to Off-white pages.
Everything about this comic is fantastic: the artwork, the stories and the condition. Feldstein's classic
War of the Worlds
cover artwork is matched only by the cover story inside. Other contributors to this issue are Harvey Kurtzman, Graham Ingels and Jack Kamen. As for condition, CGC's grade pretty much tells the whole story. This comic is sure to impress even the most condition-conscious collector! As an interesting historical note, the giant
color
television on the cover was an invention of Feldstein's imagination; color TV did not yet exist. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $925.

All Star Comics #8 (DC, 1941) CGC FN- 5.5 Off-white pages.
Early
All Star Comics
issues are always jam-packed with superheroes and pages, this issue is a whopping 76 pages and the second most significant of the illustrious run, after only issue #3 where The Justice Society was born. Why, you ask? It's because this book heralds the first appearance of Wonder Woman! Maybe others will overlook the book, allowing you to bid unopposed for this hugely important key issue, but chances are there will be more than slight demand for this one. And even though this is a mid-range condition copy, it ranks in the upper echelon of those CGC has graded to date. Go ahead, make your day and venture a bid. This one would be the feature of most collections. Overstreet 2002 FN 6.0 value = $7,713.

Batman Utility Belt Toy (Ideal, 1966).
The
Batman
TV show debuted in 1966 and created a whole new wave of fans of the masked Crime Fighting Detective. With the wild success of the TV show, toy manufacturers were poised to capitalize on its success. This utility belt is just one example of the myriad of products that enticed children. This item consisted of a whole host of tools that any Caped Crusader needed to fight the villains of the world. The centerpiece of this toy set was the bright yellow flexible adjustable plastic belt (fitting waist sizes up to 32") to which the various implements could be attached. The items attached to the utility belt included a small flashlight, a grappling hook with rope, a black plastic batarang, and a gun that could shoot a message canister or a grenade. The last piece was of paramount importance to any hero fighting crime, the Batcuff. Amazingly, an original set of instructions is still intact which describes safe operation of the various components. A couple items have minor damage and the grenade has been glued to its shaft. Also, some items are no longer attached to the backing board and are loose in the box. The box is solid but has moderate overall wear, with some light creasing. Overall the toy set is in great condition.

Captain Action Green Hornet Uniform Set (Ideal, 1967).
Make way for the Holy Grail! Although Spider-Man is tough (and in high demand due to the recent feature film), the Green Hornet uniform set, mint in its original packaging, is the ultimate Impossible To Find Captain Action collectible. The set was released at the very tail-end of the second wave of uniform sets and had poor distribution in some areas. Add to this the fact that the Hornet's popularity was waning by this point in history, a fact reinforced by the poor performance of the TV series that emerged at about the same time. This is a superb piece. The costume and accessories and in mint condition, and have never been removed from the box; the original tape seals are still in place. The box has some condition problems. There are noticeable creases in both of the top corners, and another crease between the 'c' and 't' in the word 'Action.' The celophane window is crinkled at the top center, and in the top left corner. There is a noticeable impact crease running down the left side panel, and the top panel has significant creasing centered around the dotted dividing line. The back side of the box is excellent overall, with a quarter-sized crease along the bottom edge, and a 2" scrape running through the Aquaman and Green Hornet pictures, which does not break the ink. And while we feel it is important to note these condition issues in the name of full disclosure, it can be truthfully said that they detract very little from the overall presentation of this beautiful piece; the uniform and accessories still have a crisp, like-new appearance, with bold colors. The box presents very well overall, and given the unbelievable rarity of this piece, few are likely to notice the slight imperfections of the packaging -- they'll simply be amazed that you own one of these rare treasures! As with many of the Captain Action items we are offering in this catalog, this is the actual piece that is pictured in the recently-released book

Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC PR 0.5 Cream to off-white pages.
The one and only Man of Steel gets his own book at last with this title. Superman's origin is retold in this issue that is masterfully drawn by Superman's creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. This American icon of truth, justice, and the American way has been a symbol of enduring greatness through several wars, the flower power of the sixties, and the tumultuous roaring 1990s and beyond. While this copy may not be the highest-graded copy CGC has certified to date, it is still a
Superman
#1. This is a milestone book, second in historical importance only to
Action Comics
#1 when you're talking about comic book issues about Krypton native. Because of the grade, this copy should prove relatively affordable. CGC notes, "1/2 of last page missing, does not affect story. Wrong back cover. INCOMPLETE." View the close-up image at our website to determine whether this one's for you! Overstreet 2002 GD 2.0 value = $15,000.

