Suspense Comics #3 (Continental Magazines, 1944) CGC FN+ 6.5 Off-white pages.
Few books inspire passion in collectors like
Suspense
#3. Ever since Ernie Gerber featured this cover in his
The Photo-Journal Guide To The Comics
, it has consistently been one of the highest demand books in the hobby. People collect comics for many different reasons: some go for rarity, some go for condition, and some go for classic covers and great artwork. This copy of
Suspense Comics
#3 covers every base. Legendary for its rarity, copies of this comic always draw significant attention when they come to market. As for condition, just finding a complete copy of this elusive gem is a quite a challenge. Of the 20 or so copies known to exist, over half of them are incomplete -- but not this one. All pages are present and accounted for, and this copy is unrestored, and certified by CGC in a Universal blue holder. As for the cover art, our words simply cannot do it justice. One look at the cover of
Suspense
#3 and you will instantly know why this book attracts attention. This copy, with off-white pages, is the nicest one to be offered for sale publicly in quite a while. Don't miss this opportunity to pick up this nice copy, as you may never get another opportunity. CGC notes, "very small piece of tape on centerfold at staple." Cover artwork by Alex Schomburg (but you already knew that). According to the CGC census, this is the second highest graded copy with the highest being just a FN/VF. Overstreet 2002 FN 6.0 value = $4,800.

Target Comics #7 (Novelty Press, 1940) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
Stranded on the silent planet, Space Hawk prepares to pummel the space alien in this classic science fiction cover. A purple moon rises slowly behind the sparse landscape as Space Hawk's muscles tense and strain to crush the bizarre reptilian monster. The eccentric unsung genius of comics, Basil Wolverton, who drew only twelve covers, created this magnificent one and only cover appearance of Space Hawk. The interior includes a Space Hawk story by Wolverton, along with stories by Timely greats Bill Everett and Carl Burgos. If you want a Wolverton cover, and this is widely regarded as his best, then you have only a few comics to choose from. And there are so few copies of this comic in existence that even Overstreet notes that the book is scarce. Do not kid yourself in thinking that you will have another chance to get such a sharp-looking, strictly-graded copy with white pages. This book is insanely difficult to find. According to the CGC census this is the second highest graded copy with only the Mile High grading higher. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $2,925.

Funnies #57 Mile High pedigree (Dell, 1941) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages.
This key book has the origin and first comic book appearance of Captain Midnight. CGC notes "Very minor amount of color touch on cover. Very minor amount of glue on cover" but it's minor enough to still rate a blue label. This comic is so nice it has to be seen in person to be properly appreciated. A rare book in any grade, Gerber estimates that only 50-200 copies still exist. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $3500.

Green Mask #1 Mile High pedigree (Fox Features Syndicate, 1940) CGC NM- 9.2 White pages.
Along with Alex Schomburg and L. B. Cole, Lou Fine was one of the premiere comic artists of the early 1940's, as this cover will attest. Although this title would be short-lived, the hero will be remembered as the most famous of all Green-clad heroes; well, right after Green Lantern, Green Hornet, Green Lama, Green Arrow, and Robin Hood. He was certainly one of Fox's stalwarts, and you will never see him more elegantly displayed than on this superb Mile High copy. Don't even bother looking for a better copy in the universe. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $4,500.

Our Flag Comics #1 Mile High pedigree (Ace, 1941) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
Introducing the Unknown Soldier,
Our Flag
#1 was published by Ace Magazines, producer of such favorites like Four Favorites and Super Mystery, adding another title to the burgeoning field of superhero comics. Exhibiting the characteristic penciled code, this Mile High copy exudes perfection, with edges as sharp as the day they were printed, and a fresh quality that has never been surpassed by any other pedigreed collection. It's the highest graded by CGC, and could very well be the best on the planet. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $2,900.

Four Color Comics #9 (Dell, 1942) CGC VF+ 8.5 Cream to off-white pages.
A true classic among Disney collectors, this issue features the famous story entitled "Donald Duck finds Pirate Gold", by the duck master Carl Barks. Perfection from cover to cover, the book has been reprinted and circulated endlessly, thanks to the steadily increasing fan base that seems to grow every year. This copy is the second nicest graded by CGC, and displays perfectly sharp edges and an impeccable spine. A slight abrasion above the top staple is the only defect that can be seen through the case, which accounts for the book not receiving the NM grade it deserves. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $4,670.

