Young Allies Comics #1 Pennsylvania pedigree (Timely, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages.
The dynamic duo of Simon and Kirby create this amazing cover featuring Bucky knocking the daylights out of the Red Skull and Hitler, and Toro rushing in to save the rest of the team from certain death. The original concept of this cover included Stalin among the baddies, but was removed once Russia joined the Allies in late 1941. This copy has looks super-sharp, maybe even nicer than the grade implies, with a tight spine and perfect registration. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $15,000.

All Story Oct 1912, First Appearance of Tarzan (Munsey, 1912).
Ninety years ago, a cheaply-printed publication appeared unheralded on the newsstand and fired the imaginations of millions. This jaw-dropping, kick you in the gut, and knock you upside the head lot is for just that one pulp containing the very first appearance of Tarzan of the Apes. Star of countless movies, TV shows, and books, he is at once one of the most recognizable and most influential fictional characters ever created. His creator, Edgar Rice Burroughs, had a career in the military followed by a series of failures in a variety of positions before he tried his hand at writing at the age of 35. Convinced that he could do no worse than the pulp fiction writers of his day, he surpassed all expectations with Tarzan, which he went on to feature in 26 novels. Clinton Pettee drew the cover image of Tarzan and the lion locked in deadly embrace, establishing the basic look of Tarzan that has endured ever since. This copy was much loved by its owners (can you blame them?) and it shows. Printed as cheaply as possible in 1912 on low quality paper made from untreated wood pulp, it is a miracle that any copies survive intact. Nearly all of those that do, like this one, have been restored. Our restoration consultant spotted the following work performed on the front cover: three tear seals to the right edge approximately 1/2" to 3/4" in length, two tear seals top edge, a piece has been added in the top left corner, blue color touches along the spine, two color spots on the right edge, green color touch along the spine, tape or glue removal to the left edge. The spine has been supported by rice paper. On the back cover three small fill pieces of rice paper have been added (.3/4"x1/8", 1/4"x18", and 1/4"x1/8") and three edges of the back cover have been supported by rice paper. The most impressive aspect of this copy, unlike many, is that the pages are still flexible enough for our restoration consultant to handle it easily without f

Captain America Comics #12 Chicago pedigree (Timely, 1942) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
Featuring the weird case of the Pygmies of Terror, this book asks the perplexing question: "are Captain America and Bucky doomed to become pygmies for all time?" We certainly hope not! Al Avison handled the cover, another oddity in the run considering it's black logo. Coming from the famous Chicago collection of Timelys, this issue is impeccable. With perfect corners, a flawless spine and rich colors, the book rivals even the Mile High copy in terms of eye-appeal. It's the best one CGC has seen to date, and rightfully so--it's stunning. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $4,000.

All Winners Comics #1 (Timely, 1941) CGC VF- 7.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Only one copy of this early Timely key has been graded higher by CGC. This nice example has bright vibrant colors, a very tight spine, and razor-sharp corners. This is a book that is prone to fading due to the predominance of the color yellow, but you won't find any fading here. The All-Winners Squad makes their first appearance here in a text story by Stan Lee, and the list of contributing artists to this book reads like a Hall of Fame roster: Alex Schomburg, Joe Simon, Jack Kirby, and Bill Everett, all took part in producing this classic issue. Captain America, Bucky, Human Torch, Toro, Sub-Mariner, The Angel, and Black Marvel are beautifully illustrated as they leap into off the cover and into their first of many adventures together. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $12,000.

U.S.A. Comics #1 Rockford pedigree (Timely, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages.
One of Simon and Kirby's most startling Nazi-torture covers is simply riveting, so riveting one might tend to overlook the Who's Who list of artists contributing to this early Golden Age classic. Would you believe more Simon and Kirby, Basil Wolverton, Al Avison, Carmine Infantino, and Syd Shores? Origins of Major Liberty, Rockman, and the Whizzer are here, along with appearances by the Defender, Jack Frost, and the Young Avenger. This stunning copy is the finest CGC has graded yet of the premier issue. All in all, this is one monster mag. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $15,000.

Captain America Comics #30 Chicago pedigree (Timely, 1943) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
Syd Shores delivers a tense cover here, pitting Cap against a gaggle of arabian baddies, as Bucky faces certain death from a deadly snake staring him in the face. Another amazing copy from the Chicago collection, once again displaying a fresh quality normally reserved for Mile Highs. Razor sharp corners and an near-flawless spine account for the book's NM grade, with little to speak of in the way of defects. As of this writing, the copy offered here is the best CGC has ever seen, and considering how hard it is to find NM Golden Age comics, it may very well be the best in existence. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $2,350.