Tales From the Crypt #23 Gaines File pedigree Certificate Missing (EC, 1951) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages.
One of Al Feldstein's most famous covers gets this issue off to a rousing start and the morbid fun continues with macabre masters Graham Ingels' and Johnny Craig's inside work. It appears that only a dust shadow along the back left and bottom keep this copy from soaring to 9.8. But then, no other copy of this issue has won that grade from CGC yet. There is no Gaines File certificate accompanying this lot. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $650.

Tales From the Crypt #31 Gaines File pedigree Certificate Missing (EC, 1952) CGC NM/MT 9.8 Off-white pages.
This unbeatable copy displays colors, corners, and a spine you could only hope to find even if you were the first little Sluggo to spin the comic stand the day the new comics arrived in 1952! And here it is, fifty years after this outrageous book was published. Jack Davis gives us a gory cover (by anticipation of what's about to happen), then invites mates Kamen, Ingels, and Williamson to assist him with interior story art. This issue marked Williamson's first E.C. art. There is no Gaines File certificate accompanying this lot. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $540.

Weird Fantasy 16 (#4) Gaines File pedigree 8/11 (EC, 1950) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
This copy has the look of an even higher grade, with a shiny, flawless black space background dominating Al Feldstein's cover. So, why "only" a NM- 9.2 grade? Closer inspection reveals very light creasing at the top and bottom corners of the front cover and the top corner of the back cover. Feldstein, Kamen, Kurtzman, and Wood work the interior. The issue is cited in
The Seduction of the Innocent
. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $700.

Weird Science #5 Gaines File pedigree Certificate Missing (EC, 1951) CGC NM/MT 9.8 Off-white pages.
One of the defining covers in E.C.'s legendary history is this atomic bomb blast from the pencils and brush of Al Feldstein. Kamen, Kurtzman, and Wood skillfully keep the pictures coming on the interior. The Gaines Files have given us some sparkling copies of this and other E.C. comic books, but no other specimen of this issue has earned a higher grade from CGC. What, you were hoping for a Mint 10??? There is no Gaines File certificate accompanying this lot. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $700.

Star Spangled Comics #23 Mile High pedigree (DC, 1943) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages.
Simon and Kirby cover and interior art make it special enough but packaged in the Mile High container makes this a prize indeed. The grade here is the highest CGC has given to a representative of issue #23 to date. A slightly mis-cut cover appears to be all that keeps this from an even higher grade. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,150.

Tales From the Crypt #33 Gaines File pedigree 3/12 (EC, 1952) CGC NM+ 9.6 Cream to off-white pages.
When Al Feldstein turned over primary cover artist responsibilities to Jack Davis after issue #28, Davis would create every cover through the end of the run in 1955 doing what is arguably his best comics work. Check out the hot mummy mama on this near-perfect copy. She has her admirer drooling from both mouths! The origin of the Crypt-Keeper is featured in the issue. The grade here is the highest CGC has assigned yet for an issue #33. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $735.

Action Comics #44 (DC, 1942) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Cream to off-white pages.
Fred Ray's cover depicting Superman destroying Nazi soldiers' weaponry is pure period World War II. This copy is near one-of-a-kind, ranking second by a half-grade in CGC's current census for issue #44. Just minor wear along some of the edges keep this below a Near Mint. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,300.

Adventure Comics #67 (DC, 1941) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages.
Jack Burnley's Starman cover qualifies as "classic" with Overstreet on an issue which also features the origin and first appearance of The Mist. Inside, Burnley works on Starman, Bernard Baily does Hourman, and Creig Flessel renders the art on the Shining Knight. This is the nicest copy of issue #67 that CGC has certified to date. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $2,000.

Superman #23 (DC, 1943) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages.
This awesome World War II cover by Jack Burnley depicts an absolutely enraged Superman hell-bent on exacting revenge against a Nazi u-boat for torpedoing a cargo ship. This cover is brilliant in its simplicity and power. This stunning copy has a small scuff mark and ding near the top staple; otherwise, this copy is nigh flawless with deep and rich colors. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,650.
