Wow Comics #1 Mile High pedigree (Fawcett, 1940) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
Wow
started off as an anthology full of original characters, including Mr. Scarlet by Simon and Kirby. Due to the fragile paper this cover was printed on, it rarely turns up in high grade. Of course, this Mile High copy is practically perfect! This book is truly something to behold, appearing as new as any magazine on the newsstand today. The CGC label notes a very minor amount of glue on the spine, most likely applied to the corner to secure a bindery tear, but it was tiny enough that CGC still put it in a blue holder. A phenomenal book that might just be the best existing copy on the planet. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $17,000.

WonderWorld Comics #3 (Fox, 1939) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
A true classic from the 1940s, featuring the first appearance of the Flame by Lou Fine. This is the first issue featuring the new title,
WonderWorld
; for its first two issues, the book was called
Wonder Comics
, and was Victor Fox's first foray into the field. The title was changed after Fox faced a lawsuit with DC over his character Wonder Man. The ultra-talented Iger/Eisner shop put together many of Fox's early books, creating some of the finest covers of the Golden Age. This book is near perfect, unheard of in this grade. A blue-chip piece that certainly ranks among the best existing copies, and will always remain a favorite among collectors. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $8,200.

Crypt of Terror #17 Gaines File pedigree (EC, 1950) CGC NM+ 9.6 Cream to off-white pages.
This key book is not only the first issue of this title, it was the very first New Trend book to hit the stands. Formerly
Crime Patrol
, the title and format changed to horror with this issue. After just two more issues, this comic changed titles yet again, and became the hugely famous
Tales from the Crypt
. The condition of this book is truly amazing. The Gaines File Copies are known for their quality, but this one outshines most of the others. Not only is this book totally free from wear, it is free from printing defects as well. The corners are perfectly sharp, and the cover colors are extremely crisp and bright. EC had assembled the greatest team of artists right from the very beginning, and this first issue features an incredible cover by Johnny Craig, and interior art by Al Feldstein and Johnny Craig. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $3,300.

Featuring a cover by Otto Binder and the famous metallic ink logo, this issue most certainly caught the attention of youngsters looking to blow their lunch money on a funny book. Grading out at an incredible NM/MT 9.8, this is certainly the best copy in the world. Two-Fisted Tales #18 Gaines File pedigree 6/7 (EC, 1950) CGC NM 9.8 Off-white pages.
This is the first issue of
Two-Fisted Tales
, the brainchild of Harvey Kurtzman. Unlike most war comics of the time,
Two-Fisted Tales
transcended knee-jerk patriotism and stared right into the eyes of the tough moral questions raised by war. This is an unbelievably beautiful 9.8 copy -- truly a pristine specimen of perhaps the rarest Gaines File Copies (only seven copies saved), except for
Vault of Horror
#12. They simply don't come any better than this. Al Feldstein, Wally Wood, and Johnny Craig contributed to this issue. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,000.

Smash
would eventually showcase the Ray, brilliantly fleshed out by Lou Fine, and Jack Cole's Midnight, a precursor to the legendary Plastic Man. Very minor defects keep this book from grading NM, but you'd never know that by looking at it. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $3,300.

Planet Comics #1 Rockford pedigree (Fiction House, 1940) CGC VF- 7.5 Cream to off-white pages.
The genius talents of Will Eisner and Lou Fine deliver this enthralling and action-packed first issue cover. Note the tremendous detail in the ship's rivets and in the horde of one-eyed, green-skinned, purple-haired beasts. One wonders how our hero, Flint Baker, and heroine could really fit into those huge clear, single-piece space suits. Don't they need to flex their torsos? This first issue features the origin of Auro, Lord of Jupiter, and Flint Baker, and the Red Comet stories begin. Planet Comics is, perhaps, Fiction House's most sought-after title. This long running science-fiction title had a plethora of exciting covers such as this, and was the longest running Golden Age title of this genre. This Rockford pedigree copy has a clean cover, and deep rich hues. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $6,747.