Captain America Comics #4 (Timely, 1941) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
Bucky begs for his life on this Schomburg cover, moments before a deadly serum is injected into him arm. What's funny is that the horrible monster strapped down next to Bucky is actually scarier than the villain! Schomburg would take a break from Cap covers after this issue, returning two years later with his busy art style honed to perfection. This copy is gorgeous, exhibiting sharp edges and a tight spine, bright colors and the slightest rounding of corners. These early Caps are tough in grade, making a VF+ grade exceptional. Captain America's Weird Tales #74 (Timely, 1949) CGC VF- 7.5 Cream to off-white pages.
By the late 1940s, Timely wasn't quite sure what to do with this title. America was between wars, so the super-patriot theme wasn't quite as compelling. With this issue, "Weird Tales" was added to the title to capitalize on the budding genre of horror comics. Overstreet lists this as a classic cover and touts the issue as "scarce." Gerber goes further, rating the book as "rare." An extraordinary issue indeed, as is this copy, the finest that CGC has verified to date. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $3,000.

Captain Thunderer comes charging at its readers on this Schomburg cover, flanked by the book's other features, including Everett's Fin and Captain Daring by Simon and Kirby. This copy looks fantastic, exhibiting a super-tight spine that has no wear, flawless edges, and a clean, white cover. CGC notes that Jack Kirby signed his name on page 22 in marker, another plus for the book. CGC has not found a better copy, so bid fast and hard on this one, as you may never see another as nice. Sub-Mariner Comics #1 (Timely, 1941) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Cream to off-white pages.
This solid copy appears nicer than a VG/FN, but two detached center wraps keep it down in grade. There is no tape on this solid mid-grade copy, and the pages are a nice cream to off-white--nothing brittle at all about this important Timely key. The colors are bright, the staples are secure, and the central cover image is clean and intact. One of the very first comic book superheroes, it is difficult to overstate the importance of the Sub-Mariner in the Marvel Universe. Misanthropic, xenophobic, and usually misunderstood, Prince Namor has been an integral part of Marvel for 63 years. Art by Bill Everett and Paul Gustavson. Overstreet 2002 GD 2.0 value = $2,357; FN 6.0 value = $7,070.

The Young Allies do their best to stay out of trouble, but for some reason always get tangled up in a mess, leaving Torch and Bucky to bail them out. On this Schomburg cover we find a few Allies about to be lowered into a vat of hot oil, saved at the last second--again. Grading NM, there's no defects worth mentioning, leaving us to dote on it's positive attributes, like the super-deep colors, sharp edges and clean cover. And it's the highest graded copy by CGC. Schomburg hands in a classic cover this issue, featuring Subby tipping over a Japanese aircraft carrier, causing it's planes and soldiers to slide right into the ocean. The tiniest bit of skimming at the top and bottom spine, visible on the back cover, are the only defects that can be found on this gorgeous book. A far cry from the battlefields of World War II, but even domestic issues need to be addressed from time to time. Check out the reds on this cover--wow! Weird Science #5 Gaines File pedigree 4/10 (EC, 1951) CGC NM/MT 9.8 Off-white pages.
This fantastic Feldstein atomic explosion cover is a fan favorite, and it's easy to see why. Sales figures showed that EC's science fiction comics always sold better when Feldstein provided the cover art. Looking the same as it did the day it rolled off the printing press, this gem of a comic is unimprovable. It's actually a bit surprising this didn't grade even higher than it did! Amazing Comics #1 (Timely, 1944) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
This smokin' copy may not carry a pedigree, but you sure wouldn't know it by looking. This is the second-highest graded copy certified by CGC, as only one 9.4 has surfaced. A tiny bindery chip at the lower spine and a small 1/8" tear at the top back cover edge are the only flaws on this flat, clean, high-grade copy. The corners are sharp, the spine is stress-free, the colors are bright, the pages are off-white, the edges have a clean cut, and the staple is perfectly set. What more could you ask for in a Timely key? This classic Schomburg cover features nefarious hooded villains, Bucky, Toro, and one of the most infamous racial caricatures of the Golden Age--Whitewash Jones. This beautiful copy really needs to be seen to be appreciated, as the 9.2 number just doesn't seem to do it justice. Mike Sekowsky interior art. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $2,200.

This important issue has Al Williamson's first art at EC. It also has a lot of the EC staff showing up inside: Jack Kamen draws himself, Gaines, and Feldstein, while Johnny Craig and Jack Davis draw themselves into the story. And let's not forget the absolutely horrific cover depicting a hapless peasant about to have his hands amputated. A kind of melancholy comic, this is a typically fantastic EC horror book, but it's also the last hurrah of a beloved series. This comic has all the stunningly high quality features typical of a Gaines copy: clean, bright, sharp, etc., etc. A fairly rare book, the national mood had turned against horror comics to the extent that this issue did not receive wide distribution. Lasting only one issue before changing to
The Human Torch
,
Red Raven Comics
has the first appearance and origin of the Red Raven with cover and artwork by a young Jack Kirby! In fact, this rare book is Kirby's first signed work. A Gerber "7," only 21-50 copies are estimated to exist. Other features inside are Comet Pierce and Mercury by Kirby, the Human Top and the Eternal Brain, as well as the introduction and only appearance of Magar, the Mystic. It's impossible to overstate the importance of this key Timely comic. Tears at the top staple and spine roll are the primary defects; the cover inks are remarkably clean and bright for the grade. Overstreet 2002 GD 2.0 value = $1,038; FN 6.0 value = $3,114.