Blue Bolt Weird Tales #115 Spokane pedigree (Star Publications, 1952) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
Mmmmmm.....minty fresh. Nobody made covers that would leap off the stands quite like L. B. Cole, and of all the thousands of covers that he produced during his career, this is one of the most fondly remembered. From the esteemed Spokane collection, this stunning example has been perfectly preserved for the ages. Refrigerated for decades, this copy of
Blue Bolt Weird Tales

Blue Bolt Weird Tales
#115. Surely, a nicer copy cannot exist. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $460.

Exciting Comics #28 (Nedor Publications, 1943) CGC NM 9.4 White pages.
Seasoned collectors know that this book NEVER shows up for sale, and conventional wisdom has always been that you'd have a better chance of hitting the Powerball Lottery than finding a true Near Mint copy of this elusive gem that sports one of the most notorious of Alex Schomburg's Nazi covers. During his decade of putting together
The Photo Journal Guide To The Comics
, Ernie Gerber could not find a copy of
Exciting Comics
#28 in any condition, so this is one of his infamous "white space" books. He rated it an "8" on the Scarcity Index, meaning that he estimated that less than 20 copies exist. There's no pedigree on this copy, but you sure wouldn't know that by looking at it. In fact, this one is better than the Mile High, which CGC graded a 9.2. With incredibly bright cover colors, sharp corners, a near flawless spine, a perfectly set staple, clean cut edges and bone white pages, this book raises the bar for other comics and truly defines Blue Chip material. Don't miss out on this rare opportunity to obtain the very best of the very best. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $750.

Wonder Comics #15 (Better Publications, 1947) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
Of the many fantastic airbrush covers Alex Schomburg produced during his stint at Nedor, a couple stand out as true classics. Included among them is this one, which exhibits a perfect composition by the cover king. The bound beauty, exposed under a giant microscope, is about to be sliced in half when Wonderman busts in, ready to crash the party. The dark colors and background work perfectly, creating an image that is immediately pleasing to the eye. This book was destined to become a classic the instant it was printed. And the fact that this copy grades out at NM makes the book even more appealing. Deep colors and a perfect spine and edges accentuate the cover even more, creating an item that will draw quite a bit of interest during bidding. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $740.

Whirlwind Comics #1 Mile High pedigree (Nita Publication, 1940) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
The Cyclone roars into action on the bright yellow cover, featuring his first appearance, and Nita's first foray into comic publishing. A stunning Mile High example that exudes all of the qualities the collection has come to represent, including corners that do not have a single bit of blunting, a spine that has no blemishes, a back cover with no soil or wear, and colors that leap right off the page. It's the highest graded copy on CGC's census report, and considering it's origin, is probably the best in existence. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,750.

Bulletman #2 Mile High pedigree (Fawcett, 1941) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
Mac Raboy was one of the most talented Golden Age artists, known for his flair in handling human anatomy and for his fine inking line. Raboy worked very slowly and carefully and was known to throw out an entire day's work if he was not satisfied with the results. This cover offers ample demonstration of his talents in the beautifully drawn Bulletman and his sidekick, Bulletgirl, who, thankfully, is all grown up. The Mile High copy is flat and tight, with strong corners and killer pages. It is possible that there will be a higher-grade copy someday, but very doubtful that it will be more appealing than this one. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,650.

Lone Ranger #1 (Dell, 1948) CGC 9.8 NM/MT White pages.
The Lone Ranger's tremendous charisma carried over easily from radio to movies; then, without missing a beat, even gaining momentum, became the undisputed star of 1950s Saturday morning television. Along the way, he rivaled other cowboy kingpins, Roy and Gene, in comic book longevity, with his popularity spilling over and spelling success for his trusted Native American sidekick and his super steed in their own comic books. The premiere issue's cover is a painted masterpiece utilizing the artist's entire palette. If we gush, blame it on this close to perfect copy from which our description emanates. If it got any better than this, we probably couldn't stand it. See this for yourself. Better sit down. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $850.

Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #1 (Dell, 1940) CGC FN+ 6.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Donald Duck beckons you to peruse the very first issue of a title that would run (with an interruption here and there) for 59 years! A continuation of the groundbreaking
Mickey Mouse Magazine
which had begun in 1933, this title was practically mandated by Donald himself, whose feathers were always ruffled at Mickey's implied number one status. Donald would essentially take over the new title and dominate the covers and stories over the 633-issue run. CGC has graded only one other unrestored copy of this historic issue as nicer. Carl Von Buettner contributed with the duck action cover; master Carl Barks did the inside work. Gene Autry Comics #1 (Fawcett, 1941) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white pages.
This is a beautiful copy of Gene and Champion's premiere Fawcett issue, that misses an even higher grading because of some minor scuffing and stresses along the spine. This copy rates "rare" in both Overstreet's and Gerber's books, and this copy, at Very Fine, is unsurpassed by any other that CGC has seen of the issue. The photo back cover has Gene plucking his guitar, singing, we speculate, "Back in the Saddle Again." Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $4,750.

Uncle Sam Quarterly #4 Mile High pedigree (Quality, 1942) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
One of the great patriotic heroes of the Golden Age, Uncle Sam enjoyed a nice run during the early 1940s, enjoying the talents of Lou Fine, Will Eisner and Jack Cole. This issue features our hero facing off against a sword-wielding character, as he literally pulls the rug out from under him. A phenomenal copy hailing from the Mile High collection, we dare you to find any defects on this book. It appears brand new, as if the aging process stopped for the first 35 years of its life. CGC has not found a better copy, and considering its provenance, they probably never will. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $925.

Wham Comics #1 Denver pedigree (Centaur, 1940) CGC NM 9.4 White pages.
Centaur, famous for their many titles produced during the late 1930s, including Detective Picture Stories and Funny Pages, produced this comic at the height of 1940's superhero boom, featuring "64 fast action pages" of the Sparkler, Speed Centaur and Detecto. This copy came from the famous Denver collection of #1 issues, and appears perfect. Outside of a very light dust shadow on the back cover, there are few defects that can be seen through the case. It's the highest graded copy on CGC's census report, and could very well be the best existing in the world. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,750.

than you can shake a stick at. Although this jewel is not listed as being from any pedigree collection, it well could be. Stars and Stripes Comics #4 Mile High pedigree (Centaur, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages.
Origin and first appearance of the team Stars and Stripes. This beautiful book is graced with almost perfectly white pages, a fantastic spine that is held solidly together by two strong staples, and four sharp corners. There is a bindery chip and some dust shadows on the back cover, but otherwise this book comes very close to perfection. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,225.

Silver Streak Comics #18 Mile High pedigree (Lev Gleason, 1942) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
The Saint makes his first appearance this issue, a character that has enjoyed popularity in various mediums right up to present day. Bernie Klein handles the cover, featuring our hero busting up a Nazi party that decided to drop in for a visit. An incredible copy that defies description--but we'll make a feeble attempt anyway. Bright, white, tight, and try as you might, you can't fight the feeling that this book is so right. No better copy could possibly exist, at least not according to the CGC census report. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $750.

Terrific Comics #5 (Continental Magazines, 1944) CGC FN/VF 7.0 Off-white pages.
Right behind Suspense #3 is this doozy of a cover, also rendered by the incomparable Alex Schomburg, and features everything we love about the "cover king." It's packed with gorgeous babes, bondage, torture devices, hooded villains and finally the hero, as he attempts a rescue from the background. Adding to this book's allure is it's scarcity; produced by Continental, who was notorious for cheap printing and poor distribution,
Terrific
#5 is very difficult to find in grade. This one has a clean appearance, with sharp corners and a spine that exhibits few defects. A light crease on the back cover and a small staple tear are the only defects keeping it from the VF range. But the main attraction of this book, it's cover, looks magnificent. Overstreet 2002 FN 6.0 value = $2,040; VF 8.0 value = $4,080.

Bulletman #1 (Fawcett, 1941) CGC VF+ 8.5 Cream to off-white pages.
One of Fawcett's earliest superheroes, Bulletman first appeared in
Nickel Comics
in 1940. The metallic silver ink of the logo and helmets here is striking, and fun to ponder from different angles. Bullet Girl, lovingly rendered by Mac Raboy looks pretty good most of the angles as well. This is a most attractive copy, and the finest
Bulletman
#1 CGC has graded to date. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $2,188.

Stars and Stripes Comics #3 Mile High pedigree (Centaur, 1941) CGC VF+ 8.5 White pages.
Paul Gustavson created another classic and interesting cover for this issue. It looks like the Nazis were dropping bombs practically right on their own men, but what do you expect? The condition of this book is marvelous, of course, since it is the Mile High copy. It is always nice to see CGC note the pages as straight white on an early Golden Age book. This issue features the origin of Dr. Synthe, and there is an appearance by Black Panther. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $781.
