Captain America Comics #1 (Timely, 1941) CGC FN/VF 7.0 Extensive (P) Cream to off-white pages.
Captain America is one of the most beloved characters of all, that's why this comic, his origin and first appearance, is one of the most treasured of all. It's currently #6 in Overstreet's ranking of the 100 most valuable comic books. There was certainly plenty of evil afoot in '41, and the fiend behind most of it, one Adolf Hitler, gets a well deserved punch in the face on one of the most famous comic book covers ever. Two other pretty important characters made their debuts in the issue: the evil Red Skull, who would menace Cap for the remainder of the century, and Cap's loyal sidekick Bucky Barnes. Creative geniuses Joe Simon and Jack Kirby drew the origin story, while the cover is a solo effort by Kirby. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, reinforced." Overstreet 2005 GD 2.0 value = $7,179; VG 4.0 value = $14,358; FN 6.0 value = $21,537; VF 8.0 value = $50,000.

Lucky Fights It Through! #nn (EC, 1949) CGC VF- 7.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Here's a rarity that any EC fan will want to pounce on. It's Harvey Kurtzman's first work for EC, a comic called "very rare" by Overstreet and assigned Gerber's "8" rating. Don't let the Western look fool you, this is a promotional comic dealing with preventing venereal disease -- the title character, Lucky, comes down with syphilis! CGC notes, "small amount of dried glue on centerfold and cover." Overstreet 2005 VF 8.0 value = $650. CGC census 4/05: 1 in 7.5, 1 higher.

This early issue of the classic series has a cover featuring the Japanese invasion of Panama Canal. Aside from the Sub-Mariner, the book also features a twenty page story with the Angel. One of the stories in this issue was written by none other than Mickey Spillane. Alex Schomburg illustrated what by today's standards would be considered a somewhat politically incorrect cover. Interior art by Carl Pfeufer and Al Gabriele. Overstreet 2005 FN 6.0 value = $726; VF 8.0 value = $1513. CGC census 4/05: 1 in 6.5, 4 higher.

This issue has a "Pearl Harbor payback" cover theme -- the issue's May 1942 date (meaning it was published several months earlier than that) certainly accounts for that focus.