Arguably one of the most famous (or infamous) covers ever to grace an EC mag, this beautiful cover by Wally Wood is presented on an almost-perfect copy of this classic issue. Sharp, bright and clean, there is a slight blunting to the lower right front corner, but that is the only visible flaw on this highly collectible book. Plastic Man #2 Mile High pedigree (Quality, 1944) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
Quality Publications earned its name in spades when Plastic Man was introduced in
Police Comics
. Jack Cole's creation, hailed as "The most fantastic man alive!" was a sane person living in an insane world, perfectly balanced by Cole's surreal touch. With a flawless blend of humor and drama, Plastic Man would become his greatest creation, rising quickly to the top of Quality's talented universe. Heritage is proud to offer an impressive number of
Plastic Man
issues from the Mile High collection starting with #2, a beautiful NM- 9.2 exhibiting a whiteness and luster seldom found on any Golden Age comics. A rare opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind books such as these should not be taken lightly. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $1,850.

Startling Comics #1 (Better Publications, 1940) CGC NM- 9.2 White pages.
As of this writing, this is far and away the best copy of
Startling Comics
#1 seen by CGC. One look at this book and you will know it is special; essentially, a small stain on the right side of the front cover is the only defect keeping this copy from being a straight-up NM. A very faint sun shadow and small bindery chip at the base of the spine on the back cover (a result of the printing process) are the only other flaws to note on this exquisite copy. It features the origin of Captain Future, the first appearance of the Masked Rider, and a drug use story. Two of the industry giants, Will Eisner and Lou Fine, worked on this important early Nedor key. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $2,700.

Our Flag Comics #2 Mile High pedigree (Ace, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 White pages.
An excellent representation of the Golden Age patriotic comic, this issue features the origin of the Flag, merely a few months after Captain America arrived on the scene. Jim Mooney's brightly-colored cover is rife with havoc being wreaked upon the bad-guy Nazi forces. By far the nicest book of this issue that CGC has graded to date, it has a tight spine, sharp corners, and is super-clean. And if that's not enough, it's also a Mile High copy. A small scrape in the lower left corner of the front cover is the only thing keeping this beautiful book out of the NM range. Otherwise, the colors are deep and rich, pages are supple, corners are sharp, and the book has a nice cut. There are no finger dents or thumbprints to indicate that this book has ever been read. The Mongol invasion of New York cover is definitely a WWII-era classic. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $713; NM 9.4 value = $1,250.

Wow Comics #2 Larson pedigree (Fawcett, 1940) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages.
Part of the allure of this collection comes from Lamont Larson's written name on the cover. The codes, check marks, and stamps associated with most other pedigrees are interesting, but there's just something more personal about seeing "Lamont" or "Larson", especially since Jon Berk recently tracked him down, and we now have a face to go with the name. As with many of his books, this copy has foxing, along with slight discoloration around the staples. Early

A near-perfect copy, showing Plas hammin' it up with his pal, Woozy. Cole's ouvre, especially his over-the-top, highly surreal work on this title, has been the subject of both critical and popular appreciation lately, with an article by Art "Maus" Spiegleman in
The New Yorker
and a critically acclaimed biography. One of the greatest and most influential creators in the history of comics, Cole was a true visionary who tragically took his own life in 1958. Fortunately, Plastic Man and his other creations live on for future generations. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $925.

Holy Big Red Cheese! Copies of #21 rarely ever turn up in this condition! The few defects that drop this one down in grade (a few small, minor spot stains) all occur on the back cover. participating in a patriotic tickertape parade in order to show that the American way of life would be preserved. The fighting in 1942 was at its height. Europe was on fire, Americans lined up to lend a hand, and no one can dispute that the comics did their part to stir the American spirit and capture the imaginations of children and adults alike. This copy of

Silver Streak Comics #6 (Lev Gleason, 1940) CGC VG+ 4.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Jack Cole renders a horrific Claw cover, which is undoubtedly the best one of the run. Note the awesome detail of the Claw's victims (especially the girl dangling in the front), the skulls in the Claw's eyes, and the despair and horror-stricken expressions of the victims in the Claw's clutches. Not only does this issue have this phenomenal cover, it also has the origin and first appearance of Daredevil, and is one of the scarcest issues in the run. This copy features a nice cover and light spine wear. Overstreet 2002 GD 2.0 value = $1,179; FN 6.0 value = $3,537.