U.S.A. Comics #4 (Timely, 1942) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Cream to off-white pages.
"Two-fisted Major Liberty fights the Japanese terror in the Axis sub!" Gabriele delivers a great cover here, done in the detailed style which Timely is famous for. A gorgeous copy that carries the "Remember Pearl Harbor" symbol in the logo, and exhibits the slightest bit of edge wear. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $2,600.

The Haunt of Fear #11 Gaines File pedigree 2/12 (EC, 1952) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages.
Overstreet gives the "Classic Ingels cover" thumbs up to this issue, which also features a biography on another famed artist, Jack Kamen. Both contribute art for the comic's interior, as does old reliable, Jack Davis. This mind-blowing copy is only a quarter-grade shy of the highest grade CGC has assigned for this issue. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $390.

The Haunt of Fear #17 Gaines File pedigree 7/12 (EC, 1953) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
Graham Ingels earns another "classic" rating from Overstreet on this, arguably his most gruesome, and his best. It may be the best EC cover of all, and that's high praise indeed. The Gaines File copy gives it to us just as Master Ghastly envisioned, conveying rotting flesh in outrageously incongruent rainbow colors. To see this one is to vow to have your own issue #17. Ghastly! Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $380.

A Jack Davis cover, with inside art credits from Joe Orlando, Jack Kamen, and Graham Ingels make this a memorable issue. Once owned by Bill Gaines himself, this flat, clean and glossy copy won't disappoint. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $460.

Vault of Horror #33 Gaines File pedigree Certificate Missing (EC, 1953) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages.
Johnny Craig created every single cover for this title, and this is one of the spookier ones because of the realism; no ghouls, no ax-wielding maniac, just children solemnly carrying a makeshift coffin. This marvelous copy is unsurpassed in CGC's census for this issue. There is no Gaines File certificate accompanying this lot. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $335.

Captain America Comics #3 (Timely, 1941) CGC FN+ 6.5 Cream to off-white pages.
This third appearance of Captain America is quite a unique book. It's the first Alex Schomburg cover of the run, the first Red Skull cover appearance, Stan Lee's first work for Marvel, and one of only three yellow covers in the entire run. Schomburg is at his best here, presenting the Red Skull up to his old tricks as he prepares Betty and Bucky for a trip into the war zone. This copy is quite attractive, exhibiting nice colors and a clean cover. Two color chips off of the back cover spine are the only defects worth mentioning; no tears, chips or creases are evident. Overstreet 2002 FN 6.0 value = $2,769.

Captain America Comics #36 (Timely, 1944) CGC VF- 7.5 Off-white pages.
Captain America reaches down with a hand of justice and swoops Hitler from his vehicle on this classic action-packed Syd Shores cover. An amazing high-grade copy, this book has only the smallest of imperfections, including two tiny chips (one at the top left and one at the bottom left of the front cover). Nice page quality, a great spine, and deep colors: this book can't get much better. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $1,763.

The Human Torch #3 (#2) (Timely, 1940) CGC VF 8.0 Cream to off-white pages.
This is a very early Timely superhero comic with a great damsel-in-distress cover by Alex Schomburg. Although the inside indicia says it is issue #3, this is actually the second
Human Torch
issue.
The Human Torch
numbering was continued over from the cancelled
Red Raven
series that lasted but a single issue. The comic contains a 40-page Human Torch story, a Sub-Mariner backup story, and, even more unusual, a text story wherein Human Torch and Sub-Mariner battle over which character has the best artist! This is a very solid VF copy with some foxing on the back cover which is more than compensated for by the intense colors of the front cover--which has almost no foxing. Carl Burgos art. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $3,100.

Sub-Mariner Comics #19 "D" pedigree (Timely, 1946) CGC NM- 9.2 Cream to off-white pages.
On this great cover, the Sub-Mariner swims further inland to battle waterfront crimelords, and tips a tugboat over to prove his point to the thugs around him. Deep reds and yellows make the book stand out, with a very thin dust shadow present along the right side. This is the nicest copy graded by CGC to date. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,400.

Crime SuspenStories #6 Gaines File pedigree 3/12 (EC, 1953) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages.
Of all the great artists at EC, Johnny Craig is the one that comes to mind when we discuss this title. Could be because he created all but six of the twenty-three covers in the run, and contributed interior work on all but six issues! This Gaines File copy makes us appreciate not only his classy publishing offerings, but also his foresight to preserve multiple copies for posterity. Had this book been graded higher than even the Near Mint Plus grade CGC has assigned, we would not have been surprised. Definitely the
crème de la crème
. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $385.
